The Goldeyes made it 5-1 in the fourth on a Hill sacrifice fly. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE REDHAWKS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 156-181 all-time against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, including an 87-87 record in home games, and a 75-81 record at Shaw Park. The RedHawks are in their 24th season, and have been one of independent baseball’s elite franchises since beginning play in 1996. The RedHawks won a Northern League record five championships (1998, 2003, 2006, 2009, and 2010) before joining the American Association in 2011 along with the Goldeyes, Gary SouthShore RailCats, and Kansas City T-Bones. Fargo-Moorhead won the American Association North Division in 2012 and 2013, and became the first team in league history to win 60-plus games in back-to-back seasons (65 wins in 2012, 62 wins in 2013). The 65 wins tied a then-American Association record, which has since been surpassed five times. The Goldeyes and RedHawks have clashed in the postseason 10 times, with the most recent meeting coming in the 2012 American Association Division Series. James Bennett was hired as the third manager in franchise history this off-season. Bennett pitched three seasons in the Seattle Mariners’ and San Diego Padres’ organizations, compiling a 3.54 ERA from 1988-90. Bennett has extensive coaching experience in affiliated ball, including pitching coach for the High-A California League’s San Jose Giants. Two-time National League Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum pitched for San Jose in 2006 while Bennett was pitching coach. Bennett has served as pitching/bench coach for the Australian Baseball League’s Brisbane Bandits since 2015, and was recently named pitching coach for the Australian National Team. Brisbane has won each of the last four ABL championships. Bennett’s son, TJ, played for the Lincoln Saltdogs in 2018 and is a current member of the RedHawks’ roster. Former World Series champion Chris Coste, who starred for the RedHawks from 1996-99, enters his second year as Fargo-Moorhead’s hitting coach. Coste worked his way from the Northern League to the Major Leagues where he won the 2008 World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies. During their 15 years in the Northern League, the RedHawks qualified for the postseason 14 times, made seven trips to the Northern League Championship Series, and never finished with a regular season winning percentage below .558. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 36-27, in fourth place in the American Association North Division, and 4.5 games behind the Fargo- Moorhead RedHawks. The Goldeyes just swept a three-game series from the Texas AirHogs at Shaw Park. A’s News Clips, Saturday, April 21, 2012 Oakland A's fall to Cleveland Indians 4-3 By Carl Steward, Oakland Tribune Yoenis Cespedes had a major league first Friday night with his first three-hit game. Alas, according to A's starter Graham Godfrey, he also had a first -- the worst control game of his life. "That may have been the most walks I've ever given up in a game," Godfrey said after he issued five bases on balls and hit two batters in the A's 4-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians before 14,340 fans at the Oakland Coliseum. Godfrey (0-3) gave up all four Indians runs, and three of those runs were a result of batters he either walked or hit. What was particularly frustrating was that he said he had good stuff but just couldn't command it. "Everything felt great, and I made a lot of good pitches that ended up not being called a strike," he said. "I'm a control guy, and that's very uncharacteristic of me. There's something not right, but I still have a lot of confidence in my stuff and I'm looking forward to my next outing." To wit, Godfrey walked just five batters in 25 innings in 2011 with the A's (five appearances, four starts). "He got behind some guys and he's done that a little bit in the past, but he seems to be able to recover," manager Bob Melvin said. "It didn't get out of hand tonight, but it was not his best effort." Former Oakland third baseman Jack Hannahan drove in three of the Indians' runs with a second-inning sacrifice fly and a two-run double in the fourth.

  • A's News Clips, Wednesday, April 27, 2011 Brandon Mccarthy
A’s News Clips, Wednesday, April 27, 2011 Brandon McCarthy, Oakland A's offense struggle in loss to Los Angeles Angels By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune ANAHEIM -- A's starter Brandon McCarthy was left in long enough to allow 14 hits Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Angels. Some were dinks. Some were well-struck. They all hurt, and the Angels handed the A's an 8-3 defeat in front of 37,228 fans at Angel Stadium. That clinched the three-game series for Los Angeles and assured the A's a losing record on their seven-game road trip against American League West foes. After Jered Weaver shut them out Monday, it appeared the A's were getting their easiest assignment of the series against rookie right-hander Tyler Chatwood. The A's scraped together just six hits. After taking the lead on Conor Jackson's two-run homer in the third, the A's didn't notch another hit until Kevin Kouzmanoff's double with two outs in the ninth. "It's just one of those things we've got to put behind us and try to salvage the series," Jackson said. The A's will try to avoid a three-game sweep Wednesday against former Athletic Dan Haren, who brings a 4-1 record and 1.46 ERA into the game. McCarthy came in with a 2.10 ERA. He gave up 14 hits in 51/3 innings and left with the A's trailing 7-3. It was the most hits allowed by an A's starter since Barry Zito surrendered 15 in a July 8, 2003, game against Tampa Bay.

  • International League News & Notes
International League News & Notes August 31, 2006 BUFFALO BISONS BISONS TAKE THRUWAY SERIES CAP: With their 6-2 win over Rochester last night, the Bisons clinched the 2006 Thruway Series Cup Championship. Each year since the Herd rejoined the International League in 1998, they have competed with their closest rivals, the Rochester Red Wings and Syracuse SkyChiefs, for a series championship that is named after the expressway that connects them all. This year, the Bisons went 11-5 against the SkyChiefs and already have an 8-5 record against the Red Wings. The championship is Buffalo’s fifth in nine years, also taking the cup in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004. ALL-STAR HONORS: Outfielder Jason Dubois was named to the post-season International League All-Star team on Monday. The slugger is closing in on a Bisons’ triple crown as he ranks first on the team with 21 home runs (T-7th in IL) and 83 RBI (4th in IL) and is just behind Franklin Gutierrez (.281) for those that qualify with a .276 batting average. Dubois also leads the team with a .489 slugging percentage, is tied for the lead with 52 extra- base hits and is 2 nd with 30 doubles. He would be just the third player to win the team’s triple crown in the modern era, joining Russ Morman in 1993 (.320, 22 HR, 77 RBI) and Benny Distefano in 1988 (.263, 19 HR, 63 RBI). QUEST FOR QUALIFICATION: Pitcher Hyang-Nam Choi has been dominating for the Herd of late, with only one earned run since July 27.
