Historic Coast Culture’s Farm‐to‐Fork Chef Series

Presented by the St. Johns Cultural Council Overview

Food is a major part of understanding any culture or region. On Florida’s Historic Coast, the culinary scene reflects 450 years of its coastal location and diverse heritage. From the original Spanish settlers, British colonists and the Greeks and Minorcans who emigrated here, visitors can savor a fascinating array of local culinary tastes and farm‐to‐table dishes. Visitors can experience everything from fine dining and quick eats to food festivals, in‐town and farm‐tasting events and culinary classes. Vision

Today, farm‐to‐table Culinary is one of Florida’s Historic Coast’s key cultural assets that offers cultural travelers even deeper experiences while they are visiting.

To showcase St. Johns County’s farm‐to‐table restaurants and farms, the St. Johns Cultural Council is creating a series of Farm‐to‐Fork Chef Dinners.

Each will feature a top local chef from a farm‐to‐table restaurant and a local farm(s).

The Chef Series will include both “In‐Town Dinners” at unusual places and “Farm Dinners” in rural settings. These culinary events will also feature local artisans, farm‐to‐table produce, local seafood and/or meats, farm‐to‐table desserts as well as local spirits.

Each event will be unique, with a theme chosen by the Chef(s) for the location. These tastings will feel like an intimate dining experience where 30‐40 guests can speak one‐on‐one with the Chef(s) as well as local artisans and farms.

Tickets for these events are $125 each.

See www.HistoricCoastCulture.com/culinary for more culinary events on Florida’s Historic Coast.

Photos by Kim Reed Visionary rock artist Todd Rundgren returned to the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall for the first time since his two sold-out shows in 2015. On Thursday, August 16, the concert hall hosted “An Unpredictable Evening with Todd Rundgren”.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Todd Rundgren began playing guitar as a teenager, going on to found and front The Nazz, the quintessential `60’s cult group. In 1969, he left the band to pursue a solo career, recording his debut offering, the legendary Runt. But it was 1972’s seminal Something/Anything?, on which he played all the instruments, sang all the vocal parts, and acted as his own producer, that catapulted Todd into the superstar limelight, prompting the press to unanimously dub him ‘Rock’s New Wunderkind’. In 1974, Todd formed Utopia, an entirely new approach to the concept of interactive musicianship, and embarked on an extensive round of touring and recording. Standout Utopia offerings included Oops! Wrong Planet, Adventures in Utopia, and Oblivion. Along the way, Utopia combined technical virtuosity and creative passion to create music that, for millions, defined the term “.” Rundgren’s myriad production projects include albums by Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, Psychedelic Furs, Meatloaf, XTC, Grand Funk Railroad, and Hall and Oates. Rounding out his reputation as rock’s Renaissance Man, Rundgren composed all the music and lyrics for Joe Papp’s 1989 Off-Broadway production of Joe Orton’s Up Against It (the screenplay commissioned by The Beatles for what was meant to have been their third motion picture). He also has composed the music for http://eujacksonville.com/2018/08/17/todd-rundgren-still-making- a number of television series, including Pee friends/ Wee’s Playhouse and Crime Story.

ROAD TRIP Tasting History in St. Augustine BY ANN SCHMIDT | AUGUST 19, 2018 0 SHARES

Carriage in St. Augustine Photo 1: Flagler College Photo 2: Peace Pie Shop An open invitation to a Women’s Food Alliance (WFA) event prompted me to go up to St. Augustine – and what a charming old city it is! The venue was the very cool Corazon Cinema and Cafe, so a leisurely drive up I-95 brought me to the nation’s oldest city, gorgeous with magnolia-lined cobblestone streets, whimsical wood cottages and the massive coquina stone Castillo de San Marcos guarding Mantanzas Bay. On North San Marco Avenue, I stopped at the Uptown Scratch Kitchen Food Truck, next to the DOS wine and coffee bar, for a local IPA and fish and chips. There, I checked out the latest edible Northeast Florida, always an excellent guide to the local scene. Quaint Inns St. Augustine is a town of charming bed-and-breakfasts, and I was lucky enough to stay at the 1904 Casa de Sueños in the historic downtown, where I could hear horse-drawn carriages clip-clop from my balcony overlooking Cordova Street. Their sister property, the 1791 St. Francis Inn, was turned into an inn in 1845 by Anna Marie Dummett, daughter of a sugar plantation owner. Its lush courtyard is perfect for an early-morning cup of coffee. Stay at one of the B & Bs where you can leave your car, because walking is the best way to get around. Henry Flagler’s railroad and opulent hotels turned St. Augustine into the winter resort of the Gilded Age, and are a big part of the city's charm. Wandering around the shaded and scented streets – jasmine and magnolia were in full bloom – I stopped at Flagler College, originally Flagler’s Ponce de Leon Hotel. A tour takes you around the public spaces: the dining room with Tiffany stained-glass windows and murals, the Grand Parlour lighted with Austrian crystal chandeliers, and the lobby with domed ceiling. The dining room makes a luxurious cafeteria for the college’s 2,500 liberal arts students, although the plastic ketchup bottles look out of place. The Casa Monica has been exquisitely renovated, and the Alcazar Hotel is the Lightner Museum, home to an eclectic collection that includes human hair art, Tiffany glass, salt and pepper shakers, and early typewriters. In the summer the last Thursday of the month, Lightner After Hours features music, drink and food in the pool area. St. Augustine Happenings I arrived at the Corazon Cinema for the WFA event. One of the oldest brick buildings in St. Augustine, this former cigar store and feed store has three small screening rooms, a cafe and lots of fun events and great movies on the calendar – one of my favorites, “Bringing Up Baby,” was scheduled for June. We started the evening with snacks and a Julia Child trivia quiz. Nancy Guarnieri, the chef from the St. Francis Inn, filled me in on the food truck scene, in particular those at Dog Rose Brewing Company. Cindy Stavely from the Colonial Quarter said business was excellent in the restored historic village on the north end of St. George Street. Like a mini-Williamsburg, it has interactive exhibits you can tour with guides for a fee. Colonial Oak Music Park is a hot spot for live music, drinks from the bar under a huge oak tree and local shrimp with datil buffalo sauce from St. Augustine Fish Company. Jennifer King from Rype and Readi, an agricultural group with a downtown farm market, was collaborating with Picasso, a chef and medium, on their upcoming night of wine and spirit, certainly a whimsical pairing! We visited another WFA member’s shop, Peace Pie. Maryrose LaCavera and her family started the business, serving the ice cream sandwiches with pie-flavored fillings, including key lime, blueberry cobbler and dozens more. The next day, at the Rype and Readi Downtown Farm Market, I picked up some datil hot sauce and Sebago heritage potatoes. Down the street is the St. Augustine Distillery Co., maker of small-batch whiskey, rum, gin and vodka, where a free 45-minute tour includes tastings. Originally an ice plant, it has a bar and restaurant upstairs. I drove over the Bridge of Lions to St. Augustine Beach, checking out new restaurants near O’Steen’s, the legendary fried shrimp house – Blackfly for seafood, GAS Full Service with locally sourced ingredients, and some impressive food trucks at surf shops. There’s a Wednesday Market at the St. Augustine Beach Pier, with local crafts, baked goods and a hippie vibe. A few days’ visit seems barely enough, so it’s good to know that it’s only a five-hour drive from Miami.

SoCalPulse.com - Los Angeles August 28, 2018 Explore History in St. Augustine's Lincolnville Neighborhood By Lisa Kaylor on 08/28/2018, updated on 08/28/2018 Explore the old and the new in this historic neighborhood. Tucked into the southwest corner of St. Augustine, just past some of the historic city's most notable landmarks, is a neighborhood filled with Victorian homes and steeped in history. Lincolnville started life as Little Africa, a plot of land where freed slaves gathered to build homes and put down roots. It was renamed following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation The intersection of King and St. George streets was the site of a violent protest in 1964. (© Don Barrett/Flickr, Creative Commons) "Blacks were not allowed to move freely about the city except to go to work," said Regina Gayle Phillips, executive director of the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center. But the neighborhood flourished. Residents opened restaurants, movie houses, real estate companies, grocery stores, dance halls, etc., and prospered, establishing a strong middle-class neighborhood. But along with the rest of the country, residents of Lincolnville became fed up with the Jim Crow laws and began organizing marches and sit ins. Dr. Martin Luther King frequently joined demonstrations with community members like Henry Twine, the head of the local NAACP, and dentist Dr. Robert Hayling."Dr. King was arrested in St. Augustine," Phillips said. As was Twine's wife, Katherine, numerous times. The jails were overcrowded, Phillips said, and holding pens were constructed from chain-link fence to contain the overflow. "(Katherine) had a sombrero she took with her wherever she went. She used to say she takes her shade with her because she never knew when she'd be arrested," Phillips said. "The hat became iconic. It's in the Civil Rights museum." Events that took place in St. Augustine during that time were pivotal in bringing about the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended segregation. Today, the neighborhood offers much to explore, both old and new. It has become home to many artists and students of Flagler College. The Anniversary to Commemorate the Civil Rights Demonstrations (ACCORD) has placed historical markers at notable sites throughout the area, and the Florida Humanities Council developed an app of walking tours that leads users to various points of historical interest. This was the "colored school" from 1902 until 1928. Many of St. Augustine's notables were educated here, including NFL star Willie Galimore and civil rights leaders Henry and Katherine Twine. The museum includes exibits about life in the neighborhood and presents living history events. ACCORD MUSEUM ACCORD began in 2002 after Katherine Twine's death, to commemorate contributions to St. Augustine's civil rights movement. The museum was established in the former dental office of Dr. Robert Hayling, where many of the movement's planning sessions were held. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., attended several of them. It's also the beginning of the ACCORD Freedom Trail, which as markers posted throughout the community to tell the story of civil rights in St. Augustine. HAYLING FREEDOM PARK This park on Riberia Street honors Dr. Hayling's contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. It covers nine acres with gorgeous views of the San Sebastian and Matanzas rivers. On one end are the Let Freedom Ring Chimes—stationary chimes that can be played by visitors and are surrounded by granite and marble—and the Emancipation Proclamation Obelisk. BLUE HEN Before heading out to explore the historic trails, stop by the Blue Hen Café. Open for breakfast and lunch, it serves up southern cooking like biscuits and gravy and chicken biscuits. You can also try the blue crab quiche and barbecue pulled pork and grits. PRESERVED Located in one of the oldest houses in Lincolnville—built sometime between 1865 and 1885—this upscale restaurant serves dishes made from locally-sourced ingredients, like the seafood plateau that includes East Coast oysters and Mayport shrimp; and chicken sourced from Jacksonville's Black Hog Farms, served with Swiss chard, pearl onions and roasted grape tomatoes. PORCH FEST If you visit in November, stroll through Lincolnville during Porch Fest. More than 40 local musicians perform from six picturesque front-porch stages throughout the neighborhood. Snacks and drinks The Lincolnville Historic District is characterized by the Victorian homes that line its narrow streets. (©Ebyabe/Wikimedia are sold at the Corner Market. Don't forget the Commons) lawn chairs. LINCONVILLE FEST This fall festival celebrates the neighborhood's heritage with food, live music, dancing and family acitivies in Eddie Vickers Park. About 20 percent of the neighborhood's residents have been there since the '50s and '60s, and some will share their life experiences with visitors. https://www.wheretraveler.com/jacksonville/play/explore-history-st-augustines-lincolnville-neighborhood

FOLIO MUSIC Christina Sings Out Loud Local musician of Rain Dog Fame performs at Sing Out Loud Festival

story by JENNIFER MELVILLE With an unforgettable voice as huskily hypnotizing as a warm Southern summer evening, Jacksonville native Christina Wagner is a powerful presence in the NE Florida cultural scene. This pint-sized powerhouse knows how to draw a crowd. A singer and songwriter since childhood, Wagner's first professional performance took place at Thee Imperial in Downtown Jacksonville 17 years ago, when a friend dared her to get up onstage and sing a song with him. Since then, she’s performed all over the First Coast and is known to pick up the mic at Rain Dogs. Christina Wagner She’s also a strong proponent for the arts in Northeast Florida, Posted Wednesday, August 29, 2018 6:00 am booking and promoting rising talent and participating in cultural Folio A&E events like St. Augustine’s upcoming Sing Out Loud Festival. St. Augustine Amphitheater The nearly month-long celebration is held Sept. 1-22 at venues 1340 Highway A1A South throughout St. Augustine, featuring more than 200 local and St. Augustine, FL regional acts. Wagner will be performing along with Tim Barry,

Austin Lucas and Chuck Ragan as part of St. Augustine Amphitheatre’s Front Porch Showcase, Saturday, Sept. 22. Doors open at noon; Wagner’s performance commences at 12:15 p.m. She’s thrilled to participate in Sing Out Loud for the second time and looks forward to checking out other musicians and some comedians throughout the month. “There are just so many good acts. I’ll be like a kid in a candy store, just bouncing around,” Wagner laughs.“The older you get, the more you’re, like, ‘Oh, no, not a festival,’ you know what I mean?” Wagner jokes, “especially in Florida. You think of a bunch of people walking around, sweating their butts off. The way that they do it [at Sing Out Loud] keeps you moving around. Some of these are smaller, some of these are larger performances. It’s something I enjoy because you can go from venue to venue and it also makes you go into these different little pockets of these different stages that you might not have come across before.” The Sing Out Loud Festival website details a lineup schedule and venues, enumerating an eclectic mix of artists performing throughout the city. Jason Isbel & the 400 Unit, The Decemberists, Lucero, Iron Reagan, War on Women, Tim Barry and Southern Avenue are just a few of the seemingly endless acts scheduled. There’s something for fans of every genre. Wagner encourages Northeast Floridians to get out and experience the event. “The shows are free, it’s a good time of year, things aren’t brutally hot outside, and it’s nice to take a little day trip to St. Augustine,” she says, “It’s wonderful. You just have to experience it. You won’t be disappointed. There are restaurants. It’s kid-friendly. It’s like a little family trip.”Sing Out Loud is a dynamic celebration of all that this region has to offer. “It’s pretty incredible the amount of talent we have here,” Wagner says. “We have such a wide variety of different things, it’s exciting. I’ve been playing solo for 17 years around town and I’ve been able to be a part of it and watch it transform into what it is. It fluctuates sometimes, you know. You’ll have little pockets of dead time and you’ll have these glorious acts that come along. I think now it seems to be picking up more steam. In conjunction to a lot of the work that’s done with the St. Augustine Sing Out Loud Fest, we’re putting Northern Florida on the map.”Christina Wagner’s Sing Out Loud performance is one to put on your calendar. Her acoustic, alt-country, Americana style, flavored with a Latin nod to her Costa Rican heritage, is unique and unforgettable. In addition to her performances, Wagner is well-known locally as the owner of Rain Dogs, an eclectic bar that's a cultural gathering place in 5 Points, Riverside. The hang-out destination where new talent is discovered and people of vastly different walks of life sit side-by-side; maybe they're interacting, getting to know how others live. Among the rotating art shows, comedy, trivia, poetry jams, open mic, occasional political events, and a jam-packed performance calendar, there are few other places that feel so authentically Jacksonville. “There’s something going on every night of the week,” Wagner says. “Just swing by. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.” Wagner loves living and working in Jacksonville’s urban core, drawing attention to First Coast artists and performers and encouraging others to get involved in the local arts scene, which changes and grows constantly. “Go support live and local music. Most of the shows are affordable and you’ll be surprised. There’s something going on all the time,” she explains. “The more people attend these shows, the more people are going to be inspired to start these shows. And when you go out and support these kinds of events, the more we’re going to be putting it on, the more people are going to be inspired, the more of a pool of talent we’ll have to pick from. It all starts with the support.”Christina Wagner, Tim Barry, Austin Lucas, Chuck RaganStarts 12:15 p.m. Sept. 22, St. Augustine Amphitheatre's Front Porch Showcase, singoutloudfestival.com, free. http://folioweekly.com/stories/christina-sings-out-loud,20440

Creative Loafing has not been shy about our appreciation for the hard work that the staff and volunteers at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre are doing. The seaside shed was a must-visit spot in our Summer Guide, and we even took a drive to see Paramore, Soccer Mommy and Foster the People bring their lone Florida stop to Anastasia State Park (FTP did, however, just announce a November show at Miami's House of Creatives festival). SUMMER GUIDE 2018 St. Augustine Amphitheatre concerts should be on your summer to-do lists Well, it looks like organizers — who recently reported an additional $1.2 million in revenue above what was expected from events this year — want some of the Tampa Bay area in their lives, too. The monthlong Sing Out Loud Festival takes place at multiple St. Augustine venues and kicks off this weekend with free shows by more than half a dozen bands including Mountain Goats, David Dondero, Al Riggs and The Weepies. Also included in the Sing Out Loud agenda are Bay area acts Have Gun, Will Travel (playing Sept. 7), Dave Decker and Kristopher James (both playing on Sept. 15). There's also a September 21 showcase at Nobby's which includes Dan Padilla, Navin Ave. andFlat Stanley. A trio of Florida-based CL favorites — Lauris Vidal (Sept. 8), Beartoe (Sept. 16) and Hot Water Music's Chuck Ragan (Sept. 22) — are also on the bill. Most every show is free-to-attend save for a September 22 showcase featuring Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, The Decemberists and Lucero. CL will also be on hand September 20 when we participate in Sing Out Loud's "Perspectives on the Florida Music Scene" panel discussion. More info on Sing Out Loud's many activities is available via singoutloudfestival.com.
