JazzWeek Volume 2 Number 14 jazzweek.com • Feb. 27, 2006 JazzWeek 3 News Legendary Conguero Ray Barretto Passes at 76 HACKENSACK, N.J. – Legendary conguero and bandleader Ray Barret- to died at the Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, N.J. at 5 a.m., Feb. 17, with his wife and two sons by his bedside.. He was 76. Barre- to had been hospitalized after under- going bypass surgery in January and had been suffering from pneumonia, said George Rivera, a friend and fam- ily spokesman. Barretto was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1929 and grew up lis- tening to the music of Puerto Rico and the swing bands of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman.
