Sports Wednesday, June 5, 2019 15 News in brief Roy, Archer & Ahmed fined for breaching ICC code LONDON: Jason Roy and Jofra Archer have each been fined 15 percent of their match fees for incidents during England’s World Cup defeat by Pakistan at Trent Bridge. The International Cricket Council found opener Roy had breached level one of its code of conduct, using an audible obscenity after a misfield during Pakistan’s innings. Fast bowler Archer was found guilty of dissent towards an umpire’s decision following a wide delivery. Both players have also had one demerit point added to their records. Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed was fined 20 percent of his fee, and his teammates 10 percent, for a minor over-rate offence. Pakistan won Monday’s match by 14 runs after setting England a target of 349. It was an occasionally fractious encounter, with the umpires warning England skipper Eoin Morgan about his side throwing the ball in on the bounce and later issuing the same reminder to Sarfaraz. The tactic is often used to scuff up the ball and promote reverse swing. England batsman Jos Buttler appeared to take a look at the ball on his walk back to the pavilion after his knock of 103 came to an end. English crowds “stupid” to boo Warner, says manager MELBOURNE: English crowds are “stupid” to jeer David Warner at the Cricket World Cup as it will only fire him up, the Australian batsman’s manager James Erskine has said. Warner, who has returned to the side following a 12-month ban for ball-tampering, was Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Pradeep (right) celebrates with teammates after taking the wicket of Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan for two runs during the booed by the crowd during Australia’s opening match against Pakistan in Bristol but struck an 2019 Cricket World Cup group stage match at the Sophia Gardens Stadium in Cardiff, south Wales, on Tuesday.

  • Wave of Stabbings Shake Israel and the West Bank
SUBSCRIPTION SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2015 THULHIJJA 26, 1436 AH No: 16663 Tunisian Violent Blatter fights democracy Muslims told ban amid group wins to leave FIFA Peace Prize7 Australia12 turmoil47 Wave of stabbings shake Israel and the West Bank Min 26º 150 Fils Revenge attack injures two Palestinians, two Arab Israelis Max 38º JERUSALEM: A fresh wave of stabbings shook Israel and the West Bank yesterday, including a suspected revenge attack by a Jewish suspect that wounded two Palestinians and two Arab Israelis. Attacks also continued against Israelis and Jews, with a Palestinian stabbing a policeman near a West Bank settlement before being shot dead by the victim, who was lightly wounded. A Jewish 16-year-old was lightly wounded in a new stabbing in Jerusalem by an 18-year-old Palestinian suspect, who was arrested. In the assault by a Jew, the assailant aged about 20 was arrested and told police he carried out the attack in the southern Israeli city of Dimona because “all Arabs are terrorists”. The victims suffered light to moderate wounds. It marked the first such attack against Palestinians after at least 11 stabbings that have targeted Israelis or Jews since Saturday, killing two of them. Later, a woman was shot after a stabbing attempt in northern Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quickly condemned the stab- bings by the Jewish suspect, a sign of concerns it could trigger further violence. Palestinians have also rioted in annexed east Jerusalem and the West Bank in recent days, with the unrest raising fears of a wider uprising or even a third intifada.

Defying Marginalization: Emergence of Women’s Organizations and the Resistance Movement in Pakistan: A Historical Overview By Rahat Imran1 and Imran Munir2 Abstract In the wake of Pakistani dictator General-Zia-ul-Haq’s Islamization process (1977-1988), the country experienced an unprecedented tilt towards religious fundamentalism. This initiated judicial transformations that brought in rigid Islamic Sharia laws that impacted women’s freedoms and participation in the public sphere, and gender-specific curbs and policies on the pretext of implementing a religious identity. This suffocating environment that eroded women’s rights in particular through a recourse to politicization of religion also saw the emergence of equally strong resistance, particularly by women who, for the first time in Pakistan’s history, grouped and mobilized an organized activist women’s movement to challenge Zia’s oppressive laws and authoritarian regime.
