It consists of 12 collections including the University collection, which is formed by Acquisition through purchase or gift. Among them the Habib Ganj Collection consists of extremely valuable and rare manuscripts in Arabic, Persian & Urdu. The Persian manuscripts of this collection forms the first part of Vol. 1, which contains a brief description of Persian manuscripts, was broughtout in 1980 exclusively devoted to Persian Poetry. The volume in hand includes rest of the subjects, e g. Scriptures, Holy Qur'm and related disciplines, Hadls, Fiqh, Speculative theology, Mysticism, Polemical works, Medicine and various branches of exact science and pseudo-scinces. The arrangement and description of the Persian MSS in this volume is thematic. Efforts have been made to not only to give bibliographical details, but also description of the MSS which are considered essential. Doubt about deciphering of the authors, titles, and age period were classified to leave no doubt in the mind of the researcher. Authenticity is also established by comparing the details of MSS extant in other Oriental Libraries. My colleague Mr. S. Mahmood Hasan Qaisar has not left any stone unturned to make the description of the MSS as possible. The detailed study of MSS also helps to rectify the author, title, period etc., given in the original accession register of this collection which was transferred to the A. M. U. Aligarh along with the donation. However all such discrepancies have been mentioned in the catalogue to avoid any confusion by scholar if he happens to compare the list. I hope that this catalogue of MSS will further reveal the matter of the manuscripts to the scholars at large. Apart from the 2nd part of the Persian manuscripts in hand, the other volume of Arabic manuscripts belonging to this collection and containing 814 manuscripts is also complete and ready for press. The manuscripts of Habib Ganj Collection in Urdu language are not to be compared with the large No. manuscripts of Arabic & Persian languages. Neverthless it makes a noteworthy collection of manuscripts in Urdu and is planned to be published as separate volume. The library during the last few years has also published the catalogues of four collections. Since each of these collections is not large enough to be published in separate volumes by language, hence their catalogues were published in one volume in consolidated forms. I have pleasure that this work was properly carried out with the arrival of Janab Sayyid Hamid, former Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, by utilising the services of Mr. S. Mahmood Hasan Qaisar, a former Assistant Librarian manuscripts. I would request Mr. Sayyid Hashim Ali the present Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh to pay his kind attention to this important work by giving all possible facilities. M. H. DEDICATED TO MY PARENTS CONTENTS PREFACE 1-IV INTRODUCTION 1-10 CHAPTER-I : DEVELOPMENT OF FIQH LITERATURE 11-2 5 IN THE SUB-CONTINENT CHAPTER-II : TRANSLATION OF ARABIC, PERSIAN AND 26-43 ENGLISH WORKS CHAPTER-III • ORIGINAL WORKS 44-125 CHAPTER-IV . BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE IMPORTANT 126-180 WORKS BIBLIOGRAPHY 181-184 GLOSSARY I-VIII (I) PREFACE Selection of topic for my dissertation was guided by many factors and considerations. Among them, the foremost was the idea that a comprehensive bibliographical dictionary of fiqh literature in India in the recent times should be prepared for it would not only be helpful in providing an indicator of the intellectual potential of the Muslim Intelligenstia of the Indo-Pak subcontinent, but also a guide to the young and experienced researchers alike for the location of the relevant material. The study of nature of survey, and as such does not warrant or pre-suppose a critical or analytical examination of the Urdu Fiqh literature in India. Nevertheless, it provides an insight into the juridical mind of muslim India, besides opening a window to the academic awakening of the Muslim Ulama and Fuqaha of the country. It is presented with the hope that some serious scholars would utilize the accumulated information for deeper studies on the subject, apart from enriching it from bibliographical point of view.
