Peace Corps is an American volunteer organization that was started in 1961 and has been in Cambodia since 2007. As of 2011, close to 100 Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) have worked in 13 different provinces and in 70 different districts, with more to come. These PCVs work as English teachers in Cambodian public secondary schools in both urban and rural settings. PCVs are paired with Cambodian counterparts, or “co-teachers”, with whom they exchange methodological perspectives and share teaching responsibilities. This manual is the collaborative effort of numerous Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) who generously contributed the hard-earned wisdom they acquired through their experiences as English language teachers in Cambodia. The PCVs who have contributed to the creation of this manual have had thousands of hours of practical teaching experience with the English for Cambodia (EFC) textbooks – in addition to working with Khmer counterparts – thereby giving them close familiarity with the various challenges facing English teachers in Cambodian public schools today. Over the past few years, PCVs in Cambodia have developed numerous teaching materials and activities, and have generated fresh ideas for improving English education in the public schools. This manual is a compilation of these different resources. Full of warm-up and review activities, example sentences for difficult grammar, tips for teaching complex grammar, and MUCH, much more, the EFC Made Easy teaching manual is meant to be used in combination with the EFC books 1-6. It attempts to address as many teaching situations in Cambodia as possible. Whether you are using this manual as a teacher in a large, urban, well-financed school or in a tiny, rural school lacking proper teaching materials, it is the editors’ belief that you will be able to make this manual an asset in your classroom. We hope this book will ultimately be more than just the activities contained on its pages. If you are an English teacher in Cambodia, this manual was made with you in mind. Make it your own! If you have any comments, questions, or feedback about the book, or if you have more ideas to add to a future edition, please send us an e-mail at [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you! Thanks and good luck! The Editors 2 Introduction to EFC Made Easy Acknowledgements for EFC Made Easy! • Expedition to the South
Expedition to the South Day 1: Arrival in Phnom Penh Commence your tour this morning with a journey south of Phnom Penh to Tonle Bati, a small lake with a beach and two impressive Angkorian laterite temples from the late 12th century, Ta Prohm and Yeay Peau. Explore the jungle-clad and atmospheric Ta Prohm, a temple built by King Jayavarman VII (who ruled from 1181 to 1201). Visit Phnom Chisor, a temple perched atop a hill and constructed of laterite and brick with carved lintels of sandstone. The inscriptions found here date back to the 11th century and the wooden doors to the sanctuary are decorated with intricate carvings. Continue to Angkor Borei, a 6th century monument built in laterite by King Rudravarman of Funan. His patron deity was Vishnu and many Hindu statues survive from this site. It is one of the few remaining sites with traces of the Kingdom of Funan (a kingdom influenced by India and thought to have spread as far as southern Burma and Indonesia). Next, head to a hill south of Angkor Borei, Phnom Da, which houses four artificial caves, built as shrines. At the completion of this visit you will be returned to your hotel for the evening at leisure. Day 2: Kep / Includes Breakfast Enjoy an early breakfast at your hotel this morning and depart for Kampot province. There are varieties of caves around Kampot, which is worth exploring and limestone mountains (phnom) dot the landscape between Kampot and Kep. Many contain limestone caves, some adorned with exotic rock formations, and almost all containing Buddhist shines.

This dissertation argues that recent moves by the Cambodian government to transform this site into an "historical-tourist area" is overwhelmingly dominated by commercial priorities. However, the tourism project simultaneously effects an historical narrative that inherits but transforms the government's historiographic endeavors that immediately followed Democratic Kampuchea's 1979 ousting.
