Bass Guitarists Of Note Discography Part of my mission as a musician is to legitimize the use of the bass guitar in jazz. The bass guitar is still a somewhat maligned instrument in certain circles of jazz. This was especially evident during the neo-conservative movement in jazz in the United States in the 1980s with the likes of Wynton Marsalis and others of his narrow-minded ilk. In my continuing studies and exploration on the use of the bass guitar in jazz it was necessary for me to do some intensive listening to hear the recorded road that had been paved before me, and to see the precedents that had been set. Part of the aim of this discography is to prove to naysayers that the bass guitar is just as viable as its cousin the double bass. Admittedly, this is a biased and incomplete discography of bass guitar playing. I needed to place some limitations on what could have been an unwieldy discography. I selected bass players whose exclusive primary artistic expression was through the bass guitar rather than the double bass. The discs listed here are those found in my personal collection, hence the entries are incomplete. Also, only official releases are listed; I’ve omitted bootlegs. The document is updated as I acquire the missing titles necessary to complete the collection. The loose and wide filtering criteria I applied for listing includes recordings where (1) the majority of the ensemble is acoustic and non-amplified thus accentuating the richness of the bass guitar sound; (2) the majority of the music is improvisational in nature; (3) the presence of mainstream straight-ahead based feels are evident and where the bass guitar takes on primarily a walking bass role; (4) the bass guitar is functioning in a non-traditional genre or non-mainstream context such as electro- acoustic, experimental, avant-garde, or world music. Players featured in this discography include (so far): Carles Benavent, Luke Bergman, Shanto Bhattacharya, Anders Christensen, Bob Cranshaw, Yuri Daniel, Franco Fontanarrosa, Juan García-Herreros, Matthew Garrison, Ronan Guilfoyle, Jerome Harris, Kevin Bruce Harris, Anthony Jackson, Todd Johnson, Tony Levin, Monk Montgomery, Jesse Murphy, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Toni Schiavano, Skuli Sverrisson, Steve Swallow, Stomu Takeishi, Chris Tarry, Chris Trinidad, Bill Urmson, Tiziano Zanotti, Wolfgang Zwiauer.
