  • Bauhaus 1 Bauhaus
Bauhaus 1 Bauhaus Staatliches Bauhaus, commonly known simply as Bauhaus, was a school in Germany that combined crafts and the fine arts, and was famous for the approach to design that it publicized and taught. It operated from 1919 to 1933. At that time the German term Bauhaus, literally "house of construction" stood for "School of Building". The Bauhaus school was founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar. In spite of its name, and the fact that its founder was an architect, the Bauhaus did not have an architecture department during the first years of its existence. Nonetheless it was founded with the idea of creating a The Bauhaus Dessau 'total' work of art in which all arts, including architecture would eventually be brought together. The Bauhaus style became one of the most influential currents in Modernist architecture and modern design.[1] The Bauhaus had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, and typography. The school existed in three German cities (Weimar from 1919 to 1925, Dessau from 1925 to 1932 and Berlin from 1932 to 1933), under three different architect-directors: Walter Gropius from 1919 to 1928, 1921/2, Walter Gropius's Expressionist Hannes Meyer from 1928 to 1930 and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Monument to the March Dead from 1930 until 1933, when the school was closed by its own leadership under pressure from the Nazi regime. The changes of venue and leadership resulted in a constant shifting of focus, technique, instructors, and politics. For instance: the pottery shop was discontinued when the school moved from Weimar to Dessau, even though it had been an important revenue source; when Mies van der Rohe took over the school in 1930, he transformed it into a private school, and would not allow any supporters of Hannes Meyer to attend it.

First, after introducing the southwestern German city of Freiburg im Breisgau, I will examine some of the reconstruction activities that occurred there within the six-year period following the end of World War II. Specifically, I will discuss the work of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC, a faith- based Quaker service organization) and of the French military government in occupied Freiburg, with special attention to efforts that promoted cultural reconciliation. Second, using Freiburg as a case study of the larger-scale post-war changes that were occurring across Europe, I will explain how the exchange of ideologies, languages, and cultural practices within this period helped to lay the foundations for the modern, peaceful, and unified Europe we know today.

At 57 kilometres in length, it is a world-record-breaking tunnel. 28,200,000 tonnes of rock were excavated during the construction process – particles of which you can find on the special stamps with a gutter. At the end of August, our champion Swiss wres- Alptransit AG tlers will be offering up fierce battles in the saw- dust, fighting for the coveted laurel wreath in Estavayer-le-Lac. A special sheet of stamps with a vignette in the centre pays tribute to the tradi- tional Swiss sport. Drescheribe, Captain of the Artillery and Engineer, in 1726. The fortifications at Kehl were originally constructed by Vauban in 1688. Its strategic importance was such that it changed hands a number of times over the next 100 years, ceded to by France to Baden in 1697 and then taken by the French in 1703, 1733, 1793 and 1796, and later by the Austrians. The village and fortress of Kehl was located near the Margraviate of Baden (now part of the German state of Baden-Württemberg, but then part of the Holy Roman Empire), just across the Rhine River from the French city of Strasbourg. The fortress at Kehl, and that at Philippsburg to the north, provided strategic military control over major crossings of the upper Rhine, which formed the boundary between French- controlled Alsace and the various principalities of the empire. The responsibility to maintain and defend the fortress belonged to the Swabian Circle, which was largely dominated by the Duchy of Württemberg. The maker of the map is likely Gottfried or Geoffrey Drescheribe, who was also an Architect in the employ of the Duke of Wurtemberg. Detailed Condition: Pen & Ink with wash colors.

  • The Rise of Fiscal Capacity
The Rise of Fiscal Capacity Davide Cantoni Cathrin Mohr Matthias Weigand* June 2021 Abstract We study the role of a crucial institutional innovation — the development of fiscal capacity through modern, permanent administrations — in fostering state consolidation in Europe in the Early Modern era. Using a novel dataset, we examine the introduction of fiscal centraliza- tion in territories of the Holy Roman Empire from 1400 to 1789. After implementing the reform, territories were more likely to survive, increased in size, and were able to achieve a more com- pact territorial extension. We show that increased revenues, a reduction of short-term lending, more investments in military infrastructure, improved defensive capability, and a higher abil- ity to marry off daughters to powerful princes, were key mechanisms through which rulers were able to consolidate their territories. The absence of pre-trends, as well as the robustness of our results with regard to selection and endogeneity concerns, suggest that fiscal centralization played a causal role in this context. We argue that the external threat posed by the Ottoman Empire was a key driver of the adoption of fiscal centralization, independently of the rise and decline of deliberative bodies (Estates). Keywords: Fiscal capacity, state competition, war, Germany JEL Classification: H20, N33, N43, P16 *Cantoni: Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat¨ Munich, CEPR, and CESifo. Email: [email protected]. Mohr: Univer- sitat¨ Bonn. Email: [email protected]. Weigand: Harvard University. Email: [email protected]. Helpful and much appreciated suggestions, critiques and encouragement were provided by Joachim Voth and Jesse Shapiro as well as seminar and conference participants in Berkeley, Frankfurt (Max Planck Institute), Harvard, Milan (Universita` Cattolica), Oxford, and Tel Aviv.
