Building Future Forests: Politics, Ecology, and the Co-Production of Landscape in Southeastern Ohio Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Justine Marie Law, B.S. Graduate Program in Geography Ohio State University 2010 Thesis Committee: Kendra McSweeney, Advisor Becky Mansfield Joel Wainwright Copyright by Justine Marie Law 2010 Abstract Southeastern Ohio, officially designated a part of Appalachia, was heavily dependent on coal mining from the mid-1800s until the 1970s. But despite the region’s history of resource extraction, its forest has largely returned. Interestingly, almost all of this reforestation occurred on private land owned by thousands of individuals. These private forest owners are often viewed as inadequate stewards of the land, and interest groups are constantly pushing governance strategies that would remake the forest to suit their own agendas. Thus, a struggle over this newly-mature forest, its resources, and its future has begun. Here I attempt first to show how local forests owners are actually knowledgeable, active, economically-savvy, and organized scientists navigating a complicated, power-laden space filled with stereotypes and competing interests. Second, I discuss the connections between soils, trees, nutrients, animals, interest groups, landowners, and economies on this landscape and argue that ecological and human processes are knotted too tightly together to ever be untangled. Finally, through linking human and non-human processes, I explore the possibilities of how southeast Ohio's forests could look years from now. Many of these possibilities are so drastically dissimilar from both each other and today's forest that they would certainly have significant repercussions on local landscapes, ecosystems, and livelihoods.

Narrator: In the great colony of North Carolina about the year 1735, the pioneers of the new world began to move westward in search of a new home—fertile lands and streams; a place in which they could lift their hearts and minds to Almighty God, according to the dictates of their conscience. A place where they might enjoy the fruits of their labors. Among these pioneers was a group of Scotch-Irish Presbyterians who travelled down the "Great Road" from Philadelphia through Virginia until they came to the beautiful rolling land between the Yadkin and Catawba Rivers. Turning westward from the Yadkin this group, known as able- bodied, hardy, famous marksmen, strangers to fear, and lovers of freedom and good land, continued on their way beyond the first, second and third creeks to the fourth creek after which their settlement was named.

  • 40Th Commencement Exercises
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences “Learning to Care for Those in Harm’s Way” 40th Commencement Exercises Saturday, the Eighteenth of May, Two Thousand and Nineteen The Mace he mace was a weapon of war originating with the loaded club and stone hammer of Tprimitive man. Although it continued to be used as a weapon through the Middle Ages, during this period it also became symbolic as an ornament representing power. Sergeants-at-Arms, who were guards of kings and other high officials, carried a mace to protect their monarch during processions. By the 14th century, the mace had become more ceremonial in use and was decorated with jewels and precious metals, losing its war-club appearance. Three hundred years later, the mace was used solely as a symbol of authority. The mace is used during sessions of legislative assemblies such as the U.S. House of Representatives, where it is placed to the right of the Speaker. More frequently, maces are seen at university commencements and convocations, exemplifying knowledge as power. The USU mace was a glorious gift from the Honorable Sam Nixon, MD, past chairman of the Board of Regents, and his wife, Elizabeth. The mace was used for the first time at the 1995 commencement ceremony. It is handcrafted in sterling silver and carries the seal of the university along with the emblems of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Public Health Service. The university seal and service emblems are superimposed on the earth’s globe to symbolize the worldwide mission of the university and its graduates.
