  • Tenuta Tignanello
Tenuta Tignanello Tignanello 2008 Vintage • A mild winter with little rainfall caused budbreak to occur earlier than normal, accelerating other stages of vine development. • Spring was characterized by heavy rainfall slowing the growth on the early buds. The warmer summer months continued growth development leading into fall. • The early fall was characterized by hot and sunny days with cool nights, creating temperature fluctuations ideal for ripening Sangiovese. • The optimal climatic conditions in mid-September and the first week of October allowed for an unhurried, careful selection of grape bunches. Vineyard Histor y • The original Super Tuscan, Tignanello is produced exclusively from a 116-acre vineyard site at Antinori’s Tignanello Estate. • The vineyards are southwest facing, with calcareous rocky-marl and limestone soils with tufaceous elements, locally called alberese rocks. They are planted between 1,150 and 1,312 feet above sea level. Origin Estate Grown, • Soils are free draining and produce intensely flavorful grapes and low yields— Toscana IGT around 3 tons per acre or less. Blend 80% Sangiovese • Tignanello was the first Sangiovese to be aged in small oak barrels, the first Italian red wine in modern times to use a non-traditional grape variety, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet, in the blend and among the first Italian red wines made in Chianti 5% Cabernet Franc with no white grapes. Alcohol 13.5% • Tignanello was first vinified as a single-vineyard Chianti Classico wine in 1970. • With the 1971 vintage, the wine was named Tignanello, and in 1975, Tasting Notes white grapes were eliminated from the vineyard and the blend.

EUROPEAN COMMISSION DIRECTORATE-GENERAL FOR ENERGY DIRECTORATE D - Nuclear Safety and Fuel Cycle Radiation Protection Main Conclusions of the Commission’s Article 35 verification NATIONAL MONITORING NETWORK FOR ENVIRONMENTAL RADIOACTIVITY Central and Southern Italy Campania, Molise, Abruzzo, Marche, Umbria and Lazio DISCHARGE AND ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING Garigliano NPP Date: 12 to 17 September 2011 Verification team: Mr C. Gitzinger (team leader) Mr E. Henrich Mr. E. Hrnecek Mr. A. Ryan Reference: IT-11/06 INTRODUCTION Article 35 of the Euratom Treaty requires that each Member State shall establish facilities necessary to carry out continuous monitoring of the levels of radioactivity in air, water and soil and to ensure compliance with the basic safety standards (1). Article 35 also gives the European Commission (EC) the right of access to such facilities in order that it may verify their operation and efficiency. For the EC, the Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER) and in particular its Radiation Protection Unit (at the time of the visit ENER.D.4, now ENER.D.3) is responsible for undertaking these verifications. The main purpose of verifications performed under Article 35 of the Euratom Treaty is to provide an independent assessment of the adequacy of monitoring facilities for: - Liquid and airborne discharges of radioactivity into the environment by a site (and control thereof). - Levels of environmental radioactivity at the site perimeter and in the marine, terrestrial and aquatic environment around the site, for all relevant pathways. - Levels of environmental radioactivity on the territory of the Member State. Taking into account previous bilateral protocols, a Commission Communication has been published in the Official Journal on 4 July 2006 with a view to define some practical arrangements for the conduct of Article 35 verification visits in Member States.

  • Bibi Graetz Wines, the Name Is Very Evocative, “Casa-Matta”: the “Crazy-House”, Is Our Bright and Approachable Version of White Tuscan Blend
BI BI GRAETZ CASAMATTA Bianco 2016 The “Crazy-House” Like most of Bibi Graetz wines, the name is very evocative, “Casa-Matta”: the “Crazy-House”, is our bright and approachable version of white Tuscan blend. The Vermentino brings freshness, the Moscato Bianco elevate the aromatics and Trebbiano increase the balance and the harmony of the blend. Winemaker’s Tasting Notes Vermentino 60%, Trebbiano 30%, Moscato Bianco 10% “When I drink Casamatta Bianco I’m immediately projected on the Tuscan coast. This is a wine that reflects the soil, the sun and the perfumes of Maremma. The first impression is the floral notes of Moscato, orange and peach flowers, then in the palate you have the citrus of the Vermentino, pear and exotic fruits” Bibi Graetz Vintage 2016: the growing season After a great 2015, the expectation of having another sensational vintage were very low, usually it’s hard to have 2 great vintages one after the other. What we realized with the 2016 is that this is not the case. This vintage is at the same level of 2015 and someone says it’s even better! Very cold winter, with some touches of snow guaranteed, with a mild and sunny spring, perfect conditions for the develop of the plants. The summer was a bit warmer then 2015 with only few days of rain in the beginning of August and the harvest period was fully insolated and anticipated to the 12th of September. Vinification and Ageing Casamatta Bianco is produced from the vineyards of Capalbio, south of Tuscany in Maremma. The grapes are hand-picked and fermented in stainless steel tanks, destammed and softpressed with dry ice.

  • Antinori's Super Tuscans: Tignanello & Solaia
ROBERSON WINE FINE WINE TASTINGS ANTINORI’S SUPER TUSCANS: TIGNANELLO & SOLAIA Thursday 28th April 2011 ANTINORI’S SUPER TUSCANS THE ESTATE The family The Antinori family are well entrenched as part of Tuscan wine royalty, their involvement in the trade dating back to 1385 when Giovanni di Pierso Antinori first joined the winemakers’ guild. For many years, as was the case with other famous wine families like the Frescobaldis and Ricasolis, they were involved in the buying and selling of wine estates as well as having interests in many other trades. In 1506 Nicolo Antinori purchased the beautiful palazzo in Florence which, to this day, remains the HQ of today’s Marchese Piero Antinori and his sprawling wine empire which encompasses 24 estates in 6 different countries. For hundreds of years after the Marchese and his descendents had moved in to the palazzo, the wines of the Antinori family established a reputation as an excellent source for Tuscan wines and they began accumulating land in some of the region’s most famed viticultural areas - in particular Chianti Classico. By 1863, the family business was doing well enough that the ‘Fattoria dei Marchesi Lodovico e Piero Antinori’ was formed in order to fully professionalise what they were doing and with the aim of “establishing some order among the various winegrowing activities developed by the previous generations of Antinoris since the XIV century.”. Before long, this new company had become one of the star performers and the family’s influence continued to grow as the wines were exported throughout the world. This ambassadorial role was continued by today’s Marchese, Piero, who is widely heralded as the most important man in Tuscan wine thanks to his wide reaching efforts to improve the quality and reputation of Tuscan wines.

  • View from the Cellar
VIEW FROM THE CELLAR Giornata Another new winery to me this time around was Giornata, based in Paso Robles, who is specializing in Italian varietals and also making simply stellar wines. Giornata is the brainchild of Brian and Stefanie Terrizzi, who have made the pilgrimage from more standard 72 California varietals at their various previous positions to passionate and very gifted producers of truly Italian-styled wines from top vineyards in California’s Central Coast. This is not something that I had ever thought about as overly promising, though probably much of my lack of enthusiasm for Italian varietals on American soil may have to do with the rather desultory examples of Sangiovese I have tasted over the years from California. Clearly, the Giornata wines are cut from a very different cloth! I was absolutely enthralled by the quality of their very classically-styled Nebbiolo, Aglianico and other bottlings and look forward to following their progress with each passing vintage. 2014 Vermentino- Giornata (Paso Robles) The 2014 Vermentino from Brian and Stefanie Terrizzi is excellent and very classi- cally made (like all of their wines), fermented and raised in stainless steel and bottled fairly early to preserve freshness and bounce on the palate. The bouquet is lovely, wafting from the glass in a vibrant blend of apple, green olive, salty soil tones, citrus peel and a nice topnote of freshlyculled herbs. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish, crisp and complex, with lovely minerality and a long, complex and zesty finish. A lovely Vermentino. 2016-2020. 91. 2014 Barbera- Giornata (Paso Robles) The 2014 Barbera from Giornata is fermented with indigenous yeasts and raised primarily in a thousand liter foudre, with the overflow finding its way into old casks for its relatively short elevage.

  • Montefalco Sagrantino - Entering a New Chapter
Montefalco Sagrantino - Entering A New Chapter Tom HylandContributor Food & Drink I write about wine (and sometimes food) from around the world. Sagrantino Vineyards at Tenuta Bellafonte, Bevagna Photo ©Tom Hyland Montefalco Sagrantino is among the richest, most powerful of all Italian wines. That statement alone would believe you to think that it is also one of the most critically praised and beloved of all the country’s wines. But that simply is not the situation. However, thanks to a renewed effort by area producers, Montefalco Sagrantino is enjoying a renaissance, as vintners are crafting more refined offerings that display a new era for this wine and potentially, more attention from critics and consumers alike. The name of the wine derives from the town of Montefalco in central Umbria; Sagrantino is the only variety that can be used to make the wine. This gives the wine a unique identity, much like Barolo that is produced entirely with Nebbiolo, or Brunello di Montalcino, crafted exclusively from Sangiovese. However, as Sagrantino is one of the most tannic varieties in the world - arguably the most tannic of all the major varieties in Italy - this accounts for a problematic image of Montefalco Sagrantino being a wine that is too bitter and rough, a wine that lacks charm and elegance. It’s an image that area producers have battled for years, and now they’re doing something about it. Maturing the wine in large casks known as grandi botti is one way to lessen the tannic identity of the wine, although some producers that use barriques for aging have also found ways to craft more elegant wines.
