ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: SLAVE LEGACIES, AMBIVALENT MODERNITY: STREET COMMERCE AND THE TRANSITION TO FREE LABOR IN RIO DE JANEIRO, 1850-1925 Patricia Acerbi, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Dissertation directed by: Professor Barbara Weinstein Department of History This project is a history of street vending during the transition from enslaved to free labor in the capital of the most enduring slave society of the Americas. Street vending – long the province of African slaves and free blacks – became in these years a site of expanded (European) immigrant participation and shifting state disciplinary policies. My dissertation contends that during the gradual transition to free labor, urban policing and the judicial system in the city of Rio came to target “criminality” rather than illicit or improper vending practices. Disciplinary measures established by criminal law focused on correcting individuals who were peddlers and not inadequately regulated street commercial activity. Thus, the language of citizenship appeared in court cases to both establish and resist negative characterizations of street vendors while a gradual marginalization of street commerce occurred within the framework of citizenship building. The practice of street commerce during this transitional era reveals a historical process that produced and transformed notions of legitimate work and public order as well as the racial segmentation of the labor force. Street vending, I argue, became a strategy of subsistence among the post-abolition urban poor, who came to their own understandings of freedom, free labor, and citizenship. Elite and popular attitudes toward street vending reflected the post- abolition political economy of exclusion and inclusion, which peddlers did not experience as mutually exclusive but rather as a dialectic of an ambivalent modernity. -

352 Book Reviews Public Memory of Slavery: Victims and Perpetrators in the South Atlantic. Ana Lucia Araujo. Amherst NY: Cambria Press, 2010. xxii + 478 pp. (Cloth US$ 134.99) After decades of research and debates on the history of slavery and the slave trade and on the cultural links between Africa and the Americas, and fruitful theoretical developments on memory, remembrance, the invention of traditions, and public history, the time was ripe for a discussion on the public memory of slavery. Ana Lucia Araujo, Associate Professor of History at Howard University, chose Brazil and Benin to demonstrate the potential of the topic. The theme is developed in broad terms and in long descriptive sections. The first chapter is dedicated to an overview of the Atlantic slave trade and slavery in the Americas. However, the ambition to cover such complex and frequently renovated fields resulted in simplification and failure to connect to the theme of the book. The second chapter deals with the emer- gence of memory of the slave trade and slavery by surveying the intellectual and social movements against racism and the initiatives to memorialize the past in the twentieth century. Some commonplace statements are mixed in with interesting insights. The discussion of the use of Gorée island as a “lieu de mémoire” explores quite well the contradiction between its rela- tive insignificance during the slave trade and the attention it receives now. One complex question is missed: why did communist regimes in Africa choose to ignore race and slavery in their otherwise elaborate public mem- ory construction? At this point, readers will realize that the questions driv- ing the book emerge largely from the Anglophone debate on race and fail to take into account local—Beninese, Brazilian—perspectives that would render the discussion more complex and authentic. -

"Citizens In The Making": Black Philadelphians, The Republican Party And Urban Reform, 1885-1913 Abstract “Citizens in the Making” broadens the scope of historical treatments of black politics at the end of the nineteenth century by shifting the focus of electoral battles away from the South, where states wrote disfranchisement into their constitutions. Philadelphia offers a municipal-level perspective on the relationship between African Americans, the Republican Party, and political and social reformers, but the implications of this study reach beyond one city to shed light on a nationwide effort to degrade and diminish black citizenship. I argue that black citizenship was constructed as alien and foreign in the urban North in the last decades of the nineteenth century and that this process operated in tension with and undermined the efforts of black Philadelphians to gain traction on their exercise of the franchise. For black Philadelphians at the end of the nineteenth century, the franchise did not seem doomed or secure anywhere in the nation. -

Melissa Range Lawrence University [email protected] Archival expert assignment sheet This term, you will be in charge of leading one class as the “archival expert.” Your assignment is simple: I want you to read nineteenth century newspapers published by African American editors. Using two of the library’s electronic databases—African American Newspapers and/or Accessible Archives—you will make use of digital archives to provide historical context for the day’s reading. Here’s what to do for prep work, step by step: • On the date you’re signed up to be the archival expert, look at when the writer published their works. (So, for example: Frances Ellen Watkins Harper published Poems on Miscellaneous Subjects in 1855.) • Determine a location that is relevant to the writer, if possible. For Harper, this could be Baltimore (where she grew up), Philadelphia (where she lived and worked as an adult), or Boston (where she frequently lectured). • Now choose a newspaper that is relevant to the date and the location of the poet. If you want to get even more specific, you can (for example, you could look at an abolitionist newspaper for Harper). If you can find one, you can also choose a newspaper where the writer published. • Select an issue of the newspaper and read the whole thing: news, editorials, poetry, even the advertisements. (Be forewarned, the print is tiny and there’s a lot of text.) As you read, make note of anything at all—newspaper poems, news items, even weather—that you feel gives interesting context to the work the class will be discussing. -

Tremel n 1848 the slave-turned-abolitionist Frederick Douglass wrote in Ithe National Anti-Slavery Standard newspaper that Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, “more than any other [city] in our land, holds the destiny of our people.”1 Yet Douglass was also one of the biggest critics of the city’s treatment of its black citizens. He penned a censure in 1862: “There is not perhaps anywhere to be found a city in which prejudice against color is more rampant than Philadelphia.”2 There were a number of other critics. On March 4, 1863, the Christian Recorder, the official organ of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, commented after race riots in Detroit, “Even here, in the city of Philadelphia, in many places it is almost impossible for a respectable colored per- son to walk the streets without being assaulted.”3 To be sure, Philadelphia’s early residents showed some mod- erate sympathy with black citizens, especially through the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, but as the nineteenth century progressed, Philadelphia witnessed increased racial tension and a number of riots.
