    ISSN: 2519-1268 Issue 9 (Summer 2019), pp. 59-87 DOI: 10.6667/interface.9.2019.86 Russia/Russians on Ice: Imagined Identity and Cross-cultural Communication in Yuri!!! on ICE tien-yi chao National Taiwan University Abstract Yuri!!! on ICE (2016; 2017) is a Japanese TV anime featuring multinational figure skaters com- peting in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. The three protagonists, including two Russian skaters Victor Nikiforov, and Yuri Purisetsuki (Юрий Плисецкий), and one Japanese skater Yuri Katsuki (勝生勇利), engage in extensive cross-cultural discourses. This paper aims to explore the ways in which Russian cultures, life style, and people are ‘glocalised’ in the anime, not only for the Japanese audience but also for fans around the world. It is followed by a brief study of Russian fans’ response to YOI’s display of Russian memes and Taiwanese YOI fan books relating to Russia and Russians in YOI. My reading of the above materials suggests that the imagined Russian identity in both the official anime production and the fan works can be regarded as an intriguing case of cross-cultural communication and cultural hybridisation. Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford (CAN) strike gold Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford of Canada came from second place in the Short Program to strike the Pairs gold. China’s Wenjing Sui/Cong Han earned the silver medal and Aljona Savchenko/ Bruno Massot of Germany captured the bronze medal in their debut as a team at the World Championships. Duhamel/Radford put out a flawless performance to “Hometown Glory”, nailing a triple twist, side by side triple Lutz, throw quadruple Salchow, triple toe-double toe-double toe combination, a throw triple flip as well as four level-four elements. He kept a blog for icenetwork from the event, his first international competition since the Sochi Winter Olympics. Saturday, Sept. 27 Today was officially the conclusion of the Nebelhorn Trophy. The ladies free skate kicked off the day, and both Mariah Bell and Gracie Gold skated beautiful programs. Mariah finished her first senior event in fifth, and Gracie brought home the bronze for Team USA! The dance event began shortly after the ladies finished. I can't even put into words how breathtaking both Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean­Luc Baker, and Madison Chock and Evan Bates' programs were. Nathan Chen (USA), Keiji Tanaka (JPN) and Boyang Jin (CHN) are the top qualifiers in the Men’s after winning their two events. Adian Pitkeev (RUS), Alexander Petrov (RUS) and Ryuju Hino (JPN) have reached the Final as well. Chen and the two Russian skaters will compete in their first Final. The substitutes are: Mikhail Kolyada (RUS), He Zhang (CHN), Shoma Uno (JPN). Evgenia Medvedeva (RUS) and Polina Edmunds (USA) lead the Ladies standings with two victories on the circuit. Alexandra Proklova (RUS), Karen Chen (USA), Maria Sotskova (RUS) and Serafima Sakhanovich (RUS) are the other qualifiers. All Ladies advanced to the Final in their international junior debut season.     2019 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships January 13 – 20, 2019 Saint John, New Brunswick A not-for-profit organization, Skate Canada/Patinage Canada is the oldest and largest figure skating organization in the world and is recognized by the Government of Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) as the governing body for the sport of figure skating in Canada. Skate Canada/Patinage Canada is dedicated to creating a nation of skaters both recreationally and competitively. Skate NB / Patinage NB is the governing section in New Brunswick and is comprised of 35 clubs organized into regions. Region 4 encompasses Saint John, Quispamsis and Sussex. The 2019 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships will be hosted by Region 4 from January 13-20, 2019, at Harbour Station and QPlex, respectively. The championships will feature approximately 250 of the country’s best skaters in the men, women, pairs, and dance disciplines, competing in three levels: senior, junior, and novice. This will be the first national championships following Canada’s very successful 2018 Olympic Winter Games. It is expected that 2018 World Bronze medalists and Olympians, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, will be competing in Saint John in senior dance. Additionally, Olympians Gabrielle Daleman, Keegan Messing, Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier and the next cohort of Canadian skating talent will be featured. The pre-eminent national championships will see athletes vie for spots on the Skate Canada National Team and the Canadian teams that will compete at the 2019 ISU World Figure Skating Championships, 2019 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships and 2019 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships.
