    TYPES OF SEXUAL ASSAULT What is Rape? Rape is non-consensual sexual contact. The law makes many distinctions among the types of sexual contact and the level of force used to obligate a victim to have sexual contact. There are many types of sexual abuse and assault. Acquaintance Rape (Links to place on the page below) Marital or Spousal Rape Stranger Rape Multiple Assailant / “Gang” Rape Drug-Facilitate Rape Child Sexual Abuse and Assault Incest Often, survivors of any type of sexual assault experience similar reactions to the trauma. This collection of reactions is called Rape Trauma Syndrome. Acquaintance Rape Acquaintance rape is a sexual assault crime committed by someone who knows the victim. Here are some facts about acquaintance rape: · It can happen any time and any place · The rapist may be a date, neighbor, boss, colleague, delivery person, repair worker, spouse or anyone else you know. Rapists are not usually strangers. Studies show: Over 80% of rape survivors were assaulted by someone they knew. 47% were raped by dates. · One in four college women were victims of rape or attempted rape while they were students. Eight-four percent of them knew the rapist. Fifty-seven percent of the rapes happened during a date. (Dr. Mary Koss, researcher at Kent State University) · Acquaintance rape is rarely reported to police. Less than 2% of acquaintance rape victims reported the assault; 21% of women raped by strangers report the crime to police. · Twelve percent of college men reported that they had physically restrained a woman to gain sexual advantage. REMEMBER: Date rape can occur despite all precautions.

Acquaintance rape is when somebody you know—a boyfriend or girlfriend, a friend, a classmate, or even someone you just met—uses coercion (including drugs or alcohol), violence, or threats to force unwanted oral, vaginal, or anal sex. It occurs any time a person is forced, coerced, and/or manipulated into any unwanted sexual activity.     THE INFLUENCE OF BENEVOLENT SEXISM ON RAPE LAWS The Influence of Benevolent Sexism on Rape Laws Madison Hollinshead University of Illinois at Springfield THE INFLUENCE OF BENEVOLENT SEXISM ON RAPE LAWS My paper, “The Influence of Benevolent Sexism on Rape Laws,” has a heavy focus on diversity. My main argument is that non-traditional women are disadvantaged when it comes to legislation regarding rape. This argument is based on social congruity theory, which states that a person will be perceived more positively if they conform to the norms of their identified group, and the idea of benevolent sexism, in which women are viewed in both a positive and stereotypical light. Through an exploration of current and past rape laws, I make the case that the current legislation regarding rape is undermined by the toxicity of benevolent sexism. Because of this, women that disengage from their traditional roles are disadvantaged by the criminal justice system. Ultimately, my goal was to highlight the ways in which the criminal justice system denounces diversity in women’s culture. THE INFLUENCE OF BENEVOLENT SEXISM ON RAPE LAWS Abstract Rape laws in the United States do little to protect or pay retribution to victims, or to discourage offenders, as can be seen through statistics showing the conviction rate in 1996 to be a little over 1% (Landsman, 2015). The aim of this paper is to attempt to provide some reasoning for why these laws fail to protect victims in 98% of cases. One reason may be the benevolent sexism that underpins most of western society, including American jurisprudence.

INTRODUCTION Traditionally, the law has done more than reflect the restrictive and sexist views of our society; it has legitimized and contributed to them. In the same way, a law that rejected those views and respected female autonomy might do more than reflect the changes in our society; it might even push them forward a bit.1 In today’s society, sexism is by no means an extinct concept, made obsolete through the various gender revolutions of the 1960s and ’70s. Rather, sexism continues to afflict women in numerous societal domains. Some of these areas have received ample attention and have been accepted by the general public as legitimate areas of social concern—sexism in the workplace, sexism in the military, and sexism in the home, for example. Other areas over which sexism continues to reign, however, have not received as much popular attention and, consequently, continue to reside in unfamiliar territory. Sexism in rape law, as well as sexism in societal attitudes toward rape, is one such arena.2 “Acquaintance rape” is a broad term that describes any rape perpetrated by someone who knows his victim.3 Countless forms of acquaintance rape exist, including rape by a lover, husband, friend, co-worker, neighbor, or relative.4 The common denominator in this non-exhaustive list is that each case involves a woman who is forced to have sex, not by a criminal hiding behind the bushes in the park, but rather by the guy next door—an attacker in date’s clothing, a perpetrator not easily identifiable as criminal by outward appearances.
