    An Expedition to the remote islands of the South Atlantic South Georgia – Tristan da Cunha – St. Helena Our ship m/v Plancius has spent the winter season, "The Austral summer", in Antarctica and turns north in March to sail in the Arctic during the summer season. We are guests aboard her voyage between the hemispheres. Our voyage takes us to three of the Atlantic's most inaccessible island groups and islands: South Georgia, Tristan da Cunha and St. Helena. Tristan da Cunha is the world's most solitary island community and furthest away from any mainland. The expedition is led by Captain Torbjörn Svensson, who has visited all the islands on many occasions. Torbjörn is the son of the Swedish author and artist Roland Svensson, who himself made repeated long stays at Tristan and St. Helena. The memory of Roland lives on and the islanders on Tristan and St. Helena will receive us as their friends. Tour guide and lecturer: Captain Torbjörn Svensson is the son of Roland Svensson, who in his time wrote among other the classics, “Lonely Isles” on the Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland islands and “Archipelago Life in days gone by” on the Stockholm world of islands. Through his father, Torbjörn has a strong connection to the islands and he looks forward to introducing us to his friends on Tristan da Cunha. Torbjörn has visited Tristan and St. Helena as commander of cruise expedition vessels and he has made several visits to South Georgia, the Antarctic Peninsula and Ushuaia.     In the Wake of Penguins The route/purpose of this 5 week expedition is the extraordinary chance to see far flung corners of the South Atlantic. We will be leaving from Puerto Madryn, a coastal town in picturesque Patagonia. Our aim is to reach South Georgia, an island positioned in the South Atlantic about 800 nm to the south east of the Falklands. It is true oasis set in the chilly waters surrounding the Antarctic continent. Millions of penguins, seals and elephant seals live in this harsh environment, hundreds of miles from civilization. The expedition is a real challenge for sailors - to this day, very few have reached there. It is an incredible chance to see nature at its wildest and the remnants of the whaling industry. For seven days we will observe penguins, seals and elephant seals in their natural environment. Glaciers and icebergs will surround us as we sail, as well as derelict whaling stations and memories of some of the first Antarctic Expeditions. The next leg will take us to the Falklands where for three days we will attempt to grasp at least some of the history of these islands. The expedition will finish at the "end of the world", in Ushuaia – the capital of Tierra del Fuego. Vianna1* Abstract Background: Historical factors, demography, reproduction and dispersal are crucial in determining the genetic structure of seabirds. In the Antarctic marine environment, penguins are a major component of the avian biomass, dominant predators and important bioindicators of ecological change. Populations of chinstrap penguins have decreased in nearly all their breeding sites, and their range is expanding throughout the Antarctic Peninsula. Population genetic structure of this species has been studied in some colonies, but not between breeding colonies in the Antarctic Peninsula or at the species’ easternmost breeding colony (Bouvetøya). Results: Connectivity, sex-biased dispersal, diversity, genetic structure and demographic history were studied using 12 microsatellite loci and a mitochondrial DNA region (HVRI) in 12 breeding colonies in the South Shetland Islands (SSI) and the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP), and one previously unstudied sub-Antarctic island, 3600 km away from the WAP (Bouvetøya). High genetic diversity, evidence of female bias-dispersal and a sign of population expansion after the last glacial maximum around 10,000 mya were detected. Limited population genetic structure and lack of isolation by distance throughout the region were found, along with no differentiation between the WAP and Bouvetøya (overall microsatellite FST = 0.002,p=0.273; mtDNA FST = − 0.004,p=0.766), indicating long distance dispersal.
