  • Shanghai Quartet 2020-21 Biography
SHANGHAI QUARTET 2020-21 BIOGRAPHY Over the past thirty-seven years the Shanghai Quartet has become one of the world’s foremost chamber ensembles. The Shanghai’s elegant style, impressive technique, and emotional breadth allows the group to move seamlessly between masterpieces of Western music, traditional Chinese folk music, and cutting-edge contemporary works. Formed at the Shanghai Conservatory in 1983, soon after the end of China’s harrowing Cultural Revolution, the group came to the United States to complete its studies; since then the members have been based in the U.S. while maintaining a robust touring schedule at leading chamber-music series throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Recent performance highlights include performances at Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Freer Gallery (Washington, D.C.), and the Festival Pablo Casals in France, and Beethoven cycles for the Brevard Music Center, the Beethoven Festival in Poland, and throughout China. The Quartet also frequently performs at Wigmore Hall, the Budapest Spring Festival, Suntory Hall, and has collaborations with the NCPA and Shanghai Symphony Orchestras. Upcoming highlights include the premiere of a new work by Marcos Balter for the Quartet and countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo for the Phillips Collection, return performances for Maverick Concerts and the Taos School of Music, and engagements in Los Angeles, Syracuse, Albuquerque, and Salt Lake City. Among innumberable collaborations with eminent artists, they have performed with the Tokyo, Juilliard, and Guarneri Quartets; cellists Yo-Yo Ma and Lynn Harrell; pianists Menahem Pressler, Peter Serkin, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Yuja Wang; pipa virtuoso Wu Man; and the vocal ensemble Chanticleer.

By Margaret Wappler, Los Angeles Times September 14, 2011 Los Angeles is teeming with places to perform if advertisement you're a rock band stoking dreams of becoming the next Arcade Fire, but what about a classically trained string quartet, one that can play with party guru Andrew WK or the National's stormy rock? The art world, ready to foster the kind of cross-pollination that sparked between Merce Cunningham and John Cage, is ready to receive you with open arms. It's a good thing, too, in a city where genre-jumping musicians have few mid-level-sized homes. Either play in the splendor of Walt Disney Concert Hall or the tiny confines of the Smell or Pehrspace. Or, in the case of local heroes Calder Quartet, talk to Tim Blum, co-owner of Culver City's prestigious Blum & Poe gallery. On Wednesday, the Calder Quartet will perform, followed by a piano set from their mentor Terry Riley, at an event designed to raise money for the group to commission new pieces. Hosted in Blum & Poe's new space partially conceived for interdisciplinary works, it's the kind of show that feels auspicious for its connective tissue between the art world and classical music that expands tradition to incorporate forays into rock, jazz, Indian raga or whatever catches the roaming ear.

  • MIT Announces: Chisholm, Rivest, and Thompson Appointed As New
MIT Announces: Chisholm, Rivest, and Thompson appointed as new Institute Professors A marine biologist who studies tiny ocean organisms, a computer scientist who developed a global security standard, and an acclaimed violist who has performed with renowned orchestras have been awarded MIT’s highest faculty honor: the title of Institute Professor. Sallie “Penny” Chisholm, Ron Rivest, and Marcus Thompson join a small group of Institute Professors at MIT, now numbering 13, along with 10 Institute Professors emeriti. Their new appointments are effective July 1, making them the first faculty members to be named Institute Professors since 2008. MIT President L. Rafael Reif says, “Although our new Institute Professors were chosen as individuals, it is interesting to consider them together: Penny Chisholm, a pioneering field scientist whose discoveries revolutionized our understanding of the oceans; Ron Rivest, a brilliant theorist and problem-solver who ranks as one of the founding fathers of modern cryptography; and Marcus Thompson, among the most celebrated string performers in the United States today. “Their fields could not be more different,” Reif says. “Yet each is an explorer, creator, and teacher of the first order. Together they reflect the standard of faculty excellence that is a signature of MIT.” The appointments of Chisholm, Rivest, and Thompson as Institute Professors were announced today in an email to the faculty from Provost Martin Schmidt and Steven Hall, chair of the MIT faculty and a professor of aeronautics and astronautics. “This special position is a unique honor bestowed by the Faculty and Administration of MIT,” Schmidt and Hall wrote. “Such appointments recognize exceptional distinction by a combination of leadership, accomplishment, and service in the scholarly, educational, and general intellectual life of the Institute and wider community.” Marcus Thompson “A native of the Bronx, Marcus Thompson has been an influential presence at MIT for over four decades, as both an internationally recognized concert musician and a lauded instructor.

As MATA nears completion of its 13th year of concerts, commissions, installations, panels and collaborations, we continue to be motivated by the same things that inspired Philip Glass, Eleonor Sandresky and Lisa Bielawa at the first MATA concerts in 1997. Each year, the body of work that we and our panel of established peers encounter in the Call For Submissions (including well over 400 composers at this point!) is full of surprising and innovative music by artists who are sure to be leaders in the field in the decades to come. We draw inspiration from their ingenuity and energy during the selection process and throughout the year. 2010 brings many firsts to the MATA Festival, including the American debut of Italian new music ensemble L’arsenale, a group making waves all over Italy, and the Festival debut of the Calder Quartet, Ensemble Pamplemousse, and New York’s venerable new music ensemble, Argento.
