Inspiring change for Important Invertebrate Areas in the UK Invertebrate Survey of the A30 and A38 road verges in Area 1 (Cornwall and Devon) 11th September 2014 Susan Thompson - Grants & Trusts Officer Steven Falk Mark Tunmore Saving the small things that run the planet October 2015 1 Executive summary Between late May and late August 2015, Buglife Services carried out an invertebrate survey of the A30 and A38 in Devon and Cornwall. 41 visits to 23 sample points were undertaken on the A30 and 25 visits to 18 sampling points were undertaken on the A38, and a range of invertebrate groups were targeted. 866 taxa were recorded, the list being dominated by flies (361), beetles (177), butterflies & moths (109), bugs (82), bees, ants & aculeate wasps (53), spiders & harvestmen (50), grasshoppers & crickets (11) and dragonflies & damselflies (11). Pitfall trapping (not permitted) would have extended the beetle and bug lists greatly. The list included a number of rare and scarce species (notably the tachinid fly Policheta unicolor and lygaeid bug Trapezonotus ullrichi) and seemingly the first SW England record for the Southern oak bush-cricket (Meconema meridionalis) which is a recent British colonist. The list reveals the tremendous variety of life cycle strategies and other ecological relationships associated with road verge invertebrates. Pollinators are very well represented within the species list. The list and sample sizes reveal the strong influence of surrounding habitat, geographic location, altitude and underlying geology/ground conditions. There is a discernible ‘Bodmin Moor effect’ (decreased abundance and diversity of thermophilic invertebrates with altitude) and a strong ‘Dartmoor effect’ (increased abundance and diversity of thermophilic invertebrates on the A38 east of Dartmoor). -

Picture Gallery Promoting Britain's Railway for Passengers and Freight CHAIRMAN'S INTRODUCTION I wrote about the need for more passing places between Exeter and Yeovil Junction in our last newsletter of December 2016. Nothing changes! We still don’t have them and incidents continue to happen. How useful they would have been for diverting all the delayed trains, rather than just a few, following the recent fatality on the railway north of Taunton on 7th November. Railfuture will continue to press for improvements to the Waterloo line to allow more trains to run. Similarly we will continue to press for the complete reopening of the Exeter to Plymouth via Okehampton line. It is needed every time the sea disrupts train services through Dawlish, when the line is closed for planned engineering work and to increase line capacity west of Exeter. We cannot campaign for more trains to Dawlish and Teignmouth without recognising that this uses up line capacity, that could otherwise be used for developing more long distance services and freight. -

Subject: Unexplained Lights Later in the night a red sun/ike light was seen through the trees. It moved about and pulsed. At one point it appeared to throw offglowing particles and then broke into five separate white objects and then disappeared. Immediately thereafter, three starlike objects were noticed in the sky, two objects to the north and one to the south, all of which were about 1 oo offthe horizon. The objects moved rapidly in sharp angular movements and displayed red, green and blue lights. The objects to the north appeared to be elliptical through an 8-12 power lens. Then they turned to full circles. The objects to the north remained in the sky for an hour or more. The object to the south was visible for two or three hours and beamed down a stream of light from time to time. 8. LANDSCAPE TYPE 1: OPEN DOWNLAND Location and Boundaries 8.1. The landscape type encompasses a number of distinct downland blocks from the Marlborough Downs (1A) and Horton Down (1C) in the west running through to the Lambourn Downs (1B) and Blewbury Downs (1D) in the east. Boundaries are mainly defined by topography and the Upper Chalk geology, and in the north relate to the top of the Scarp (landscape type 5). To the south, the edge of the chalk similarly forms a distinct boundary. Overview The Open Downlands are the remote heart and core of the North Wessex Downs, with the dramatic landscapes created by the underlying chalk rocks being one of the defining features of the AONB. The subtle curves and undulations of the landform are revealed by the uniform clothing of cropped grass or cereals creating a landscape with a simple and elemental quality, accentuated by vast skies. The open, expansive views are punctuated by distinctive beech clumps crowning the downland summits, forming prominent and highly visible landmarks. Sparsely populated, the downlands possess a strong sense remoteness and isolation. Predominantly in arable cultivation these are landscapes of great seasonal variation, with muted browns and greys of the chalk and flinty soils in the ploughed autumn fields, giving way to fresh greens of the emerging crops in winter and spring and sweeping yellows and golds of summer. The characteristic close-cropped springy downland turf of the surviving herb-rich chalk grassland provides an important habitat and this landscape type contains the largest areas of designated chalk grassland in the AONB, with 15 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). -
