Golden Aphrodite
Receiving Aphrodite At first glance Aphrodite seems to be a strange paradox. She is laughter-loving Aphrodite, always keen to promote fun and romantic intrigue, the owner of a special belt full of desire and distractions (Il. 14.215-7) And yet she, often working with her son Eros, is a powerful goddess, the life force essential for the generation of all beings, and also single-mindedly destructive when her will is thwarted, maddening (S. Ant. 790) and terrible (E. Hipp. 563). Sophocles sums her mixture of playful and powerful effectively: Aphrodite is an “irresistible” goddess who “plays games” (S. Ant. 800). Of course, the paradox is not so strange. Love can indeed be a joyous or agonizing human experience, while anyone who knows the gods of Greek literature, especially of Homer, is aware that they can behave like human beings at their worst while simultaneously wielding an extreme and violent power, especially in what they can do to any mortal who challenges their supremacy. The gods are both supremely powerful over humans yet also vulnerable to any perceived human disrespect and need us almost as much as we need them. Aphrodite’s love of intrigue in human lives and insistence on her own supremacy even at some cost to the humans in whose lives she must intervene shape her portrayal in three contemporary novels in which she (and her son as assistant) is a character: sometimes her darker side is emphasized and sometimes she is more of a “laughter-lover”. The best known of these is Phillips (2007), but equally interesting are the Aphrodites of Cobbold (2009) and of Weiss (1999). -

Book 10 – The Kingdom of the Dead Hades (1) God of the dead, ruler of the Underworld, which was accordingly known as Hades. In various adventures, Hades abducted the maiden Persephone, tricked the heroes Theseus and Peirithous and managed to get himself handcuffed by Sisyphus. The god Hades was a dread figure to the living, who were quite careful how they swore oaths in his name. To many people, simply to utter the word "Hades" was a frightening proposition. Realm of the dead, either underground or in the far West of the world known to the early Greeks - or both. Named for the god Hades, its ruler. Hades (2) As is not surprising, the ancient Greeks did not know what to expect after death. Notions of the afterlife were various and conflicting. Some thought that great heroes lucked out by traveling to the Elysian Fields, where they could hunt and feast and socialize in pleasant company for eternity, while commoners were consigned to a lifeless and boring abode in the Fields of Asphodel. First they'd drink the waters of Lethe, which caused them to lose all memory of their former lives and thus lack anything to talk about. In its earlier depictions, the underworld kingdom of Hades was such a dank and dark and moldering place that were it laid open to the heavens, the gods themselves would turn away in disgust. While gathering flowers in a field one day, Persephone was abducted to the Underworld by Hades, who arose in his chariot from a fissure in the ground. -

James S, Ruebel Iowa State University’ Ames Politics and Folktale in the Classical World Abstract The usurpation of myths and folktales for political purposes is a phenomenon that is well attested during classical antiquity. The preservation of heroic legends was probably motivated in part by social or political considerations, and the process continued into historical times. Our focus has now shifted from the question of historicity to the degree to which folktale has embellished history, and to what degree historical figures have exploited folktale and myth for real-life ends. The Peisistratid tyrants in Athens employed myths and religious symbols both in the initial stages of Peisistratus’ rise to power and in the maintenance of the dynasty over several decades. Alexander the Great made special efforts to associate him self with the hero Heracles; the emphasis on Heracles diminished as Alexander’s interests turned toward administration of a united Greek-Persian empire. Scipio Africanus was viewed by contemporary and later Roman authors as a Roman Alexander, a fact that is revealing about his personality but that complicates study of his own image-making efforts. Cato Censorius, on the other hand, created his own conservative Roman image by appealing to distinguished historical Romans and by emphasizing cardinal Roman virtues in his public oratory and literary efforts. Greek myths tend to generalize events, Roman myths make them con crete; Greek legends transcend time and space, Roman legends insist upon his toricity; Greek myths are largely related to Greek religion, Roman myths and folktales are not part of Roman religion, but part of Roman history, and should be examined first of all from that perspective. -
