THERE’S a groundswell of opposition to the drilling of exploration oil wells off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) with the South Environmental Alliance (SDCEA), led by Desmond D’Sa challenging the authorisation granted by the Deparment of Mineral Resources (DMR) to foreign mining giants Eni and SASOL, permitting them to drill six exploration wells at two deep sea locations off KZN's coast. Speaking on their appeal, D’Sa said there was no consideration taken into account of how this exploration will affect the lives of millions of people who use the ocean. “KwaZulu-Natal has over 12 000 fi shers who depend on the ocean for a livelihood, a booming tourism and recreational industry whose source of income depends on the ocean. Our ocean has rich marine biodiversity many of which are endangered and run the risk of extinction. The public participation was inadequate and not meaningful as it failed to inform various communities along the entire coastline of KwaZulu-Natal,” he said. According to D’Sa, the public participation meetings only took place in Durban, Richards Bay and Port Shepstone, areas, he said, which did not represent the entire coastline. “It is evident that oil rigs have dire consequences on the environment and marine life. In the case of the Deepwater Horizon accident in 2010, more than 200 million gallons of crude oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico killing 11 workers and destroying an abundance of marine life. “The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance together with many coastal communities of KwaZulu-Natal will be appealing this decision. The ocean belongs to the people of , and we should have a say in what happens to it. Private developers invited to partner with city

PRIVATE developers with their own land will be invited to partner with the City for the development of gap and affordable housing. This follows the tabling of a report at an Executive Committee meeting held this week. The report suggests that private developers enter into partnership agreements to help to provide gap and affordable housing developments to assist in creating sustainable human settlements and improved quality of household life. According to the report, to date eThekwini Municipality has delivered 194 794 RDP homes, 2 787 Community Residential Units with 23 000 rental units transferred to tenants. However, despite these efforts the housing backlog persists. Gap housing is a Human Settlements Programme which is enabled through the Finance Linked Individual Subsidy Programme (FLISP) which targets the Trevor White looks out over the ponds at Umbilo Park. THE Nomads Golf Club in South Africa hosts an Andrew Mentis Golf Day, which is the culmination of the year’s fundraising campaign to benefi t needy organisations. This year the Andrew Mentis Golf Day will be held on 1 November at the Royal Durban Golf Club. The Nomads Golf Club was formed over 50 years ago with a view of enjoying golf and camaraderie, but also for the furtherance of golf in South Africa. Nomads also sponsor SA junior golf. Many golfi ng stars such as Gary Player, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Louis Oosthuisen and Brendan Grace, have been and are still involved in the club’s various programmes. Nomads also sponsor the SA Paraplegic Golfers Association and promote up-and- coming previously disadvantaged young golfers. The club actively participates in the Golfarama program, where the scoring for the PGA Tour throughout South Africa and the Sun City Nedbank tour is captured. The members give of their time for free but earn payments for the Nomads club of South Africa. Each year, a benefi ciary is selected to gain from the year’s fundraising campaign, and the benefi ciary of the 2018 golf day was Vukukhanye Educare Centre, a non-profi t organisation formed in 2001, concerned with the care and support of orphans and vulnerable children, based in Chesterville. More than R75 000 was raised and went towards the construction Smith is runner-up in Portugal of a new undercover area at the pre-school.
