The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out wild pitch. St. Paul added four more in the top of the second on a two-run double from Blake Schmit, an RBI triple from Dan Motl, and a Michael Lang sacrifice fly. The Goldeyes pulled within one run, scoring four times in the bottom of the third. Reggie Abercrombie hit a two-run single and was followed by a Kyle Martin two-run homer. Josh Allen hit a solo shot in the top of the sixth to re- extend the Saints’ lead to 6-4. St. Paul tacked on a pair of two-out, unearned runs in the top of the seventh. Kevin McGovern started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing seven runs, six earned, on six hits in 6.0+ innings. McGovern walked three and struck out two. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE DOGS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 11-10 all-time against the Chicago Dogs, including a 4-5 record at Impact Field. The Dogs are in their second season of existence, and are based out of the village of Rosemont, Illinois, which is located 18 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The Dogs compete alongside the Goldeyes in the American Association North Division. Chicago plays at state-of-the-art Impact Field, a $60 Million facility with a 6,300 seating capacity. The Dogs were 45-54 during their expansion season in 2018, and finished 34-27 following an 11-27 start. Former Major League player and manager Butch Hobson enters his second year as Chicago’s manager. Hobson enjoyed an eight-year playing career in the Majors with the Boston Red Sox, California Angels, and New York Yankees. In 1977, Hobson hit 30 home runs and had 112 RBI for Boston. Hobson is in his 31st season managing professional baseball, and skippered the Red Sox from 1992-94. Hobson has extensive experience managing in independent baseball, and is one of only four managers in the history of the industry with more than 1,000 wins. Hobson led the Nashua Pride (Atlantic League/Can-Am League) for eight seasons, including an Atlantic League championship in 2000 and a Can-Am League title in 2007. Hobson also guided the Atlantic League’s Lancaster Barnstormers for six years, winning a championship in 2014. In 2017, Hobson led the Low-A Midwest League’s Kane County Cougars (Arizona Diamondbacks) to a 72-65 record. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 48-39, in fourth place in the American Association North Division, and 9.5 games behind the Fargo- Moorhead RedHawks. The Goldeyes are also 6.0 games behind the St. Paul Saints for the North’s second playoff spot. The Goldeyes were just swept by the Saints in a two-game series at Shaw Park. The Goldeyes are seventh in the American Association in hitting (.273), 10th in pitching (4.68), and first in fielding (.987). The Chicago Dogs are 52-35, in third place in the North, 5.5 games behind the RedHawks, and 2.0 games behind the Saints. The Dogs just swept a three-game series from the Milwaukee Milkmen at Routine Field. The Dogs are second in the league in batting (.296), fifth in pitching (4.32), and 10th in defence (.970). This is the last of four head-to-head series this season between Winnipeg and Chicago. The Goldeyes are 4-5 against the Dogs in 2019. PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS TONIGHT’S STARTERS: The Goldeyes go with all-star 8/22 at CHI: LHP Mitchell Lambson (12-2, 2.85) vs. LHP Austin Wright (5-7, 4.38) right-hander Kevin Hilton who is 3-10 with a 4.69 ERA in 17 8/23 at CHI: TBA vs. TBA starts this season between the Goldeyes and the Texas AirHogs. Hilton was acquired from Texas on August 9th along with Jonathan Moroney in exchange for four players to be named later. Hilton is sixth in the American Association in innings pitched (109.1). Hilton took the loss vs. Chicago last Friday, allowing four earned runs on six hits in 5.0+ innings. Hilton walked four and struck out three. Hilton has allowed three or fewer earned runs in 10 of his 17 starts, and has allowed four or fewer earned runs in 12 of them. Hilton has walked two batters or less in 12 of his 17 starts, and has walked three batters or less in 14 of them. Hilton has pitched at least 6.0 innings in 11 of his 17 starts. Hilton pitched 1.0 scoreless inning of relief for the South Division during the American Association All-Star Game on July 23rd at St. Paul. In two seasons of professional baseball, Hilton is 4-12 with a 4.75 ERA in 28 games, 20 of them as a starting pitcher. Hilton has averaged 2.8 walks per nine innings during his career. Hilton is 1-2 with a 5.75 ERA in three career starts against Chicago. Hilton is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one career start at Impact Field. The Dogs go with former Major League right-hander Carlos Zambrano who is 3-0 with a 4.82 ERA in two starts and 30 relief appearances this season. Zambrano picked up the win at Winnipeg last Friday, allowing one earned run on six hits in 5.1 innings. Zambrano walked none and struck out seven. Zambrano pitched 12 seasons in the Major Leagues from 2001-12, compiling a 132-91 (.592) record with a 3.66 ERA in 1,959.0 innings. Zambrano finished fifth in the National League Cy Young Award balloting three times (2004, 2006, 2007), while making three National League All-Star teams (2004, 2006, 2008). Zambrano also won three National League Silver Slugger Awards (2006, 2008, 2009), and hit 24 home runs, which ranks tied for seventh among pitchers in Major League history. Zambrano helped the Chicago Cubs reach the Major League playoffs in 2003, 2007, and 2008, and spent 11 total years with the Cubs before playing for the Miami Marlins in 2012. Zambrano ranks second in Cubs’ franchise history with 1,542 strikeouts. After spending the 2013 season in the Philadelphia Phillies’ minor league system, Zambrano retired from professional baseball before returning to action briefly last year in the Mexican League. Zambrano signed with the Dogs on April 16th. Zambrano is in his 18th season of professional baseball, and is 168-112 (.600) lifetime with seven saves and a 3.65 ERA in 520 appearances, 384 of them as a starting pitcher. Zambrano is 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA in one start and two relief appearances in his career against Winnipeg. Zambrano is 2-0 with a 4.94 ERA in one start and 16 relief appearances at Impact Field. GOLDEYES MANAGER: Rick Forney is now in his 14th season as Goldeyes’ manager, and his 23rd overall within the organization. During his first 13 years at the helm, the Goldeyes have posted a .545 overall winning percentage (698-583), 10 winning seasons, nine playoff appearances, and an American Association-record three championships. Forney was voted American Association Manager of the Year in 2011, and managed the American Association during the American Association/Can-Am League All-Star Game in 2017. Forney’s .553 winning percentage in the American Association (2011-18) is the third-highest in league history (there have been 51 total American Association managers through the 2018 season). Forney pitched professionally for 10 years, including four seasons with the Goldeyes. During his playing career, Forney was 89-56 (.614) with a 3.63 ERA, and reached the Triple-A level in 1995. LAMBSON NAMED PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Goldeyes’ left-hander Mitchell Lambson was named the American Association’s Pitcher of the Week for August 12th-18th. Lambson was 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA in two starts, including a complete game, two-hit shutout at St. Paul on August 12th. Five days later, Lambson picked up the win vs. Chicago, holding the Dogs to two earned runs over 7.0 innings. GOLDEYES ACQUIRE OUTFIELDERS MARINCOV AND PRICE: The Winnipeg Goldeyes acquired outfielders Tyler Marincov and John Price Jr. on August 16th in separate trades. Marincov was acquired from the Kansas City T-Bones in exchange for a player to be named later. Marincov hit .236 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 19 games with Kansas City.
