    Upper Calder Valley Renaissance What’s it all about? Yorkshire Forward are the Economic Development Agency for Yorkshire and the Humber; working to make Yorkshire and the Humber the UK's number one region. John Thompson & Partners (Community Planners, Urban Designers and Architects) have been appointed by Yorkshire Forward to lead the Renaissance Market Towns process for the Upper Calder Valley. What’s happened so far? John Thompson & Partners have been working with the community of the Valley over the last six months holding a series of Action Planning Days in Todmorden, Walsden, Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd and Sowerby Bridge. They have also been visiting local schools, organisations, partnerships and businesses and have developed a draft Vision and Masterplan for each of the towns. Key themes that have already emerged include: • Promoting a new image for the Valley • Enhancing the Valley Setting • Creating Sustainable Communities • Establishing Key Gateways and Arteries • Sustaining Economic Growth • Empowering Civic Leadership • Reinforcing the Quality of the Town Centres • Rationalising Land Use AValley Team is being created that will act as an open forum for ongoing ideas and debate to create long term investment projects that will regenerate and revitalise the Upper Calder Valley.     “By Water to Wakefield”: Introduction and the Aire and Calder Navigation Notes on John Goodchild’s talk at Wakefield Archives on 16th April 2014 John Goodchild introduced his series of three talks by explaining that these would provide an outline history to the three waterways that meet at Wakefield. The Aire and Calder Navigation was opened from Weeland through to Leeds and Wakefield at the end of the 17th century, and the Calder and Hebble Navigation in the 1760s from Wakefield to Salterhebble and later to Sowerby Bridge. These two navigations used the existing rivers Aire and Calder, dredging them, and by a system of weirs and locks made them navigable. The third waterway was the Barnsley Canal which opened in 1799 and extended to Cawthorne in 1802. From Weeland with access to the North Sea, goods could be transported north to the whole of the Vale of York and up the River Ure to Boroughbridge, south to Lincolnshire, and west to Yorkshire and Lancashire. The Barnsley Canal gave access to the Don Valley, and by 1816 to Sheffield. From Doncaster via the River Trent and the Grand Union Canal it was possible to reach London. John had acquired documents concerning the Aire and Calder Navigation from a country house sale at South Elmsall. Documents relating to the Calder and Hebble Navigation had been 'dumped' at Sowerby Bridge having been disposed of from the Halifax offices of the navigation. The Barnsley Canal documents came from a firm of Wakefield lawyers. The waterways enabled and encouraged commerce and industry as raw and manufactured goods could be carried at economic prices compared to road transport.

    Report to Cabinet Date of Meeting 30th March 2021 Portfolio A Thriving Economy Report Author Dawn Sexton Public Document The Formation of a Community Rail Partnership for the Calder Valley Line Executive Summary 1.1 Members of the Cabinet are asked to approve the formation of a Community Rail Partnership (CRP) for the Calder Valley Line, which would include all five of the borough’s railway stations along with seven railway stations in Calderdale. 1.2 CRP’s bring together local groups and partners along railway lines to work with the rail industry, and deliver a range of community engagement and promotional activities to encourage ownership and improve access to and use of local rail services. CRPs promote understanding of the importance of local railways, in terms of improving mobility and sustainable travel, community cohesion and wellbeing and social and economic development. 1.3 Officers from Rochdale and Calderdale Councils, in conjunction with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), have been working together on a proposal to establish a CRP with Rochdale Borough Council acting as the accountable body for the partnership in the first instance. 1.4 Forming a CRP would involve creating a Community Rail Officer post (part- time) to support the partnership, to develop a business plan and deliver activity to promote use of the Calder Valley Line. The work will increase community engagement and complement the Council’s Rail Corridor Strategy which promotes the physical regeneration of land and buildings around the Borough’s rail stations. Recommendation 2.1 Cabinet approves the formation of a CRP for the Calder Valley Line, in collaboration with Calderdale Council.
