  • Benjamin Grosvenor, Piano
BENJAMIN GROSVENOR, PIANO a formidable technician and a thoughtful, coolly assured interpreter - Allan Kozinn, New York Times, ...a skill and talent not heard since Kissins teenage Russian debut - Bryce Morrison, Gramophone Magazine British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor is internationally recognized for his electrifying performances and penetrating interpretations. An exquisite technique and ingenious flair for tonal colour are the hallmarks which make Benjamin Grosvenor one of the most sought-after young pianists in the world. His virtuosic command over the most strenuous technical complexities never compromises the formidable depth and intelligence of his interpretations. Described by some as a Golden Age pianist (American Record Guide) and one almost from another age (The Times), Benjamin is renowned for his distinctive sound, described as poetic and gently ironic, brilliant yet clear-minded, intelligent but not without humour, all translated through a beautifully clear and singing touch (The Independent). Benjamin first came to prominence as the outstanding winner of the Keyboard Final of the 2004 BBC Young Musician Competition at the age of eleven. Since then, he has become an internationally regarded pianist performing with orchestras including the London Philharmonic, RAI Torino, New York Philharmonic, Philharmonia, Tokyo Symphony, and in venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, Barbican Centre, Singapores Victoria Hall, The Frick Collection and Carnegie Hall (at the age of thirteen). Benjamin has worked with numerous esteemed conductors including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Jií Blohlávek, Semyon Bychkov and Vladimir Jurowski. At just nineteen, Benjamin performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra on the First Night of the 2011 BBC Proms to a sold-out Royal Albert Hall.

No matter what side of the business you may be on— producing, selling, distributing, even buying recordings— there is no longer a “standard operating procedure.” Hence the title of this Special Report, designed as a guide to the abundance of recording and distribution options that seem to be cropping up almost daily thanks to technology’s relentless march forward. And as each new delivery CONTENTS option takes hold—CD, download, streaming, app, flash drive, you name it—it exponentionally accelerates the next. 2 Introduction At the other end of the spectrum sits the artist, overwhelmed with choices: 4 The Distribution Maze: anybody can (and does) make a recording these days, but if an artist is not signed Bring a Compass: Part I with a record label, or doesn’t have the resources to make a vanity recording, is there still a way? As Phil Sommerich points out in his excellent overview of “The 8 The Distribution Maze: Distribution Maze,” Part I and Part II, yes, there is a way, or rather, ways. But which Bring a Compass: Part II one is the right one? Sommerich lets us in on a few of the major players, explains 11 Five Minutes, Five Questions how they each work, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. with Three Top Label Execs In “The Musical America Recording Surveys,” we confirmed that our readers are both consumers and makers of recordings.

From Rob Cowan: “Celebrating what would have been André Previn’s 90th on Cowan’s Classics brings back precious memories of a breakfast interview in Vienna back in 1997, talking to the great man about Ravel, Richard Strauss, Vaughan Williams, Mozart and film music. I remember his suave manner, caustic wit and obvious enthusiasm for the music he loved most. I’ve a terrific selection planned, ranging from Vaughan Williams evoking Westminster at night, to something sleek and sweet by Previn himself, Satie’s restful Gymnopedie No. 1 and Rachmaninov’s most famous piano concerto with Vladimir Ashkenazy as soloist. Here’s hoping that on Classic FM, I play all the right pieces in the right order...” Classic FM is available across the UK on 100-102 FM, DAB Digital radio anD TV, the Classic FM app, at ClassicFM.com and on the Global Player. 1 WEEK 15 SATURDAY 6TH APRIL 7am to 10am: ALAN TITCHMARSH Join Alan for his Great British Discovery and Gardening Tip after 8am, followed by a very special Classic FM Hall of Fame Hour at 9am. • London Philharmonic Orchestra Announces Karina Canellakis As Principal Guest Conductor from 2020/21 Season
LONDON PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA ANNOUNCES KARINA CANELLAKIS AS PRINCIPAL GUEST CONDUCTOR FROM 2020/21 SEASON The London Philharmonic Orchestra today announces the appointment of American conductor Karina Canellakis as its new Principal Guest Conductor from September 2020. One of the most dynamic and exciting conductors of our time, Karina Canellakis made an immediate impact on the players of the LPO when she made her debut with them in October 2018 in a concert of Sibelius, Dvořák and Bartók at the Royal Festival Hall. Currently Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic and Principal Guest Conductor of the Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Canellakis’s international reputation has quickly grown since winning the Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award in 2016. Canellakis began her career as a violinist, graduating from the Curtis Institute of Music, performing frequently as soloist and chamber musician, and playing for two years in the Berlin Philharmonic as a member of their Orchester-Akademie. She then spent a number of years playing regularly in the Chicago Symphony and appearing as Guest Leader of various orchestras including the Bergen Philharmonic. Having been inspired to focus more seriously on conducting, she decided to study at Juilliard, and began conducting professionally in 2013, initially with the International Contemporary Ensemble in New York. She made her European conducting debut in 2015 and over the last few seasons has made hugely successful debuts with leading orchestras around the world that have resulted in instant re-invitations and lasting relationships. Timothy Walker, Chief Executive & Artistic Director of the LPO, says: ‘There are very few conductors who instantly impress players by their command of a score, their insights and their intellectual rigour.

From the start of the Baroque Period a hundred years earlier, skilled craftsmen like Gasparo da Salò advanced string instrument building technique until it reached its apex with the instruments of Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri. The burgeoning music publishing industry also inspired composers to write pieces that would stand out and establish their international reputations.
