The district has a school population of 3,575 (Jams are 1980), housed in three elementary schools,one middle school, one junior-senior high school andone high school. The communities are white collar, middle to upper-middle income. Swarthmore is the home of Swarthmore College. Most parents are college graduates, andmany hold graduate degrees. During the 1979-80 school year, there wereapprox- imately 450 students from grades three through eightidentified, ac- cording to standards set by the Pennsylvania Departmentof Education, and the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District,as gifted and eligible for participation in a district-wideprogram for gifted students. (See Appendix A). At the Nether Providence Middle School, witha total school population of 593, there were 129 students involvedin the Gifted and Talented program. The Wallingford-Swarthmore School District beganits gifted program in 1076 %,ith a pilot of thv Triad Enrichment Programat the elementary level. The people in front of it represent the diverse community support and the public/private partnerships which have contributed to the vitality of the Borough. The sunburst at the top shows the bright and promising future ahead. Wrapping the two sides are sycamore trees which are native to the Borough and reflect the new growth, attention to the environment, and concern for the beautification of the community. The straight and wavy stars and stripes lend a patriotic feel. The waves represent Marcus Hook’s proud beginning as a waterfront settlement. The five stars refer to the five star quality of life as well as the five war memorials throughout the Borough.
