What Painting Is “A Truly Original Book
More praise for What Painting Is “A truly original book. It will make you look at paintings differently and think about paint differently.”—Boston Globe “ This is a novel way of considering paintings, and excitingly different from standard art criticism.”—Atlantic Monthly “The best books often introduce new worlds. What Painting Is exposes the reader to painting materials, brushstroke techniques, and alchemy of all things, in a book filled with rich descriptions and illuminating insight. Read this and you’ll never look at paintings in the same way again.”— Columbus Dispatch “ James Elkins, his academic laces untied, traces a mysterious, evocation and an utterly convincing parallel between two spirits grounded in the earth—alchemy and painting. The author is an alchemist of ideas, and a painter. His openness to the love of quicksilver and sulfur, to putrefying animal excretions, and his expertise in imprimaturas, his feeling for the mysteries of the brushstroke —all of these allow him to concoct a heady elixir.” —Roald Hoffmann, Winner of the Noble Prize in Chemistry, 1981 What Painting Is How to Think about Oil Painting, Using the Language of Alchemy James Elkins Routledge New York • London Published in 2000 by Routledge 29 West 35th Street New York, NY 10001 This edition published in the Taylor & Francis e-Library, 2005. “To purchase your own copy of this or any of Taylor & Francis or Routledge’s collection of thousands of eBooks please go to www.eBookstore.tandf.co.uk.” Published in Great Britain by Routledge 11 New Fetter Lane London EC4P 4EE Copyright © 1999 by Routledge All rights reserved. -

Its central focus is the specific use of occultism as a site of political and social resistance, ideological contestation, subversion and revolution. Additional focus is placed on the ways occultism was implicated in surrealist dis- courses on identity, gender, sexuality, utopianism and radicalism. Dr. Tessel M. Much modern criticism regards Blake's work as non-transcendental, even secular. This is partly a reaction against earlier criticism, which was more sympathetic to Blake's connection with the mystical tradition. The argument of this thesis, however, is that Boehme exerted a continuous and pervasive influence on Blake, and that recognition of this can illumine some of the most difficult and contradictory elements in Blake's work. -

This work which clarifies the true history of the Templars and the Rosicrucians from 1317 to the present day took shape following the teachings of Roger Caro and Pierre Phoebus. Our illustrious predecessors have done considerable work in analyzing and cataloguing an innumerable quantity of ancient parchments and manuscripts. The work reveals some philosophical and alchemical knowledge of the Order of the East, inside the Order of the Temple, unearthed today in the “Grande Maison Metropolitaine d’Initiation” in the good lands of the Principality of Monaco, above all thanks to the help of the Emperor who I would like to personally thank for his precious teachings and his sense of brotherhood and friendship. The time is ripe to really know the HISTORICAL facts of this great knowledge learned from the TEMPLARS during their stay in IRAN with the ISMAELIT or NAZIREI, tribe that gave the native to Jesus. The purpose of this work is only to bring clarity and justice to the unjust persecutions suffered by our illustrious predecessors and to convey their spiritual values in a more understandable way, WITHOUT WANTING TO INFLUENCE the beliefs and religious faith of the readers that must be maintained and practiced. -
Håkan Blomqvist Esotericism and UFO Research a Selection and Compilation of Blog Entries 2013 – 2017

Miscellanea 392 Some Comments From Blog Readers 460 3 Introduction In 2013 my book Gudarna återvänder. Ufo och den esoteriska traditionen (Return of the Gods. UFOs and the Esoteric Tradition) was published. To my knowledge this was the first extensive study of how ideas and assertions in the Esoteric Tradition has influenced the UFO movement, both from a scholarly and esoteric perspective. But it was also an attempt to formulate a variant of the esoteric intervention theory, presented by Jacques Vallee in several books and articles. As the book was only published in Swedish several of my many friends and UFO research colleagues around the world urged me to make an English translation. About a year ago I did begin translating the manuscript but soon discovered that so much additional interesting data had come my way since 2013 that I abandoned the idea. Instead I decided to publish a compilation of some of the relevant blog entries about UFOs and Esotericism written 2013- 2017. This compilation is only a selection and more data can be found on my blog: http://ufoarchives.blogspot.se/ As I have not changed anything in the blog entries there will naturally be much repetition in the compilation. But I hope this study will be of interest and compensate readers who had hoped for a translation om my book. -
A Parisian Interview with the Expert on Virtutes Occultae Nicolas Weill-Parot
Rozhovor 77 Between the Astral Plane and Scholasticism: A Parisian Interview with the expert on virtutes occultae Nicolas Weill-Parot Interview: Paris, Bouillon Racine, 12. 5. 20161 Zdenko Vozár, FA MU, Department for the Study of Religions / FA CU, Department of Czech History / UPE (Paris), Departement of Compared History e-mail: [email protected] Keywords virtutes occultae, astral magic, medieval theory, experiments, classification and definition of magic, history of science Introduction Nicolas Weill-Parot is the perfect example of the very rare and distinguished scientists ceaselessly investigating the subject of astral images (talismans porting simple or sophisticated motives of the universe), the relation of medieval science to its limits and also undeterminable structures seen as virtutes occultae. He is a former student of École Normale Supérieure of Ulm street. He defended his thesis on “astral images” in 1998 at University Paris 10 (Nanterre).2 He then delivered his lectures during 1999–2011 at University Paris 8 (Saint-Denis) as maître de conférences and during 2011–2016 at Université Paris-Est Créteil Val de Marne as professeur. Since 2016, he has been a professor at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE) in Paris. He there continues in the prestigious French tradition of historians of science, giving Tuesday lectures after Danielle Jacquart (Histoire des sciences au Moyen Âge) (Beaujouan, 1992; Jacquart, 1998). Nicolas Weill-Parot is an author of articles, critical editions and important monographies in the intellectual history and the history of sciences cited throughout this text. He got famous by developing the conceptual theory of relations between science and magic and then he progressively orientated towards the “blind points” of medieval science itself: hidden natural properties, magnetic attraction and theoretical implications of vacuum. -

What Is (Was) Alchemy?∗
Vol. 112 (2007) ACTA PHYSICA POLONICA A Supplement What Is (Was) Alchemy?¤ A. Tramer, R. Voltz, F. Lahmani and J. Szczepinska-Tramer In Memoriam of our friend Jurek A serious scienti¯c journal seems to be the wrong place for a paper on alchemy. However, we believe that the history of science includes knowledge of the complex relations between speci¯c scienti¯c disciplines and what is called the \world-view" (Weltanschauung): the image of the world corresponding to a given stage of cultural development. The world-view, born of the \marriage" of Aris- totle's philosophy with Christian theology, was for many centuries largely pre- dominant in Europe of the Middle Ages and of the Renaissance. The \scienti¯c revolution" [1] of the 16{17th centuries: the birth of the \new cosmology" of Coper- nicus, Galileo, and Kepler and of the \new mechanics" of Galileo and Newton was limited to the physical science, but its direct consequence was the appearance of the \new philosophy". The mechanistic, rationalist and empirical philosophy of the enlightenment rejected the magic elements of the medieval world-view. Without actually being directly concerned by new theories or denied by newly discovered facts, a number of disciplines did not survive such changes in the intellectual climate. We will try to show how alchemy, an integral part of the medieval world-view, was doomed to death by the spirit of enlightenment well before its o±cial death which coincided with the appearance of the modern chemistry of Lavoisier and Dalton. Only its phantom is still alive. A brief history of alchemy In order to understand alchemy, we must free ourselves from a number of legends.
