POLLITZER, M.D. Division of Epidemiology, World Health Organization Manuscript received in April 1952 RODENTS AND LAGOMORPHA Reviewing in 1928 the then rather limited knowledge available concerning the occurrence and importance of plague in rodents other than the common rats and mice, Jorge 129 felt justified in drawing a clear-cut distinction between the pandemic type of plague introduced into human settlements and houses all over the world by the " domestic " rats and mice, and " peste selvatique ", which is dangerous for man only when he invades the remote endemic foci populated by wild rodents. Although Jorge's concept was accepted, some discussion arose regarding the appropriateness of the term " peste selvatique" or, as Stallybrass 282 and Wu Lien-teh 318 translated it, " selvatic plague ". It was pointed out by Meyer 194 that, on etymological grounds, the name " sylvatic plague " would be preferable, and this term was widely used until POzzO 238 and Hoekenga 105 doubted, and Girard 82 denied, its adequacy on the grounds that the word " sylvatic" implied that the rodents concerned lived in forests, whereas that was rarely the case. Girard therefore advocated the reversion to the expression "wild-rodent plague" which was used before the publication of Jorge's study-a proposal it has seemed advisable to accept for the present studies. Much more important than the difficulty of adopting an adequate nomenclature is that of distinguishing between rat and wild-rodent plague- a distinction which is no longer as clear-cut as Jorge was entitled to assume. -

RESULTS CHAPTER 3 A RESULTS INTRODUCTION, IDENTIFICATION AND MORPHOMETRY 3A.1 VEGETATION IN THE STUDY AREA The trees found in the habitats occupied by the owl vary with geographical locality and distribution range. In the study area, which is located on the Deccan plateau, I recorded following scrub vegetation in the areas occupied by the owl: Acacia nilotica, A. polyacantha, A. catechu, A. chundra, A. auriculiformes, A. tomentosa, Ziziphus sp., Holoptelea integrifolia, Artocarpus heterophyllus, Phyllanthus emblica and P. distichus, Bombax ceiba, Sterculia urens, Ailanthus excelsa, etc. Cropland is often interspersed with Azadirachta indica, Syzygium cumini, Mangifera indica, Tamarindus indica, Annona squamosa, A. reticulata, Achras sapota, Eucalyptus sp., Michelia champaca, Grewia tiliifolia, Aegel marmelos, Feronia elephantum, Melia azederach, Sapindus laurifolius. Cassia sp., Dalbergia latifolia, Memecylon umbellatum, Lagerstroemia sp. Millingtonia hortensis, Tectona grandis, Santalum album, Jatropha curcas, Bambusa arundinaceae, Dendrocalamus strictus, Asclepiadaceae sp. On coastal areas, Anacardium occidentale, Garcinia indica, Albizia lebbeck, Artocarpus heterophyllus, Cassurina litorea, Borassus flabellifer, Caryota sp. Pandanus tectorius, Cocos sp. etc. were seen. In the Indian Eagle Owl's Deccan plateau habitat, the xerophilous grasslands are composed of grasses belonging to species of Eragrosits, Aristida, Heteropogon, Apluda, Chloris, etc. Owls were seen frequenting suitable habitats with mesophilous grasses like Andropogon, Digitaria. Pennisetum, Themeda, Pancium, Setaria and to some extent hygrophilus grasses like Arundo, Hygrorhyza, Saccharum, Erianthus and Phragmites sp. In coastal areas the Indian Eagle-Owl was rarely seen on hilly coastlines near littoral vegetation like Rhizophora, Sonneratia, Avicena, sp. where the trees are sparse. On the coasts it sheltered under Spinifex squamosus, a gregarious sand binding grass or on Casuarina equisetifolia trees. -

One bird I long have dreamt to see was Mrs Hume´s Phesant (Syrmaticus humiae). Since my latest trip to Thailand and Cambodia in my opinion was very rewarding I once again contacted Tu (Rattapon Kaichid) and Jan (Pitchaya Janhom) in Thailand. -

This subfamily is larger than all mammal families except the Cricetidae, and is larger than all mammal orders except the bats and the remainder of the rodents. The Murinae are native to Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia. They are the only terrestrial placental mammals native to Australia. They have also been introduced to all continents except Antarctica, and are serious pest animals. This is particularly true in island communities where they have contributed to the endangerment and extinction of many native animals. Two prominent murine human commensals have become vital laboratory animals. The Brown Rat and House Mouse are both used as medical subjects and are among a handful of animals where the full genome has been sequenced. The murines have a distinctive molar pattern that involves three rows of cusps instead of two, the primitive pattern seen most frequently in muroid rodents. 1.1 FOSSILS Fossils ranges Middle Miocene – Recent. The first known appearance of the Murinae in the fossil record is about 14 million years ago with the fossil genus Antemus. Antemus is thought to derive directly from Potwarmus, which has a more primitive tooth pattern. Likewise, two genera, Progonomys and Karnimata are thought to derive directly from Antemus. Progonomys is thought to be the ancestor of Mus and relatives, while Karnimata is thought to lead to Rattus and relatives. -

Present study recorded a total of 59 species of rodents from the NE India out of 100 species reported from Indian Subcontinent. The list contains all the valid taxonomic names and their distribution in the states of NE India. Additionally, five species has been added to the checklist of rodents in India. The list provided 59 species belonging to 30 genera under 5 families of 7 subfamilies. Among them Muridae was recorded to be with highest number of species (31 species), followed by Sciuridae with 22 species, Cricetidae with three species, while Spalacidae and Hystricidae have recorded only two species in each group. -

These tiny vertebrates maintain a fairly high population levels in agricultural and household situation in the Indian subcontinent where rodent damage to standing crops ranges somewhere between 5-15 %. This figure may be much more if their devastating potential in indoor situation, like houses, godowns, ports etc. is included. Their role in spread of several deadly diseases is well known. During the recent plague epidemic in Gujarat, about 4000 persons suffered its infection with about 100 deaths. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research sponsored All India Coordinated Research Project on Rodent Control is engaged in studies on eco-biology and management of pest rodents.
