In a brief article of 1993, Lucian Boia outlined the destinies of some Western models which had come in contact with the Romanian culture; a Belgian model, seen as an appendage of the French, an English one, which in his opinion was completely marginal, and others that enjoyed a more or less brilliant fate (German, Italian, etc.) 1. Please note that each of the topics mentioned above enjoyed special attention in Romanian historiography; see for instance the studies authored by Aurel Filimon, Gheorghe Platon and even my own, dedicated to the Romanian- Belgian relations; those by Dan Berindei, Pompiliu Eliade, Nicolae Iorga and Nicolae Isar for the French case; those by Zigu Ornea regarding the German influences on the political and literary thought of the Junimea group; those by Eugen Denize and George L ăzărescu, on the cultural and political interferences between Italy and Romania, etc.

  • FINAL REPORT International Commission on the Holocaust In
FINAL REPORT of the International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania Presented to Romanian President Ion Iliescu November 11, 2004 Bucharest, Romania NOTE: The English text of this Report is currently in preparation for publication. © International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania. All rights reserved. DISTORTION, NEGATIONISM, AND MINIMALIZATION OF THE HOLOCAUST IN POSTWAR ROMANIA Introduction This chapter reviews and analyzes the different forms of Holocaust distortion, denial, and minimalization in post-World War II Romania. It must be emphasized from the start that the analysis is based on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s definition of the Holocaust, which Commission members accepted as authoritative soon after the Commission was established. This definition1 does not leave room for doubt about the state-organized participation of Romania in the genocide against the Jews, since during the Second World War, Romania was among those allies and a collaborators of Nazi Germany that had a systematic plan for the persecution and annihilation of the Jewish population living on territories under their unmitigated control. In Romania’s specific case, an additional “target-population” subjected to or destined for genocide was the Romany minority. This chapter will employ an adequate conceptualization, using both updated recent studies on the Holocaust in general and new interpretations concerning this genocide in particular. Insofar as the employed conceptualization is concerned, two terminological clarifications are in order. First, “distortion” refers to attempts to use historical research on the dimensions and significance of the Holocaust either to diminish its significance or to serve political and propagandistic purposes. Although its use is not strictly confined to the Communist era, the term “distortion” is generally employed in reference to that period, during which historical research was completely subjected to controls by the Communist Party’s political censorship.

  • Romanian Orthodoxism's Appropriation of the Silver
Landshaft No. 3 (2009) ISSN: 1940-0837 --- --- Repositioning Russia: Romanian Orthodoxism’s Appropriation of the Silver Age Roland Clark (University of Pittsburgh) T his essay is about an appropriation that did not happen, of an as yet unformed Russian tradition, by men who did not read Russian. The cultural movement known as Romanian Orthodoxism exhibited many of the trademarks of Russian symbolism and of the religious, Slavophile disciples of Vladimir Solov'ev. 1 It emerged in the early 1920s and continued to grow in popularity until the end of the Second World War. Although strong similarities existed between Romanian Orthodoxists and some Silver Age Russian intellectuals, the former were diffident about acknowledging any debt to the Russians, even while they eagerly recognized intellectual debts from elsewhere in the world. They were so diffident, in fact, that it is not even clear whether we are dealing with a case of cultural diffusion or convergent evolution. If Romanian Orthodoxism developed completely independently of Russian Silver Age influences, the case should cause us to pay attention to transnational trends when constructing Russian intellectual genealogies, rather than contenting ourselves with the indigenous Russian traditions that Silver Age writers themselves acknowledged. It is possible that similar Europe-wide conditions catalyzed both movements, and that Russia’s chronological precedence simply reflects the fact that these conditions emerged earlier in Russia than in Romania. Roland Clark 2 Romanian Orthodoxists were well informed about the Russian Silver Age, however, and so the question becomes one of why they did not wholeheartedly appropriate the Russian tradition, and why they were hesitant to acknowledge those ideas that they did find in Russia.

  • Images of Town Life in the Writings of Ion Călugăru, Isac Peltz and Ury Benador
Romanica Cracoviensia 12 / 2012 10.4467/20843917RC.12.020.0737 Gabriela Gavril-Antonesei Alexandru Ioan Cuza University Iaşi IMAGES OF TOWN LIFE IN THE WRITINGS OF ION CĂLUGĂRU, ISAC PELTZ AND URY BENADOR. ASPECTS OF THEIR RECEPTION1 CONTEXT Isac Peltz, Ion Călugăru, Ury Benador – and other important writers, particularly M. Sebastian, who will not be discussed in this paper, though – published their most representative work in the fourth decade of the last century. At the time, Romania faced a strong surge of nationalistic political movements, which led to multiplied and intensified anti-Semitic acts. More and more voices of the time2 – among them some public figures of a rather liberal line, and representatives of the church – were requesting the “cleansing” of Romania of its Jews and even the review and annulment of the citizenship granted to them in 1923. Under the party name of “Totul pentru Ţară” (“Everything for the Country”), the Garda de Fier (Iron Guard) obtained in the 1937 elections 16.5% of the votes of the electorate, thus becoming the third political power in the country. When the PNC (Goga-Cuza) government came to power in 1937, they imposed an anti-Semitic legislation that deprived more than 200 000 Jews of their civil rights.3 The media campaigns for a “Romanisation” of society – as pursued by Pamfil Şeicaru in Curentul, Nicolae Iorga in Cuget clar and Neamul Românesc – are proof that the anti-Semitic ideas and language were common in many circles.4 In December 1 A version of this paper was presented at the Conference “I Am a Romanian: the Bucharest – Tel Aviv Route”, organized by The Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv, in partnership with the “Ben Gurion” University in Beer Sheva, 29.03–1.04.2011.

  • THE ROMANIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY in the 1990'S
32 Romanian Journal of Political Science THE ROMANIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY IN THE 1990’s Bogdan Murgescu∗ Abstract The quantity and quality of Romanian historians work improved seriously after the fall of communism. Altough the new generation of historians, historians that borrowed the know-how from the West, have to face many obstacles, the battle is not lost already. The battle between those who want to revive the “grand-narrative” from communism and those who are trying to deconstruct some unfounded myths is still on the scene. Ideological constraints and political active involvement in sustaining the “grand-narrative” are serious obstacles for those trying to promote new methodological frameworks and debates. It seems that the state still holds the power to determine the official writers of Romanian history by encouraging a certain number of chosen historians to write a treaty under the aegis of Romanian Academy. Whatsoever, the deconstructivist generation managed to survive and their work to be appreciated by a serious number of intellectuals. Foreign grants are permitting nominal research and each historian can follow its own academic choice. Key words: grand-narrative, deconstructivism, reluctance to change, historian debate, mentalities ∗ Bogdan Murgescu, Ph.D. in history at the University of Bucharest and also a Roman Herzog Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Berlin . He is currently professor at the History Department of the University of Bucharest, and has been visiting professor also at the University of Pittsburgh. Romanian Journal of Political Science 33 The general framework The revolution of 1989 brought important changes in the field of Romanian historical studies6.

Modernity, Memory and Identity in South-East Europe Series Editor Catharina Raudvere Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies University of Copenhagen Copenhagen, Denmark This series explores the relationship between the modern history and pres- ent of South-East Europe and the long imperial past of the region. This approach aspires to offer a more nuanced understanding of the concepts of modernity and change in this region, from the nineteenth century to the present day. Titles focus on changes in identity, self-representation and cultural expressions in light of the huge pressures triggered by the interac- tion between external influences and local and regional practices. The books cover three significant chronological units: the decline of empires and their immediate aftermath, authoritarian governance during the twen- tieth century, and recent uses of history in changing societies in South- East Europe today. Cultural Nationalism alongside Official State-Building: The Romanian Cultural League in the Interwar Period By Anca Mandru Submitted to Central European University History Department In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Professor Constantin Iordachi Second Reader: Professor Marsha Siefert CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2009 Copyright in the text of this thesis rests with the Author. CEU eTD Collection i Abstract This thesis uses the case study of the Romanian Cultural League in the interwar period to question generally held assumptions about the development and endurance of cultural nationalism and its characteristics. The thesis finds that in the Romanian case cultural nationalism has survived the fulfillment of its goals by the creation of Greater Romania in 1918 and readjusted its program to the context of the interwar period. A survey of the League’s program and activity shows that the cultural nationalism advocated by the organization coexisted and complemented the official projects aimed at creating a cohesive national culture. The League engaged in cultural practices aimed at a moral regeneration of the community and a cultural unification of the various traditions characteristic to the provinces making up interwar Romania.
