DEFINITION The NCPHRF Committee is a Standing Committee of the Yacht Racing Association of San Francisco Bay. Its sole function is to determine the speed potential of yachts that meet the criteria of Section II below. It will assign rating values to yachts for which a rating application is filed. Such values will be in seconds per mile and assume a mixture of Around the Buoy and Windward Leeward racing on San Francisco Bay and the surrounding area. The NCPHRF Committee recognizes that the handicaps will be used in a variety of races ranging from protected bays, estuaries and lakes to open oceans. Therefore, the Committee has no responsibility for the seaworthiness or safety of yachts rated, but cites the US SAILING Fundamental Rule 4 part 1: "It shall be the sole responsibility of each yacht to decide whether or not to start or to continue to race." A variety of conditions are encountered ranging from typical late spring and summer afternoon conditions with a 15 to 25 knot wind range to the milder winds often encountered in the fall, winter and early spring ranging from 5 to 15 knots. Windward/Leeward courses and racing in the seasons of lighter winds have become more popular. -

Information About the LYS-System
LYS – Nordic Handicapping System - 2003 Information about the LYS-system The purpose of the LYS system is to give yachts of different classes the option to race against each other. The LYS number indicates what the “best” yacht of each respective kind is able to perform to. It is based on race statistics, which is a comparison between different types of yachts and experience. The table is split in four groups, keelboats, sport boats, dinghies and multihull yachts. The corrected times are normally calculated by simply multiplying the elapsed times by their respective LYS-figures. The LYS-values are applied similarly in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. Here’s why a unique Norse take on naval architecture made the Viking longboats a legend that still flourishes today. By David W. Shaw ART BY MARTIN DRIVER 6 SCANDINAVIAN REVIEW AUTUMN 2016 AUTUMN 2016 SCANDINAVIAN REVIEW 7 N THE FALL OF 1879, TWO TEEN- age boys on the Gokstad farm in Sandefjord,I Norway, decided to do some digging in an old Viking burial mound on the property. The mound was well known to locals. In fact, they named it the “king’s mound” because it was so massive—about 16 feet high with a diameter of nearly 150 feet. As the kids dug in the peat and clay, they unearthed what appeared to be the remains of a ship. Of course they couldn’t be sure, but they went home saying they’d found something mighty interesting in the king’s mound. Word spread, finally reaching an influential antiquarian expert at the University of Oslo. After investigating the site, he determined that the mound was home to a Viking ship. Excavation began in 1880. The ship was meticulously restored and new timbers were added when the original parts were beyond repair. The vessel, known as the Gokstad ship, is on display at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. It’s a magnificent sight that inspires imaginings of the Viking Age. It also provides fascinating evidence that helps clarify why these open boats were capable of crossing the North Atlantic on epic journeys of exploration at a time when Europe languished in the tumultuous Dark Ages. -

DEFINITION The Northern California Performance Handicap Racing Fleet Committee (NCPHRF Committee) is a Standing Committee of the Yacht Racing Association (YRA) of San Francisco Bay. Its sole function is to determine the performance potential of yachts in racing applications and provide a handicap value in an attempt to equalize the chances of winning across a broad spectrum of competitors. This handicap value (rating) will be provided to a yacht that applies for a rating and meets the criteria listed in Section II. II. CRITERIA Vessels applying for a rating shall meet the following minimum criteria: 1. The vessel shall have a single hull (Monohull type). 2. The vessel shall have a minimum, fixed, external ballast weight of 400 pounds. a. An exception to this rule is granted to vessels with ratings assigned prior to 1998. 3. The vessel shall have a minimum canoe body length of 19 feet. The committee may decline to provide a rating for any vessel it considers unable to fairly evaluate. For new and unfamiliar vessels, a provisional rating may be provided by the committee, and subject to re-evaluation at the committee’s discretion after a period of observation. III. APPLICATION Ratings will be provided as described above to yachts that apply for a rating. -

We have assembled an extraordinary team that has IKC Chairman worked hard to make this IKC one of the best ever. We want to give special thanks to Commodore Kimball Livingston, JJ West (Club General Manager) and Lynn Lynch (Director of Race) for providing our regatta with the level of hospitality for which the IKC is renowned. The International Knarr Championship is one of the premier amateur sailing events in the world. Its unique format with daily rotation of boats is the supreme test of skipper and crew. With ten races in the series, consistent performance matters more than luck, missed tide line or a fortuitous wind shift. -

Tartan Ten, Sailboat Survey, 1979 The Tartan Ten is advertised and sold as a one-design racer suitable for overnight offshore racing and cruising in protected and.coastal waters. This is not a boat for racing from Newport to Bermuda because the large cockpit volume does not satisfy the requirements for Category I racing as established by the United States Yacht Racing Union. On page one of the owner's manual Tartan Marine Company cautions that the T-10 is a special purpose boat "suited to day sailing and closed course racing with limited offshore intent." The enormous cockpit (each bench seat is 9'8" long) and flush deck permit uncramped and comfortable racing and a floating picnic ground for the day-sailor The boat can be raced with a crew of three and sailed securely by a practiced couple. Women who race, as well as those whose interest is in cruising, rated this boat as very easy to sail due to the layout of the sail controls and the extreme ease of steering. The T-10 draft is 5'10 1/2'. Fleets are now being formed throughout the United States for one-design racing with the largest fleets currently on the Great Lakes. WHAT WE LIKED: We think the boat is well designed and very handsome. Our inspection of the production facilities in Grand River, Ohio, satisfies us that wet out and lay up of the balsa cored hull and deck are carefully done under supervision. If anything, the hull-deck joint is a case of overkill (see drawing).
