Raoul Mörchen Konzerthäuser in Deutschland >> Konzerthaus – Was ist das? Was ein Opernhaus ist, ist leicht gesagt. Ein Opernhaus ist ein Haus, in dem Opern gespielt werden. In Opern- häusern werden gemeinhin die zur Aufführung kommenden Opern auch selbst produziert, und zwar ganz oder zum Teil mit eigenem Personal, mit einem eigenen Ensemble, mit einem eigenen Orchester, auf jeden Fall werden die Opern programmiert von einem eigenen Betrieb, einer eigenen Verwaltung, einer eigenen Dramaturgie und einer künstlerischen Leitung. Ein Opernhaus ist somit ein spezifischer Gebäudetypus – mit Auditorium, Bühne, Bühnenmaschinerie, heute auch mit Orchestergraben – und eine kulturelle Institution, die diesen Gebäudetypus entsprechend bespielt. Was ein Konzerthaus ist, lässt sich dagegen nicht so leicht sagen. Für Konzerte braucht es kein eigenes Haus – ein Saal tut’s eigentlich auch. Genau genommen spielt sogar die meiste Musik in Deutschland, auch die klas- sische, nicht in Konzerthäusern, sondern in Konzertsälen. Und selbst der Konzertsaal ist bei näherem Hinblick weder architektonisch noch soziologisch eine so fest greifbare Entität wie das Opernhaus: Was gestern Abend noch Konzertsaal war, kann vielerorts morgen früh schon leergeräumt werden für einen Kongress oder eine Tagung, für eine Firmenpräsentation oder gar für einen Trödelmarkt. Beinahe jede mittelgroße und große deutsche Stadt verfügt über solche Säle, die als Mehrzweckhallen mehr oder minder oft Aufführungsstätte für Konzerte sind. Ihre Eignung dafür stellt diese beliebte Mischnutzung nicht von vornherein in Frage: Säle wie die alte Duisburger Mercatorhalle oder die Beethovenhalle in Bonn haben sich Jahrzehnte lang als Konzertort bewährt und sind von Musikern und dem Publikum angenommen, manchmal sogar liebgewonnen worden. Historisch betrachtet hat in solchen Mehrzwecksälen das öffentliche Konzert sogar seinen Ursprung genom- men: Sowohl in England, wo sich das bürgerliche Konzertwesen in einer stark merkantil ausgerichteten Ge- sellschaft bereits im frühen 18. -

The picture, taken in 2015, shows the barricade that cut a road once connect- ing two central neighborhoods. It was the ultimate symbol of closure. What used to connect people—buses that once took Aleppians from their homes to their jobs—was turned into a towering wall to hold apart two sides committed to nothing less than the extinction of the other. The wall of buses was a haunting image of civil war and the terrible price civilians have paid. For Manaf Halbouni, a German-Syrian artist, the buses represented the desire for dignity, understanding and community that Syrians sought. To remind people of the need for tolerance and discussion, he installed a replica of the barricade in Dresden’s most hallowed public space, the Neumarkt. Aleppo and Dresden, two cities that have become by-words for de- struction and the terrible price of war, are now linked by a challenging and thought-provoking work of art. To those unaware of Dresden’s deeply conflicted identity, it may be surprising that the installation, which Halbouni called Monument, has sparked large-scale protests and opposition. -

The 1963 Berlin Philharmonie – a Breakthrough Architectural Vision
PRZEGLĄD ZACHODNI I, 2017 BEATA KORNATOWSKA Poznań THE 1963 BERLIN PHILHARMONIE – A BREAKTHROUGH ARCHITECTURAL VISION „I’m convinced that we need (…) an approach that would lead to an interpretation of the far-reaching changes that are happening right in front of us by the means of expression available to modern architecture.1 Walter Gropius The Berlin Philharmonie building opened in October of 1963 and designed by Hans Scharoun has become one of the symbols of both the city and European musical life. Its character and story are inextricably linked with the history of post-war Berlin. Construction was begun thanks to the determination and un- stinting efforts of a citizens initiative – the Friends of the Berliner Philharmo- nie (Gesellschaft der Freunde der Berliner Philharmonie). The competition for a new home for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (Berliner Philharmonisches Orchester) was won by Hans Scharoun whose design was brave and innovative, tailored to a young republic and democratic society. The path to turn the design into reality, however, was anything but easy. Several years were taken up with political maneuvering, debate on issues such as the optimal location, financing and the suitability of the design which brought into question the traditions of concert halls including the old Philharmonie which was destroyed during bomb- ing raids in January 1944. A little over a year after the beginning of construction the Berlin Wall appeared next to it. Thus, instead of being in the heart of the city, as had been planned, with easy access for residents of the Eastern sector, the Philharmonie found itself on the outskirts of West Berlin in the close vicinity of a symbol of the division of the city and the world.
