irst impressions are often telling. My first impression of John Bouille was watching him run down the street in FSyracuse last June trying to catch up with a pack of friends. That wouldn’t be that odd in itself, yet in this case he had a cast on one foot and a flip-flop sandal on the other. Talking to John then and now, as this conversation proves, is a good hang – he has great mix of youthful exuberance about life and jazz tem- pered by the willingness to work hard. Here we check in with the Ragin’ Cajun at his office at WSHA, a station he’s quickly worked his way up the food chain at to become Program Direc- tor. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: Drive time DJ and Program Director – you’re a busy boy. John Bouille: Twenty hours a week on air is a lot, but that’s what keeps me sane. How did you end up in Raleigh? I moved here to open a jazz club, but it never happened. Before that I had a production company in New Orleans called Spyboy Productions, but I had to get out of New Orleans. I loved it there; it was a great place. Maybe when I’m older I’ll move back there, but at the time I needed to get out. WSHA program director John Bouille with saxophonist That’s where you picked up the jazz habit? David “Fathead” Newman.

I moved there when I was 21 and I didn’t know anything about the music. I was turned on to jazz first through the Grateful Dead – they would bring jazz guys like Ornette Coleman, David Murray and Branford Marsalis on stage at their concerts. I had no idea who these guys were at the time, but I really liked what they played. Then on my 21st Birthday, David Murray’s band Oc- tofunk opened for the Dead and they just blew me out of the water. I didn’t know much then, but decided that I’d try and learn everything I could. I vol- unteered at WWOZ and followed everyone around and listened to everything We like the idea they had to say. I turned on the station and the first thing I heard was Dr. John’s Ellington record, and so I figured it would be a good fit. I started out doing the 8-midnight shift. Then the after- noon drive guy got sick, so I took it over and went from there. Afternoon drive. That must have been a change what you had been doing. It was a big switch from a 25-minute Coltrane tune followed up with an 18- minute Albert Ayler one. Now I had to really hone my skills, but not really lose anything that I like about radio. It was a little difficult at first. I really had to listen to a lot of different styles of jazz, and even vocals, which aren’t my fa- vorite. While I DJed I also went from Production Director to Music Director to Underwriting and Sales and now Program Director. Do you do community outreach? we’re working on broadcasting the festival live and being the radio station for the festival. I never used to think about things like community outreach until I did sales and underwriting. As much as it’s good to have support from a foot doctor, I’d much rather be in partnership with a jazz club or festival. It’s a win win situation for both of us. Do you feature a lot of releases in your rotation? Every Monday I do a show called New Release Monday and it’s all new releas- I say this all the es. Any other special shows during the week? “ On Thursdays I do a show called Throwback Thursdays where we do all vinyl for four hours. You’ve still got vinyl in the studio? We do. And people are calling us all the time to give us their old vinyl collec- tions if we come pick it up. So we come and get them. We have some amaz- ing amazing stuff that hasn’t made it CD yet. That’s one of favorite shows. I sit back with the records and have at it, just like they did in the old days. It’s a lot harder to put a show together but I don’t mind. You don’t have playlists. Why Not? We like the idea of letting the announcer come in and create the program based on what they are feeling or what they want to play. A playlist sends you closer to that commercial world. When I was in school I would go visit stations and the DJ would talk to us and then pause for a second and turn on the mic to do the announcement. It’s all computerized and I think that it takes away from what has been an art form for such a long time. True. Then on Fridays we do Funk Fridays, which is a mix of acid jazz, funk jazz, dance music and chill. It’s got a little bit of everything. It’s our most successful show during pledge drive and it really grabs a younger audience. Is that something you’re committed to? Definitely. I say this all the time: If you only have old listeners, you’re in trou- ble when they die. I’ll play a Galactic song like “Hamp’s Hump,” which actual-

ly a song by and Dr. Lonnie Smith. I like pointing that out so the audience can go and do their research on Lou Donaldson or Lonnie Smith. I like that because that’s what the DJs did for me when I was in New Orleans. Do you talk to folks in New Orleans? Yeah I talk to them and they say things are going well, but then they say that nothing has really been done yet. That’s scary. You can’t just replace the archi- tecture of the 9th Ward. It won’t be the same if they put $40,000 houses up. Being in the music business I went into the 9th Ward, but there were a lot of people who were wealthy and lived in Uptown and they never really experi- enced it. It’s hard. I haven’t been back there in a long time and I had a ticket to go to a wedding that was set for the week that Katrina hit and obviously she cancelled the wedding. New Orleans will always be a place that is close to my heart. It was hard at first when I moved to Raleigh because there weren’t any jazz freaks around. Then I came to this station and found some. The most-added CD this week was Bob Mintzer’s Old School: New Lessons (MCG Jazz), a live big-band recording including Mintzer’s “regular” group, Yellowjackets, and vocal- ist Kurt Elling. The disc was added on 30 sta- tions. The Ultimate Adventure (Stretch) from Chick Corea adds 156 spins; it’s No. 1 a second week. Cyrus Chestnut had the week’s highest de- but; his first CD for Telarc, Genuine Chestnut, hit the chart at No. 11.
