If you want to peruse the art at the bistro, make sure you request a table on the martini bar side, where they have a rotating gallery. The martinis are outstanding. I tried a crème brulee flavored martini that was incredible. The menu at Ocean 60, as in most upscale restaurants, changes with the seasons, though a few menu items remain the same. One of the bistro’s trademark dishes is a whole fried fish, dusted in a light cornmeal, perfectly scored (so you can lift the fish right off the bone), and served with yucca fries, a Nappa cabbage salad and a brandy citrus dipping sauce. The fish will depend upon the season, but the preparation remains the same.

Besides a great pie, they also serve an appetizer called Joseph’s Brushetta, which adds a little zing to the classic Brushetta by adding jalapeño peppers. Their gourmet, double-baked, thin crust pizza is also something you should try. It’s not so thin that you feel like you’re eating pizza on a cracker, but is the perfect thickness. I’m a fan of their Florence gourmet pizza. Feta, sun-dried tomatoes, leaf spinach and fresh mushrooms over a tomato herb sauce on that perfect, thin, homemade crust completes the Florence. While Joseph’s has three locations in the First Coast area, the Atlantic Beach location is the only one that serves genuine Italian gelato. It’s not the only dessert worth trying. They have homemade cannoli, cakes a taste of atlantic beach and a delicious tiramisu. The tiramisu might not have the presentation, but after one bite, you just won’t care. 28 march 22-28, 2007 | entertaining u newspaper we were dead before the ship even sank album review

Artist: Modest Mouse Title: We Were Dead before the Ship Even Sank Release Date: 03.20.07 Label: Sony BMG/Epic

“This fits like clothes made out of wasps!” is poetry. As he ages, is finally stabilizing and steering his career to its place in the American rock lexicon. He has settled on a style for this phase of his career. The weathered-looking packaging features a simple graphic of a hot air balloon with an anchor as the basket. It is titled We Were Dead before the Ship Even Sank and it is rich with the same poetics and forthright nature as the previous Modest Mouse album. This turn-of-the-century theme is pleasant and lends a sort of sarcasm to his stark honesty. The music is downright Irish at points and then soaked in a thin layer of Eastern European retro rock. It reminds me of Good News for People Who Love Bad News in two ways: I eagerly an- ticipated its release and I wasn’t disappointed when I listened to it. There are not many CDs I run to the store to purchase the day it comes out, but this one is worth it. Isaac Brock is showing the depth of his musicianship on We Were Dead…, and he sounds more confi- dent here than he ever has. His gospel-and-spit style of singing right at you is still intact and executed deftly. This album exquisitely establishes some sounds and rhythms that are distinctly his own to use over and over, without making the album feel at all like a replica of prior releases. From the whistle of that guitar bend to the choppy rhythms, this is Modest Mouse in full affect. The phrase “indie rock” is so inadequate for describing any kind of band, that a friend of mine describes certain bands as “having the stomp.” Modest Mouse cer- tainly has the stomp. When I met Isaac Brock, back when he lived in Gainesville, he was arrogant and high, and that showed in his music at the time, but since making the move to Sony, Isaac’s albums display maturity and growth, without losing his unique take and vigor. Speaking of Florida – Isaac hasn’t forgotten about his time here with us. In fact the song ‘Florida’ is a little too accurate in its tone and verbage. The Smith’s legendary guitarist is a perfect fit. In ‘Florida’ Johnny brings the 80s to Isaac a little too much, but in return Isaac ushers Johnny’s syncopated guitar stylings into Modest Mouse’s knack for staggered and emotive rhythms. Johnny’s ratcheted riffing is a brilliant complement to Isaac’s string-slur- ring and slop-solos. Jeremiah’s disco-running-with-a-limp beats stagger, stop and pounce throughout this twisting and angst-ridden song. Even bassist, (who is the second nicest dude ever), gets up on Johnny’s 80s kick in a couple of the songs. They are always innovating, so even though they have a definitive sound, it never gets tired. As with every new Modest Mouse album, and even the release, Isaac and friends never fail to release their best album yet. - by jon bosworth love’s funny that way album review

Artist: Kathie Baillie Title: Love’s Funny That Way Release Date: 02.20.2007 Label: Aspirion Records

Kathie Baillie is an honest country singer because she has lived what she is singing about. Whether her first solo CD, Love’s Funny That Way, goes down as traditional, pop, or even jazz; it still is country. This col- lection of cover songs and originals are about love in all of its forms – romantic, maternal, undependable, and even love of the Lord – sorry, no bad boys in all ten tracks, 41 minutes and 3 seconds! Michael Bonagura, Baillie’s husband of 25 years, is the producer. He also plays a powerful electric gui- tar in the title song in the opening number equally matching his wife’s assertive vocals. Nuances – you know, those stretched-out words – add a whole lot of feeling. The opening sound may be pop, but just around the corner of the musical journey of Baillie’s life is tra- ditional country with acoustic and fiddle and…Vince Gill. Yes, good friends, label mates (RCA), even fans of one another, their voices are great together singing Gill’s ‘Never Knew Lonely.’ Horns and woodwinds with a little piano give a jazzy feel to a song Kathie and Michael wrote for their daughter called ‘One Thing.’ Eighteen year-old Alyssa’s credits on this album are singer/songwriter/piano/guitar. She joins her mother and Paulette Carlson on a nostalgic side trip in Carlson’s ‘Old Glass Case.’ Banjo, mandolin and dulcimer add warmth to this lovely piece with a story behind it. “Lyssie gave me a plate she signed one year for Mother’s Day,” recalls Baillie. “After hearing Paulette’s new CD with this song on it, I knew the three of us had to sing it for my CD. I have that glass case and that plate!” ‘All Fall Down,’ written by newcomer Tony Kerr, rocks. “We added the ‘choir’ at the end, long after the song was recorded,” says Michael, “[It’s] one of the advantages of having a home studio as opposed to buy- ing studio time.” It may not be the choir, but it is inspiring. ‘Come to Me’ represents Baillie’s faith connection. She and Alyssa wrote the lyrics for a cousin in a troubled marriage. It begins with an instrumental prelude – organ, wah guitar and piano. All you have to do is raise your arms high above your head and “just sing Hallelujah.” No stranger to success, as lead singer of Baillie and the Boys, the trio released six albums to score a total of ten Top 10 country hits. “It’s a strange musical world right now,” she says, “We are just who we are, not trying to fit into anything Nashville.” She adds, “I think I have something to give.” - BY CAROL ELLIOTT

art after dark preview by donald dusinberre [email protected]

Honestly, Jacksonville’s art scene has been gaining momentum and talent over the last couple of years, and those of you who are reading this article probably know it already. But maybe you’re reading this and you’re not necessarily up on the arts; maybe you’re waiting for a table or avoiding the awkward banter of your hairstylist. No matter. You now have a key to enter the art world, beginning, of course, with the perusal of this article. If you finish it, you’ll learn just how fun and easy it is to see an art exhibition in Jacksonville. Let’s hope the folks already seated ahead of you order dessert, shall we? We’re fortunate to live in a city so inclined to develop new and original ways to deliver new artwork by up-and-coming artists. Our more progressive fellow citizens have developed a variety of ways to authentically present the art of our most talented artists, and as a result, we’re usually a very short distance from good, new artwork. Not only do we have dozens of small neighborhood galleries, as well as local restaurants outfit- ting their walls with painterly wonders, but we also have the monthly downtown Artwalk and the annual Art After Dark at the Florida Theatre. Hosted by the Florida Theatre on Friday, March 30th from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Art After Dark features a number of fine local artists, including Jason Tetlak, Stephanie Shieldhouse, Ryan Ketterman, Chris A. Grisaffe, and Melissa Russell. This year’s Art After Dark will be the 11th annual exhibition, and, as always, all the art- work will be available for sale. Developed as a fundraiser for the Theatre itself, every purchase puts aside ten percent to the Friends of the Florida Theatre organization. Remember, not every great work of art is at the museum. Some great art is brand new and featured at your favorite coffee shop or other non-art related establishment. Sure, museums are safe and easy, with the benefits of a consensus of experts who have decided that certain works have artistic value. You might feel comfortable with museums, but that doesn’t mean you’ll definitely like what they’re showing. They can’t possibly know about every piece of art, and classics are born every day. Right here I want to ask a ques- deal with Nextel, didn’t Sprint say they might change to follow the spokesman for UPS and the Good Ole tion, and maybe someone out there can answer this the name next year?
