Winnipeg took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Kyle Martin RBI single and a Dominic Ficociello two-run single. Javion Randle hit a solo home run leading off the second to pull the AirHogs within 3-1. Winnipeg re-extended the lead in the bottom half when Tyler Hill’s fielder’s choice drove in Alex Perez. The Goldeyes made it 5-1 in the fourth on a Hill sacrifice fly. Texas scratched out runs in the fifth and sixth innings before Winnipeg broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the seventh. Both Hill and Carlos Garcia scored on wild pitches. Willy Garcia had an RBI double and later scored on an error. Perez capped the inning with a two-out, RBI single. The AirHogs scored their final run in the top of the eighth. Parker French started for the Goldeyes and picked up the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits in 6.1 innings. French walked none and struck out three. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE REDHAWKS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 156-181 all-time against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, including an 87-87 record in home games, and a 75-81 record at Shaw Park. The RedHawks are in their 24th season, and have been one of independent baseball’s elite franchises since beginning play in 1996. The RedHawks won a Northern League record five championships (1998, 2003, 2006, 2009, and 2010) before joining the American Association in 2011 along with the Goldeyes, Gary SouthShore RailCats, and Kansas City T-Bones. Fargo-Moorhead won the American Association North Division in 2012 and 2013, and became the first team in league history to win 60-plus games in back-to-back seasons (65 wins in 2012, 62 wins in 2013). The 65 wins tied a then-American Association record, which has since been surpassed five times. The Goldeyes and RedHawks have clashed in the postseason 10 times, with the most recent meeting coming in the 2012 American Association Division Series. James Bennett was hired as the third manager in franchise history this off-season. Bennett pitched three seasons in the Seattle Mariners’ and San Diego Padres’ organizations, compiling a 3.54 ERA from 1988-90. Bennett has extensive coaching experience in affiliated ball, including pitching coach for the High-A California League’s San Jose Giants. Two-time National League Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum pitched for San Jose in 2006 while Bennett was pitching coach. Bennett has served as pitching/bench coach for the Australian Baseball League’s Brisbane Bandits since 2015, and was recently named pitching coach for the Australian National Team. Brisbane has won each of the last four ABL championships. Bennett’s son, TJ, played for the Lincoln Saltdogs in 2018 and is a current member of the RedHawks’ roster. Former World Series champion Chris Coste, who starred for the RedHawks from 1996-99, enters his second year as Fargo-Moorhead’s hitting coach. Coste worked his way from the Northern League to the Major Leagues where he won the 2008 World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies. During their 15 years in the Northern League, the RedHawks qualified for the postseason 14 times, made seven trips to the Northern League Championship Series, and never finished with a regular season winning percentage below .558. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 36-27, in fourth place in the American Association North Division, and 4.5 games behind the Fargo- Moorhead RedHawks. The Goldeyes just swept a three-game series from the Texas AirHogs at Shaw Park. The Goldeyes are eighth in the American Association in hitting (.265), seventh in pitching (4.50), and first in fielding (.989). The RedHawks are 41-23, in first place in the North, and 1.0 game ahead of the St. Paul Saints. The RedHawks are first in the league in batting (.293), first in pitching (3.53), and tied for seventh in defence (.978). This is the second of four head-to-head series this season between Winnipeg and Fargo-Moorhead. The RedHawks won two of three from the Goldeyes at Shaw Park earlier this month. PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS TONIGHT’S STARTERS: The Goldeyes go with all-star 7/28 vs. FAR: TBA vs. RHP Ryan Williams (4-0, 2.57) left-hander Mitchell Lambson who is 7-2 with a 2.90 ERA in 7/30 at GAR: TBA vs. TBA 13 starts. Lambson is tied for fifth in the American 7/31 at GAR: TBA vs. TBA Association in ERA, third in strikeouts (76), and first in 8/1 at GAR: TBA vs. TBA innings pitched (93.0). Lambson pitched 0.2 scoreless innings on Tuesday at the American Association All-Star Game in St. Paul. Lambson’s last regular season appearance came last Saturday at Kansas City. Lambson picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits over 7.0 innings. Lambson walked none, struck out five, and was pitching on three days of rest. On June 26th at Sioux City, Lambson set a career-high with 11 strikeouts, besting the nine strikeouts he recorded last April 15th while pitching for the Mexican League’s Pericos de Puebla. In his two starts prior to June 26th, Lambson pitched back-to-back complete games, including a six-hit shutout at Gary SouthShore on June 13th. Lambson has pitched 6.0 innings or more in 12 of his 13 starts this season, and has pitched 7.0 innings or more in nine of them. After beginning the 2018 season in the Mexican League, Lambson returned to the Goldeyes in June and was 8-6 with a 3.81 ERA in 17 starts and one relief appearance. Lambson finished ninth in the American Association in ERA and tied for fourth in wins above replacement (WAR) among pitchers (2.8). Lambson allowed three or fewer earned runs in 11 of his 17 starts, and allowed four or fewer earned runs in 14 of them. Lambson walked three batters or less in 16 of his 17 starts. Lambson pitched 6.0 innings or more in 12 of 17 starts, including seven starts of 7.0-plus innings. During the Goldeyes’ 2017 championship season, Lambson was7-3 with one save and a 3.98 ERA in one start and 38 relief appearances. Lambson was then 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in six postseason relief appearances, including 1.2 shutout innings in the clinching Game Five of the American Association Championship Series on September 20th vs. Wichita. Lambson is in his ninth season of professional baseball, and is 50-29 (.633) lifetime with 10 saves and a 3.36 ERA in 267 appearances, 42 of them as a starting pitcher. Lambson has averaged 8.4 strikeouts per nine innings as a professional versus only 2.2 walks. Lambson was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 19th round in 2011 out of Arizona State University (Tempe, Arizona). Lambson helped the Sun Devils reach the College World Series in 2009 and 2011, and is tied for second in program history with 102 appearances. Lambson is 2-3 with a 6.37 ERA in four starts and five relief appearances in his career against Fargo-Moorhead. Lambson is 10-7 with a 3.60 ERA in 14 starts and 18 relief appearances in his career at Shaw Park. The RedHawks go with right-hander Bret Helton who is 3-3 with a 3.33 ERA in nine starts this season. Helton took the loss vs. St. Paul last Saturday, allowing four earned runs on four hits in 5.0 innings. Helton walked seven and struck out three. Helton has allowed two or fewer earned runs in six of his nine starts. Helton signed with the RedHawks on June 8th. Helton was 6-6 with a 6.12 ERA in one start and 34 relief appearances last year for the Double-A Eastern League’s Altoona Curve (Pittsburgh Pirates). Helton was drafted by the Pirates in the 9th round in 2015 out of the University of Utah (Salt Lake City, Utah). Helton is in his fifth season of professional baseball, and is 27-27 lifetime with a 4.29 ERA in 114 games, 64 of them as a starting pitcher. Helton is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in one career appearance against Winnipeg, which took place at Shaw Park on July 3rd. GOLDEYES MANAGER: Rick Forney is now in his 14th season as Goldeyes’ manager, and his 23rd overall within the organization. During his first 13 years at the helm, the Goldeyes have posted a .545 overall winning percentage (698-583), 10 winning seasons, nine playoff appearances, and an American Association-record three championships. Forney was voted American Association Manager of the Year in 2011, and managed the American Association during the American Association/Can-Am League All-Star Game in 2017. Forney’s .553 winning percentage in the American Association (2011-18) is the third-highest in league history (there have been 51 total American Association managers through the 2018 season).
