Box 37012, Washington, D.C. 20013-7012, U.S.A. <[email protected]> Abstract The original description of the Egyptian Pygmy Shrew or Sacred Shrew, Sorex religiosus I. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (Mammalia: Soricidae: Crocidura religiosa), was based on mummies obtained by Joseph Passalacqua from the ancient Egyptian necropolis at Thebes, Egypt. The description and naming of this species is commonly credited to Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire’s (1827) compendium and review of shrews in the Mémoires du Muséum d’Histoire naturelle. However, this author also described this species in two earlier publications. The first was in a footnote to Passalacqua’s (1826) Catalogue raisonné et historique des antiquités découvertes en Égypte; the second in January 1827 in the 11th volume of the Dictionnaire classique d’Histoire naturelle. In each case, he explained what he considered to be the distinguishing characteristics of the species and presented its common and scientific names. Priority, therefore, goes to Geoffroy Saint- Hilaire’s description in Passalacqua’s (1826) Catalogue. Terrestrial Mammal Species of Special Concern in California, Bolster, B.C., Ed., 1998 22 Salt marsh wandering shrew, Sorex vagrans halicoetes Paul W. Collins Description: A small to medium sized (100-110 mm TL), dark shrew, sooty seal brown to black above with a relatively long (37-41 mm), unicolored tail; dark brown ventrum; and moderately large high-domed skull (Grinnell 1913). Distinguished from upland S. v. vagrans by its darker dorsum and brown ventrum (silvery brown in vagrans), slightly larger body size, broader rostrum, and longer maxillary tooth-row (Grinnell 1913, Jackson 1928, Findley 1955). Distinguished from S. o. sinuosus by its slightly lighter color, larger size, browner ears, and high, dome-shaped cranium (Grinnell 1913). Weight from 3.1 to 7.2 g (males) and from 2.7 to 7.0 g (females) (Rudd 1955b). Distinguished from upland S. v. vagrans by darker dorsal and ventral pelage (Grinnell 1913). Taxonomic Remarks: The salt-marsh wandering shrew was first described as S. halicoetes Grinnell (1913). Jackson (1928) relegated halicoetes to a subspecies of S. vagrans, a convention followed by subsequent authors (Grinnell 1933, Findley 1955, Hennings and Hoffmann 1977, Junge and Hoffmann 1981, Carraway 1990). The taxonomy of S. vagrans group has had a confusing history (Merriam 1895, Grinnell 1913, Jackson 1928). There is little controversy about the taxonomic status of S. v. halicoetes, although the karyotype from halicoetes was identical to S. v. vagrans from the northern part of the San Francisco Bay region (Brown 1974). This taxon still needs a more thorough biochemical and morphometric analysis to help clarify its phylogenetic and taxonomic relationship to other members of the S. -

Seewis virus (SWSV), a soricomorph-borne Hantavirus hantavirus, is widespread in Eurasia, ranging from Central Siberia to Western Europe. To gain insight into the Seewis phylogeography and evolutionary history of SWSV in Finland, lung tissue samples of 225 common shrews (Sorex Sorex araneus araneus) trapped from different parts of Finland were screened for the presence of SWSV RNA. Forty-two of the Evolution samples were positive. Partial small (S), medium (M) and large (L) segments of the virus were sequenced, and Phylogeography analyzed together with all SWSV sequences available in Genbank. The phylogenetic analysis of the partial S- segment sequences suggested that all Finnish SWSV strains shared their most recent common ancestor with the Eastern European strains, while the L-segment suggested multiple introductions. -

Collins Museum records of S. o. salarius extend from the vicinity of the mouth of the Pajaro River (Watsonville Slough), Santa Cruz County (Rudd 1948), south along the immediate coast to Carmel (Von Bloeker 1939). This subspecies was originally described as inhabiting coastal salt-marshes and adjacent sandhill areas in the vicinity of Monterey and Carmel bays, Monterey County (Von Bloeker 1938, 1939). According to Williams (1986), it occupies riparian, wetland and upland terrestrial communities in the vicinity of the Salinas River Delta. The capture of 61 ornate shrews near the Salinas River mouth in July 1990 with 700 trap-nights of effort suggests that S. o. salarius may still be common in the area (J. Maldonado pers. comm.). More recent data than these on the distribution and status of this subspecies were not available during the preparation of this document. Although the Salinas ornate shrew has a restricted distribution in a region under pressure from urban and agricultural developments, it occupies a diversity of habitats, and much of the remaining coastal salt marshes within its geographic range are protected from development. Recent surveys indicate it is still common. Rudd (1948) and Junge and Hoffmann (1981) questioned the currently accepted taxonomy of ornate shrews from the vicinity of Monterey Bay. A more extensive range-wide genetic and morphologic evaluation of ornate shrews is currently under way (Maldonado pers. comm.). Results of that study should help to clarify whether ornate shrews from the vicinity of Monterey Bay warrant subspecific recognition. -

Northern Water Shrew (Sorex palustris albibarbis) Pennsylvania Candidate Rare Speceis State Rank: S3 (vulnerable), Global Rank: G4T5 (apparently secure) Identification The northern water shrew (Sorex palustris albibarbis) is a relatively large member of the Sorex genus, reaching lengths of 130170mm and weighting 1016 grams. Water shrews are black to gray in color with a silverygray belly and a bicolored tail. Thin chin and throat of this species are whitish, noticeably more so than the belly. The large, partially webbed hind feet have hairs on the toes and sides and there are some hairs present on the fore feet. The northern water shrew (Sorex palustris albibarbis) can be distinguished from other water shrews by very specific physical characteristics such as dental and skull features. Habitat/Behavior Water shrews are solitary, shortlived species with an average life span of Photo source: Charlie Eichelberger (PNHP) 18 months. They breed from December to September and have 23 litters per year. They are active both day and night and spend their lives in and around water. Water shrews can be found along streams and lake edges, in boulders and sphagnum moss. They dive and swim into water when foraging for food and to avoid predators. Air trapped in the fur allows them to immediately come to the surface when they stop swimming. The fringe of hairs on the hind foot trap air and allow the shrews to walk on water. Easy access to food is essential to the survival of this species. Water shrews can only survive without food for up to three hours. -

This tiny animal lives in damp places with good ground cover, like sedge meadows, wet prairies, drainage ditches, peatlands, bottomland forests, swamps and fencerows. A masked shrew feeds on insects and other invertebrates. It has a high metabolic rate and eats more than its own body weight in food in a day. The masked shrew is nocturnal. Abstract approved: William Wheeler An ecological study of small forest mammals was conducted from 1964 to 1970.The objectives were to obtain chronological infor- mation relative to the effects of current logging practices on vegeta- tional succession and small mammal populations. The locale of the study was in the west-central Cascade Moun- tains of Oregon.The principal timber species was Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii. The climate was characterized by heavy precipi- tation in the winter and dry summers. Snowfall varied from slight to heavy.Elevation was 3000 feet. The study areas were composed of a 125-year-old timbered con- trol unit, a clearcut non-burned unit, and a clearcut slash-burned unit. Density and distribution of the small mammals were determined by live-trapping and release of marked animals.Reproductive infor- mation of some species was noted. Home range areas was computed for the more numerous species of rodents. More than 4530 individual small mammals of 23 mammalian species were marked on the three areas during the six years ofthe study.Over 90 percent of the total animals caught consisted of five species: Sorex spp, Eutamias townsendii, Peromyscus maniculatus, and Microtus oregoni. The small mammal densities varied from year to year.They were comparable between units on a monthly basis exceptfor the unburned clearcut unit which differed for a year following logging. -
