At a time of highly political and polarised debate, the need for accurate, trustworthy and robust journalism is as important as it has ever been. In March, we launched an in-depth review of BBC news and current affairs, putting audiences at the heart of our research. Over the spring and summer, we gathered views from people across the country. We commissioned research to give us a detailed insight into how people get their news, and we looked at the range and depth the BBC offers compared to other news providers. We also spoke to around 50 media organisations, industry bodies and academics across the UK. Here is a summary of our main findings, along with our recommendations to the BBC. We have also published on our website the range of evidence that has informed this. Accuracy is central to the BBC’s reputation The BBC remains the UK’s primary source for news. Despite an uncertain political environment, it has maintained its reputation among most people for trusted and accurate reporting.

Since our launch in 1981, there has been proliferation of platforms, channels and catch-up services. In recent years, more people have started to watch television and video content distributed through the internet. Project Dovetail is at the heart of our development strategy. Its premise is that BARB’s services need to harness the strengths of two complementary data sources. - BARB’s panel of 5,100 homes provides representative viewing information that delivers programme reach, demographic viewing profiles and measurement of viewers per screen. - Device-based data from web servers provides granular evidence of how online TV is being watched. The TV Player Report is the first stage of Project Dovetail.

Bu araştırma, ‘haber kanalı’ olgusunun ne olması gerektiği ve var olanların bu oluşuma uyup uymadıklarının kaygısından yola çıkmıştır. “Haber kanalı olgusu ve yayın politikası ilişkisi” adlı bu çalışmayla, haber kanalları yöneticilerinin yayın politikaları doğrultusunda ‘haber kavramı’ içerisinde izleyiciye ne sunduğu, yayın akışları içerisinde hangi tür programlara yer verdikleri ve habere ne kadar yer ayırdıkları sorgulanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda Türkiye’de yayın yapan NTV, CNN TÜRK, SKYTURK, HABER TURK, TRT2, TGRT HABER, HABER 7 (Ülke Tv) yöneticileri ve önde gelen uluslar arası haber kanalları BBC WORLD NEWS ve CNN INTERNATIONAL yöneticileriyle ile yüz yüze veya yazılı iletişim teknikleri kullanılarak derinlemesine mülakat yapılmıştır. Medya yöneticilerinin haber anlayışları çerçevesinde haber kanallarının yayın politikaları ortaya çıkarılmaya çalışılmıştır. Niteliksel görüşme ve niceliksel yayın akışı içerik çözümlemesi yöntemlerinin uygulandığı bu çalışmada, çalışma evreni içerisindeki haber kanallarının yayın akışları karşılaştırılarak haber kanallarında izleyiciye tüm gün boyunca hangi tür programların iletildiği tespit edilmiştir.
