1. Content

These types of hashtags describe what is in your image and engage your audience with the image. Try and keep these image on theme to your blog or business and post what your ideal customer is interested in. For example if your ideal audience is yogis and people interested in yoga, post images of yoga mats, yoga poses or yoga clothes. This is what your audience will be looking at so you want to grab their attention. You can even tag your yoga pose! #Yogi #WarriorOne #CobraPose

Pro Tip: Be cautious when using these types of tags. Often they can be over saturated. If you post a photo of your new puppy it might be a better idea to us #GreatDanePuppy instead of just tagging #Puppy.

If you're already using hashtags and still aren't seeing results maybe it's time to have a look at the hashtags you're using and add a few new ones to the mix. You should always keep changing and improving your strategy.

Sticking to the yoga theme - Lululemon uses the hashtag #TheSweatLife. Lululemon asks their followers and customers to share images to show how they live. Other great ones are #JustDoIt from Nike and #ThatsDarling from Darling Magazine.

3. Trending

These are hashtags that are popular and well.. trending. They aren't brand specific but still cater to a specific niche. Spend some time checking out what hashtags people in your niche are using. If your a fashion blogger or own your own clothing company you may use the hashtag #ss16Collection to show off your spring and summer collection.

4. Event Event hashtags can get you major exposure in a short period of time. Again, if you're a fashion blogger and your writing about fashion week use the tag that is giving for fashion week this year #FashionWeek2017 or if you're a fitness blogger and you are writing about a local run #VancouverSunRun. This type of hashtag takes a little research to know what hashtag is being used fo the specific event you are attending or posting about.

This hashtag is a great way to become a part of a community but can end quickly if the event is only one day. Which makes it great for exposure for that day but isn't a good idea to use that hashtag months down the road.

MAXIMIZE EXPOSURE Use all of your allowed hashtags to maximize exposure. If you're only putting 3-5 hashtags in your post then you're limiting yourself to three to five search results. If you're adding 30 hashtags which Instagram allows then your reaching out to that many more viewers.

It's a good idea to try out hashtags and check out other posts that are using the same hashtag. It's a great way to decide on more hashtags to add to your own posts if you are stumped and can't think of all 30 on your own.

Write out 10-15 hashtags that support your brand, remember you're not describing what's in your image you're trying to reach others who are interested in your brand. Refer to page for examples.

BE CREATIVE Try and be creative with your hashtags. Just like was mentioned before, try to avoid hashtaging your images with tags like #cute or #cat but instead add a bit of substance to your post with hashtags like #thatsdarling or #orangetabby.

Millions of people are hashtagging all day so try to stand out by being creative. Have some fun with it!

INCREASE CHANCES Choose hashtags that aren't extremely popular. If a hashtag has over 400 thousand hits the probability of your hashtag standing out and being seen is slim. Try to stick to a smaller number of hits to increase your chances of exposure. A goo number to stick to is between 100 - 300 thousand posts. Anything more than that and your post could get lost and diluted, and anything under that risks reaching a smaller audience.

PROMOTE Promote your hashtags by using them all across your social media platforms as well as your blog and website. Use your hashtag in your Facebook groups, your Facebook posts, on your Pinterest images, on Twitter or even on your business cards.

As it was mentioned earlier having a ton of hashtags in your caption doesn't look very good and can take away from the post. So put your hashtags in a comment after your description. It cleans up your feed and If you share your Instagram images on other social media Platforms it doesn't look so messy. It's awesome to add a ton of well thought out and researched hashtags. But seeing a pile of them in a caption is distracting, looks kinda desperate and takes away from your post.

Once you’ve worked out a good hashtag campaign (group of 20-30 niche related hashtags) copy and paste them into a notepad on your phone or computer. Then once you've posted an image go into your notes and copy your campaign and paste it into a comment.

Once a couple people comment on your image your hashtags will be hidden and your account will look clean and professional.
