W~VM-$ea pew Greetings From The Executive Director

Dear Patrons:

Welcome to the 50th Anniversary summer season of The Little Theatre On The Square. We are one of the few theatres that started as a summer stock operation that can boast of being 50 years old. We are proud of our distinguished past, equally proud of what we currently produce and promise that we will strive to ensure you will be proud of what we present in the future.

Over the years we have hosted many "stars" and given a great many young people the opportunity to hone their craft as they started their careers. Some of these people have gone on to become "stars" in their own right. And some have returned to our stage to share what they have learned in the professional world.

Anna McNeely was an intern at The Little Theatre On The Square, has gone on to a successfU1 career on Broadway and has "come home" in recent years to perform again on this stage. Greg Graham, who was an intern here in 1997, was in the Broadway productions of FOSSE and CHICAGO and was dance captain for HAIRSPRAY when it opened on Broadway. He returned here this summer to direct our production of HAIRSPRAY.Those are just two examples of similar stories that could fill an entire book.

The Little Theatre On The Square... 50 years in the making! Thanks to all who have made this celebration possible. A very special thanks to you, our patrons, for without you we would be playing to an empty house. And what kind of fUn would that be?

Enjoy the show and tell a friend about The Little Theatre On The Square!

Sincerely, padL bani

THE SOUND OF MUSIC July 25-August 5

Rodgers and Hammerstein's most beloved musical about Maria, a woman studying to be a nun, who is sent out to be a governess or the family of Captain von Trapp. The children, initially hostile and mischievous, come to like her, and she finds herself falling in love with Captain von Trapp. Join us for this family favorite filled with songs like Climb Every Mountain, Do Re Mi, and the title song The Sound Of Music.

La Cage Aux Folles August 8-19

This Tony Award winner for Best Musical is a boisterous and uplift- ing celebration of love and family in an untraditional setting. The inspiration for the 1996 film The Birdcage, La Cage Aux Folles is the story of Albin and Georges, two middle-aged partners who run a drag nightclub in St. Tropez who £ind out their son is going to marry the daughter of a local morals crusader. The show is filled with outlandish costumes, extravagant dance numbers, and a jazzy Jerry Herman score. M. Seth Reines Artistic Director We have a SEAT for you!

This year The Little Theatre cele- brates its 50th year of bringing live performances to the prairie. Three years ago, the extensive renova- tion project was completed offer- ing a beautiful updated, expanded facility in which to enjoy the arts.

Founded by Guy S. Little, Jr., a man who was fulfilling his lifelong dream to operate a quality professional theatre, The Little Theatre On The Square first raised its curtain in 1957 for a lively performance of Brigadoon. Mr. Little ran the theatre as a commercial venture through 1978. During that time more than 175 famous stars performed on its stage, including Mickey Rooney, Alan Alda, Ann Miller, Don Ameche, Betty Grable, John Carradine, Leonard Nimoy and Forrest Tucker.

After 22 years of producing outstanding theatre in Sullivan, Mr. Little moved on to pursue other ventures. In 1981, The Little Theatre On The Square began operating as a not-for-profit corporation, governed by a Board of Trustees who represented its regional market area in Central Illinois.

The Little Theatre On The Square, Inc. later purchased the theatre building from Mr. Little. The following year it purchased and renovated the adjoining building for its ticket office, pub- lic restrooms and administrative offices. The theatre continued to grow, and added amenities for its patrons and production company. In 2000, the theatre purchased another building for rehearsal space, a dance studio and apartments to house the company. Another building was purchased in 200 1 and converted into a technical production facility.

In 1997, the theatre, in cooperation with the City of Sullivan Civic Center, started an educa- tional outreach program to cultivate theatre arts. It began by teaching jazz, tap and ballet. In 2001, drama classes were added. The outreach program now has over 275 students.

In January, 2004 the educational outreach program added a touring program called S.T.A.R. which stands for Students' Theatre Arts Reach. Taking a play on the road, S.T.A.R. offered their performance to area schools. This spring, S.T.A.R. toured two productions and reached over 26,000 students.

Since 1981, The Little Theatre On The Square has played to well over 600,000 admissions, including over 130,000 admissions to the Theatre For Young Audiences series.

We hope you enjoy The Little Theatre for many years to come! I

Guy S Little, Jr., founder of The Little Theatre On The Square, salutes and pays tribute to three of his favorite stars who have passed away in recent weeks.

Aviva Crane, the beautiful and highly respected Chicago ac- tress, played opposite John Payne in Timid Tiger and Lusty Lamb. She returned to Sullivan doing leading roles in Pic- nic with Robert Horton, Any Wednesday with Elinor Dona- hue, Critic's Choice with Ray Milland and Equus with John Gavin. Ms. Crane was an amazing actress, a delightful lady and a great and very special friend.

The truly amazing, fabulous, glorious Kitty Carlisle, who starred for Mr. Little in The Marriage-Go-Round in 1978 at The Little Theatre and also starred in Where's Charley? in Milwaukee in 1980, was a very special friend for three de- cades. Kitty starred on Broadway, The Metropolitan Opera and A Night At The Opera with the MmBrothers; oppo- site Allan Jones, who starred in Sullivan in Blossom Tfme. Kitty was also a great success on the television show and many other game shows. She was so glamor- ous, and such a devine lady. She was still performing her one woman show, Here's To Life, when she was 96 years old and wanted more engagements. Mr. Little had a wonderful reunion with her in St. Louis this past October when she was performing her cabaret act. Of the some 300 stars Mr. Little has engaged between Sullivan, Phoenix, Milwaukee and else- where, he considers Kitty the love of his life and career.

The brilliant Tom Poston starred in Sullivan as Tevye in Fid- dler on the Roof and later for Mr. Little when he was produc- ing at the 2500 seat arena theatre in Milwaukee. Tom also played opposite Eileen Fulton in The Owl and the Pussycat and 13 Rue De L'amour in Sullivan and did many musicals on Broadway and at the St. Louis Muny Opera. Mr. Poston was a TV comedy veteran of , 's Variety Show and many other shows. Tom was manied to actress . Mr. Little considers Poston one of the best actors who ever appeared for him and certainly one of the finest, bright, delightful and brilliant stars.

Mr. Little salutes these three talented and wonderful stars and very close friends. God bless them! ! ! The Curtain is Going Up on the Latest Innovation for Your Flat Panel Display
