Brandt Cara Kiernan Fallon Forever Young: The Social Transformation of Aging in America Since 1900 Abstract Between 1900 and 2000, life expectancy in the United States increased by three decades—from 47 to 77—a greater increase in one century than in the entire previous history of humankind. With it, the population over sixty-five increased from four to twelve percent of the United States population, and those over eighty-five became the fastest-growing demographic group. While growing old has become increasingly common, the processes of aging have not become welcomed or accepted. -

Glossary Glossary Albedo A measure of an object’s reflectivity. A pure white reflecting surface has an albedo of 1.0 (100%). A pitch-black, nonreflecting surface has an albedo of 0.0. The Moon is a fairly dark object with a combined albedo of 0.07 (reflecting 7% of the sunlight that falls upon it). The albedo range of the lunar maria is between 0.05 and 0.08. The brighter highlands have an albedo range from 0.09 to 0.15. Anorthosite Rocks rich in the mineral feldspar, making up much of the Moon’s bright highland regions. Aperture The diameter of a telescope’s objective lens or primary mirror. Apogee The point in the Moon’s orbit where it is furthest from the Earth. At apogee, the Moon can reach a maximum distance of 406,700 km from the Earth. Apollo The manned lunar program of the United States. Between July 1969 and December 1972, six Apollo missions landed on the Moon, allowing a total of 12 astronauts to explore its surface. Asteroid A minor planet. A large solid body of rock in orbit around the Sun. Banded crater A crater that displays dusky linear tracts on its inner walls and/or floor. 250 Basalt A dark, fine-grained volcanic rock, low in silicon, with a low viscosity. Basaltic material fills many of the Moon’s major basins, especially on the near side. Glossary Basin A very large circular impact structure (usually comprising multiple concentric rings) that usually displays some degree of flooding with lava. The largest and most conspicuous lava- flooded basins on the Moon are found on the near side, and most are filled to their outer edges with mare basalts. -

Cantor on Infinity in Nature, Number, and the Divine Mind Anne Newstead Abstract. The mathematician Georg Cantor strongly believed in the existence of actually infinite numbers and sets. Cantor’s “actualism” went against the Aristote- lian tradition in metaphysics and mathematics. Under the pressures to defend his theory, his metaphysics changed from Spinozistic monism to Leibnizian volunta- rist dualism. The factor motivating this change was two-fold: the desire to avoid antinomies associated with the notion of a universal collection and the desire to avoid the heresy of necessitarian pantheism. We document the changes in Can- tor’s thought with reference to his main philosophical-mathematical treatise, the Grundlagen (1883) as well as with reference to his article, “Über die verschiedenen Standpunkte in bezug auf das aktuelle Unendliche” (“Concerning Various Perspec- tives on the Actual Infinite”) (1885). I. he Philosophical Reception of Cantor’s Ideas. Georg Cantor’s dis- covery of transfinite numbers was revolutionary. Bertrand Russell Tdescribed it thus: The mathematical theory of infinity may almost be said to begin with Cantor. The infinitesimal Calculus, though it cannot wholly dispense with infinity, has as few dealings with it as possible, and contrives to hide it away before facing the world Cantor has abandoned this cowardly policy, and has brought the skeleton out of its cupboard. He has been emboldened on this course by denying that it is a skeleton. CHAPTER 6 JAMES AND WAINWRIGHT BELLHOUSE LTD. COTTON SPINNERS The business venture started by David Bellhouse (1764 – 1840) that seems least related to the rest is cotton spinning. This business was passed to his sons, James (1796 – 1874) and Wainwright Bellhouse (1800 – 1885), about a decade before the father’s death. By 1833, David Bellhouse had ceased to list himself as a cotton spinner in the Manchester directories. Wain- wright Bellhouse first appeared in the Manchester directories in 1832 with his occupation given as cotton spinner; James Bellhouse followed in 1836. The firm was know as Messrs. Bellhouse by 18311 and as James and Wainwright (J. & W.) Bellhouse by 1833.2 Advertisement for the Medlock New Mill3 129 The traditional date for the start of J. & W. Bellhouse is 1792.4 However, this is the year in which David Bellhouse senior took up residence in Faulkner Street and began to work inde- pendently as a joiner and builder, not the year the spinning business started. David Bellhouse built the original mill, associated with the firm known as the Medlock New Mill, in 1806 and so the beginning of the firm should be dated from that year. The mill was just outside the boundary of the Township of Manchester as defined in 1800.5 It was bounded by the Medlock River and by Pritchard, York and Charles Streets in Chorlton on Medlock or Chorlton Row. The mill was situated directly across the Medlock River from all the other Bellhouse enterprises, which were in Hunt or Whitworth Street. David Bellhouse senior built a second mill at this location in 1836.6 Sometime before 1851 a third mill was added. -

Para iniciar, vale ressaltar três nomes que aparecem em destaque nas primeiras páginas do livro, e que possuem extrema relevância para o movimento internacional da escrita da História da Matemática: International Commission on the History of Mathematics, a Comissão International de História da Matemática, que deu o suporte científico para a edição do livro; Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, o Instituto de Pesquisa em Matemática de Oberwolfach, ao qual o livro é dedicado. O terceiro nome é de uma pessoa, Kenneth O. May, em cuja memória o livro também é dedicado. Um pouco da história sobre estas três autoridades da movimento internacional de pesquisa em História da Matemática representa um importante subsídio para a apresentação do livro Writing the History of Mathematics: Ist Historical Development. Hays, Jr. - Worth, Illinois, USA December 18, 2018 02:04-02:42, 02:58-03:10 UT, 15 cm refl, 170x, seeing 7-9/10, transparence 6/6. I observed the group of craters just west of Plato on the evening of Dec. 17/18, 2018. Plato A is the largest crater in this sketch. Three other craters form nearly a straight line to the west. From east to west, these are Plato M, Y and B. These four craters probably do not make a related chain since they differ considerably in appearance. Plato A has an irregular east rim (shadowed here) that appears to merge into an old ring. A small peak is near this old ring. Plato A also had a detached strip of internal shadow and substantial exterior shadow at this time. Plato M and Y look similar, but M seems deeper than Y. Plato M also had much exterior shadow. Plato B is the second largest crater depicted here, but it is shallower than its neighbors. Plato BA is the small crater northwest of Plato Y, and a small peak is farther to the northwest. A short ridge is just north of Plato Y. A large peak is northeast of Plato M, and Plato S is the crater far- ther northeast. -

While there are many inexpensive books offered there are also a few special pieces, highlighted with the extraordinary LUBIENIECKI, this copy being entirely handcolored in a contemporary hand. Among the books are the mathematic libraries of Dr. Harold Levine of Stanford University and Father Barnabas Hughes of the Franciscan order in California. Additional material is offered from the libraries of David Lindberg and L. Pearce Williams. Normally I highlight the books being offered, but today’s bookselling world is changing rapidly. Many books are only sold on-line and thus many retailers have become abscent from city streets. If they stay in the trade, they deal on-line. I have come from a tradition of old style bookselling and hope to continue binging fine books available at reasonable prices as I have in the past.
