  • Antinori's Super Tuscans: Tignanello & Solaia
ROBERSON WINE FINE WINE TASTINGS ANTINORI’S SUPER TUSCANS: TIGNANELLO & SOLAIA Thursday 28th April 2011 ANTINORI’S SUPER TUSCANS THE ESTATE The family The Antinori family are well entrenched as part of Tuscan wine royalty, their involvement in the trade dating back to 1385 when Giovanni di Pierso Antinori first joined the winemakers’ guild. For many years, as was the case with other famous wine families like the Frescobaldis and Ricasolis, they were involved in the buying and selling of wine estates as well as having interests in many other trades. In 1506 Nicolo Antinori purchased the beautiful palazzo in Florence which, to this day, remains the HQ of today’s Marchese Piero Antinori and his sprawling wine empire which encompasses 24 estates in 6 different countries. For hundreds of years after the Marchese and his descendents had moved in to the palazzo, the wines of the Antinori family established a reputation as an excellent source for Tuscan wines and they began accumulating land in some of the region’s most famed viticultural areas - in particular Chianti Classico. By 1863, the family business was doing well enough that the ‘Fattoria dei Marchesi Lodovico e Piero Antinori’ was formed in order to fully professionalise what they were doing and with the aim of “establishing some order among the various winegrowing activities developed by the previous generations of Antinoris since the XIV century.”. Before long, this new company had become one of the star performers and the family’s influence continued to grow as the wines were exported throughout the world. This ambassadorial role was continued by today’s Marchese, Piero, who is widely heralded as the most important man in Tuscan wine thanks to his wide reaching efforts to improve the quality and reputation of Tuscan wines.

  • 2016 Villa Antinori Rosso
www.antinori.it TOSCANA IGT 2016 Villa Antinori Rosso VINTAGE NOTES • The 2016 vintage began with a mild winter and abundant rainfall. Significant reserves of ground water accumulated in the soil for the warmer months to come. • Summer was warm but was not marked by excessive peaks in temperature. The warm days and cool nights assisted in a balanced growth and development of the grapes. • Harvest began during the first week of September and continued through the end of the month. VINEYARD NOTES • First introduced in 1928 by Niccolò Antinori, Piero Antinori’s father, as the first Chianti specifically produced to improve with age. • All the grapes in Villa Antinori Rosso come exclusively from Antinori’s top estate-owned vineyards. • The Sangiovese was grown in Chianti Classico and Montalcino terroirs; Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in Bolgheri; and Syrah in Cortona. HISTORY NOTES • With the 2001 vintage, Villa Antinori became an IGT Toscana wine, allowing Antinori to have complete control of the winemaking process. • The design of the label has remained unaltered since 1928 with only the very slightest modifications in 1990 and in 2001. WINEMAKING NOTES • The grapes were destemmed and given a soft pressing. Maceration took place in stainless steel tanks and lasted 8-12 days. • The wine completed fermentation at differing temperatures depending on the varietal. • Malolactic fermentation took place in November. A portion was transferred to French, ALCOHOL: 13.5% American and Hungarian oak barriques. BLEND: TASTING NOTES Principally Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, An intense garnet red in color, Villa Antinori Rosso offers a complex nose of plums and red berry Merlot and Syrah fruit and mint.

  • 2018 Castello Della Sala Bramito Chardonnay
www.antinori.it UMBRIA IGT 2018 Castello della Sala Bramito Chardonnay VINTAGE NOTES • The 2018 vintage was cool with frequent rainfall that was optimal for the vines’ development. January weather was mild with little rain. • Cold temperatures and snow marked the end of February and beginning of March, followed by rain that helped replenish groundwater reserves. • Hot weather set in mid-July throughout all of August, which combined with excellent temperature fluctuations between day and night, promoted slow regular berry ripening. • Grapes were healthy, at peak maturity with an optimal aromatic profile and excellent freshness. Harvesting began at the end of August. VINEYARD NOTES • Castello della Sala Chardonnay was first produced with the 1994 vintage and is Marchesi Antinori’s second Chardonnay. • The grapes come from vineyards planted 656 to 1,312 feet above sea-level, in Pliocene sedimentary soils rich in marine fossils with some clay. • Castello della Sala is a 14th century castle located 10 miles from the town of Orvieto, purchased by the Antinori family in 1940. WINEMAKING NOTES • The grapes were picked during the night and immediately chilled to maintain varietal character. • After a few hours of skin contact, the juice was transferred into part French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. • After alcoholic fermentation and partial malolactic fermentation took place, the wine was aged in oak for 5 months. TASTING NOTES BLEND: This white wine is bright yellow in color with greenish highlights. Complex and fresh on the 100% Chardonnay nose, the wine offers delicate aromas of tropical fruit, pineapple and citrus that blend with sensations of hazelnut butter and vanilla.

  • 2016 Villa Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva
www.antinori.it CHIANTI CLASSICO DOCG RISERVA 2016 Villa Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva VINTAGE NOTES • Autumn and winter had mild temperatures and little rainfall. The spring began with fine weather, which led to an early bud break of ten days. • May and June saw frequent rainstorms and cool temperatures, factors which did not influence in any significant way the phases of flowering and bud set. • The summer was warm and dry without peak temperatures through the end of August, excellent conditions for vegetative growth and grape production. • The harvest period was normal, with occasional rain and periods of sunshine. The harvest began during the last ten days of September and finished around October 10th. VINEYARD NOTES • The first vintage of Villa Rosso Chianti Classico Riserva was made in 1928. • With the 2010 vintage, Marchesi Antinori added Villa Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva to the Villa Antinori Toscana IGT Rosso and Bianco. • The wine is fermented and aged at the new Antinori nel Chianti Classico Cellars in Bargino, in the Chianti Classico area. WINEMAKING NOTES • After the grapes were destemmed and given a light pressing, the skins went into temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for a week. • Fermentation began rapidly, and the period of skin contact lasted approximately 15 days with frequent pump-overs to extract soft, ripe tannins. • The wine was aged in French and Hungarian oak barrels, where it completed malolactic fermentation. TASTING NOTES An intense ruby red in color, this red wine opens with aromas of red fruit and notes of balsamic ALCOHOL: 13.5% and spice. The palate is enveloping with soft tannins and velvety in texture.
