Nathan Chen (USA), Keiji Tanaka (JPN) and Boyang Jin (CHN) are the top qualifiers in the Men’s after winning their two events. Adian Pitkeev (RUS), Alexander Petrov (RUS) and Ryuju Hino (JPN) have reached the Final as well. Chen and the two Russian skaters will compete in their first Final. The substitutes are: Mikhail Kolyada (RUS), He Zhang (CHN), Shoma Uno (JPN). Evgenia Medvedeva (RUS) and Polina Edmunds (USA) lead the Ladies standings with two victories on the circuit. Estonia hosts the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships for the first time, but has hosted the ISU European Figure Skating Championships in 2010. 163 skaters from 42 ISU members have been entered for the Championships. Following a decision of the ISU congress in summer 2012, no preliminary rounds are skated, but participants need to have achieved a total element minimum score for both Short and Free Program. All skaters compete in the Short Program/Short Dance and the top 24 single skaters, top 16 Pairs and top 20 Ice Dance teams proceed to the Free Skating/Free Dance. Overview of the top contenders Competition in the Men’s event will be tight with the participants of the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final and returning medalists. ISU Junior Grand Prix Final Champion Shoma Uno (JPN) travels with a seasons best of 256.45 points, achieved at the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, to Tallinn. Winter-Universiade im russischen Krasnojarsk sind auch die beiden Medaillenhoffnungen Katharina Müller und Tim Dieck erstmals auf dem Eis gefordert gewesen. Die Studentin an der Uni Bochum und der Student an der HS Fresenius sicherten sich im Eistanz-Kurzprogramm 62.68 Punkte. Damit liegen die Vierten der letzten Universiade vor der morgigen, abschließenden Kür auf Platz fünf und in Schlagdistanz zu den Top-3. „Unser Ziel war und ist es, zwei saubere Programme zu laufen. Und natürlich wollen wir noch für die Medaille kämpfen“, sagte Katharina Müller nach Teil eins ihres Wettkampfs. Die in Russland geborene Athletin fügte zudem an, dass eine bessere Punktzahl durchaus möglich gewesen wäre, wenn man nicht mit Startnummer eins den Wettbewerb hätte eröffnen müssen: „So wissen die Punktrichter natürlich nicht, wie sie das erste Paar einzuschätzen haben. Das war jetzt eigentlich für uns nicht so ein Problem, nur leider hat es sich aber so ausgewirkt.“ Außerdem gab die Deutsche Vizemeisterin kritisch zu, dass das Duo bei Müllers Schwächeelement einen kleinen Stopp drin hatte: „Der hat uns knapp 1,5 Punkte gekostet, wenn nicht sogar noch mehr. Da hat mir leider die Konzentration gefehlt.“ Aus diesem Grund sei das eingespielte Tanzpaar „mittelmäßig zufrieden, denn der Rest war eigentlich gut und sehr sauber. Es ist zwar schwer, jetzt noch an die Medaille ranzukommen, aber wir geben nicht auf. Das wird ein spannender Tag morgen“, so die 23-Jährige abschließend. Mit 71.46 Punkten liegen die beiden Russen Betina Popova und Sergey Mozgov, die seit letztem Jahr von der Olympiazweiten von 1998 Anjelika Krylova trainiert werden, in Führung.
