Please Make Check Payable to Temple Beth El 3 President's Message Once again, I find myself writing the KOL article. I asked Sonya what I should write about. I then commented... “No one is interested in what I write and they probably don’t read it anyway”.

She kind of looked at me funny. She gave me the quiet, bossy, narrowed eye look she gives our kids. Not only do people read it she said, many people prefer to read it in print than electronically! Sonya and her mom Muriel still remember receiving and reading the monthly version of their synagogue’s bulletin, the Shomer.

The Kol is a tradition. There are certain things that are expected; the rabbi's message, the cantor's message, the education director's message, and even the president’s message. Equally important are the blurbs about each upcoming B’nai Mitzvah. There are the pages memorializing donations. And then, there are the advertisements. It's like a newspaper - everyone has their favorite parts.

If you have a favorite part of the KOL that means you are interested in what is going on at TBE. With that in mind, I ask that you participate in the running of our shul by joining a committee. I am all too familiar with the frequent grumblings about joining a committee. “I hate meetings”, or “I don’t have time for this.” Nevertheless, I ask that you identify a committee that interests you and donate your time. TBE needs new people joining committees so that we can get new perspectives and ideas. I have found the experience rewarding. I mean, I started a while ago being on the membership committee and now I am the President!

Please call the office or stop in to ask about the many committees we have at TBE and ask to join one. One need not read any or all of the KOL. But, we all know that it comes regularly. And that is a comfort. Even if you don't come to TBE regularly, a little piece comes to your mailbox quarterly.

Seth Charatz President

For highlights of the Minutes of the Board of Trustees Meeting, please go to tberochester.org. From the Desk of the Senior Rabbi Pesach, A Family Feast I would like to provide a personal overview of our new Limmud Program.

History teaches us that on the tenth of Nisan, the head of each household took a lamb for sacrifice. Egyptians worshipped this lamb as a deity. The Israelites living in Egypt kept the lamb for four days in their homes; and, on the fourteenth of the month they sacrificed it and sprinkled its blood on the lintel of the doorposts of their homes. They faced the danger of death for the sake of following God’s commandments. Our ancestors proved to be worthy of becoming God’s people. Only then Israel did come to birth as a nation. That first celebration of Passover was a unique moment in their lives and at the same time it was a family event. The paschal lamb was to be consumed as a family meal. The lamb was to be roasted whole, and no bone was to be broken-rules symbolic of family unity, the only sure basis for national unity and strength.

In the long night of the exile, the celebration of Passover continued to be a family feast. The Seder night was an object of lesson for all, especially for the young.

If we want the night of Passover will continue to be a great lesson for children and adults.

Will Israel ever forget the Matzah and Haroset - symbols of bitter servitude and sweet freedom? The roast bone and the roast egg - memorials of the Korban Pesach and Korban Hagigah? Will Israel ever forget the cup of Elijah emblem of hope to Israel?

As long as Pesach remains a family experience, our Judaism will not be deprived of its beauty and strength. We must take the initiative and invest in a meaningful Passover experience.

Hag Kasher V’Sameach Rabbi Leonardo Bitran

To read more of Rabbi Bitran's' letter please go to: www.tberochester.org/senior-rabbi 4 With Hazzan Leubitz's recent announcement of his plan to retire at the end of June 2018, the Temple family has an opportunity to explore what it envisions for the future. Towards that goal, Seth Charatz, President of Temple Beth El, has asked Shoshana Germanow and Martin Presberg to lead the process to take a look at ourselves, assess our needs, and create a vision for the future. Shoshana and Martin anticipate a two-phase process involving exploration and planning in Phase I and implementation of the plan in Phase 2.

A preliminary gathering of members was held on March 5 to solicit member participation and input in the process. As follow-up, work groups will be developed to consider questions such as: What are current models in other congregations and communities? What is the TBE Community looking for in a Hazzan or Musical Leader? How should we go about collecting the views of individual members? How should we this process? How will we keep the congregation informed of these activities?

Your comments and suggestions are welcome. A designated email has been set up for your convenience at inspiration@tberochester. org, or you may contact co-chairs Shoshana (585) 749-1405 or Martin (585) 794-3509 directly.

TO SELL YOUR HAMETZ The Torah prohibits the ownership of hametz (flour, food or drink made from the prohibited species of leavened grain: wheat, oats, barley, rye or spelt) during Pesah. Ideally we burn or remove all hametz from our premises which may be effected by donations to a local food pantry. In some cases, however, this would cause prohibitive financial loss. In such cases, we arrange for the sale of the hametz to a non-Jew and its repurchase after Pesah. You can arrange for this sale of your Hametz by sending the following form to Rabbi Bitran at the Temple office no later than Friday, April 7th.

It is customary to include a donation to provide Maot Hittin funds for Passover supplies for the needy. Please make checks payable to Temple Beth El which will contribute to Maot Hittin on everyone’s behalf.

Dear Rabbi Bitran: Please act as my agent for this sale of any hametz on my premises.

5 Youth Education Corner On a Saturday night in the middle of February, our Halutzim (3rd-5th grade) and Kadima (6th-8th grade) youth groups joined together for a pool party at the JCC. Towards the beginning of the program, we held a beautiful Havdallah service. Most of the children stayed in the pool while a few came out of the water to hold the ritual items. What made this such a beautiful service was the full participation by all the children at the program. They were close to one another, many with their arms around each other as they sang the prayers.

A parent chaperone at the event admitted that Havdallah is not something that they usually do at home and asked how they know it so well. It was a wonderful opportunity to share with that parent two points: First, while Havdallah is a ceremony that usually takes place as soon as 3 stars are seen in the sky on a Saturday evening as it marks the separation between Shabbat and the rest of the week, we learn in the Talmud that if it isn’t done at that point, we can do Havdallah any time before Tuesday. Second, every Sunday morning in Limmud we gather all of the children in Kindergarten through 7th grade together for Havdallah. Our children have learned Havdallah simply through doing the service every Sunday morning. In Limmud, it is a beautiful opportunity for our children to form relationships across the grades; younger children often sit together with older children and enjoy welcoming the week together.

Experiential learning is a key component in Limmud: TBE’s Youth Education Program and in our Youth Groups. Experiential learning combines learning through action with processing the experience afterword. Learning in this manner helps children to internalize the learning and helps to make it meaningful. While we do the Havdallah service each week, we also take time to discuss the meaning of the various components and allow the children to share how they find it meaningful. Havdallah is just one of many examples of the incorporation of experiential learning in our programs. Tzedakah projects, role playing scenes from the Torah and Jewish history, holiday celebrations and volunteering in the community are just a few other examples. With these experiences as a part of their Jewish education, our students are learning how to apply their knowledge. These experiences will stay with the students and will continue to be a source of pride.

6 Early Childhood Update My name is Mandi Warner, and I am the new Early Childhood Director. I came to Temple Beth El after spending ten wonderful years as a lead pre- kindergarten teacher at the Jewish Community Center, and four previous years teaching pre-kindergarten at a preschool in Victor. I have a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from SUNY Fredonia and a Master’s Degree in Early Literacy Education from St. John Fisher College.

I developed a passion for Jewish education during high school, where I spent all of my summers until I got engaged at Camp Sisol. Even throughout college, I was the Hebrew school teacher in Fredonia, and was able to guide my students from third grade through Bar and Bat Mitzvah.

Besides being a passionate Early Childhood Jewish educator, I am also the proud mother of a kindergartener and two pugs. I am very excited to begin this new chapter with Temple Beth El! EXCITED to Be joining the elite Group of KOSHER caterers at Temple Beth El

15 Passover Service Times During Passover Monday, April 10th: 7 am, minyan followed by the Siyum Bechorim, festive meal, and burning of hametz.

Tuesday & Wednesday, April 11th & 12th: Services at 9 am.

Thursday & Friday April 13th & 14th: Morning minyan at 7:15 am.

Shabbat, April 15th: Services at 9 am.

Sunday, April 16th: Vervices at 9 am

Monday & Tuesday, April 17th & 18th: Services at 9 am. Yizkor will be recited on the 18th.

PASSOVER INFORMATION Erev Pesah Siyum The sunrise to sunset ta'anit (fast) bekhorim (of the firstborn), which occurs on the day before Passover, is the only fast that applies to just a segment of the community: all males who are the firstborn children in their families (if the firstborn child is female, the first son born after her is not obligated).

There is a widely practiced exemption: On the principle that fasting is prohibited on a joyous occasion, Judaism allows for anyone who attends a religious feast to forego fasting. It is customary to hold a celebratory meal on the completion of study of a tractate of rabbinic literature, called a siyyum (conclusion). So the sages initiated the practice of studying the end of a tractate after morning services on Erev Pesah followed by a celebratory meal.

At 7:00 am Monday, April 10th, the firstborn in each family is invited to the Siyum B’khorim. Following the meal, there is an opportunity to burn your family’s remaining hametz in a bonfire in the TBE Garden.

Is It Kosher For Passover? Passover has its own special rules of kashrut. On Pesah, Jews are forbidden from owning or consuming hametz (flour, food or drink made from the prohibited species of leavened grain: wheat, oats, barley, rye or spelt).

Most Ashkenazic authorities have added the following foods (kitniyot) to the above list: rice, corn, millet, legumes (beans and peas; however, string beans are permitted). The Committee on Jewish Law and Standards has ruled unanimously that peanuts and peanut oil are permissible. Sephardic authorities permit the use of all of the above kitniyot.

16 Permitted Foods: A. The following foods require no kosher l’Pesah label when purchased before or during Passover: fresh fruits and eggs, fresh fish (whole or gutted), fresh or frozen kosher meat other than chopped meat, whole (unground)) spices and nuts, including whole or half pecans (not pieces), pure black, green, or white tea leaves or teabags, Nestea regular and decaffeinated unflavored tea, coffee (unflavored regular), baking soda and bicarbonate of soda.

B. The following items may be purchased before Pesah without a Pesah hekhsher but if bought during Pesah require a kosher l’Pesah label: white milk, 100% pure fruit juice, filleted fish, frozen fruit (with no additives), pure white sugar (with no additive), olive oil (extra virgin only), non-iodized salt, quinoa (with no additional ingredients).

C. The following products require reliable (“kosher l”pesah”) certification (regular rabbinic supervision is not sufficient), whether purchased before or during Pesah: all baked goods (matzah, Pesah cakes, matzah flour, farfel, matzfel meal, and any other products containing matzoh), herbal teas, canned tuna, wine, vinegar, liquor, decaffeinated coffee and tea, dried fruits, oils, frozen uncooked vegetables and all frozen processed foods, candy, chocolate-flavored milk, ice-cream, yogurt, cheeses, butter, and soda. Any processed food bought during Pesah must have a (“kosher l”Pesah”) certification.

D. Any detergents, cleaners, etc. which are not a foodstuff and which are not eaten, may be used for Pesah and do not require a special label. These items include: isopropyl alcohol, aluminum products, ammonia, coffee filters, baby oil, powder and ointment, bleach, charcoal, candles, contact paper, plastic cutlery, laundry and dish detergent, fabric softener, oven cleaner, paper bags, plates, wax paper, plastic wrap, polish, sanitizers, scouring pads, stain remover, and bottled water with no additives.

E. Medicines: Prescription medicines are permitted. Non-prescription pills and capsules are permitted, for liquid medications, check with your rabbi.

For a more complete Passover guide prepared by the Rabbinical Assembly which includes guidelines for koshering a kitchen, please visit: rabbinicalassembly.org/pesah-guide.

Bedikat Hametz One of the required holiday ceremonies is Bedikat Hametz, searching for leaven. On the night before the first seder, Sunday, April 9th, we conduct a candle-lit search through our home to ensure that no hametz is still present. It is a brief ceremony in which the entire family can and should participate.

1. Make sure that all hametz has been removed or locked away with the exception of what will be needed for the morning.

2. Carefully hide some crumbs of bread. This is to insure that the blessing and the ceremony will not be performed in vain.

3. Take a candle, a feather or brush, and a box or cloth for the crumbs, and recite this blessing: Baruch Ata Adonai, Eloheynu Melekh haolam asher kidshanu b’mitzvotav v’tsivanu al biur hametz. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the Universe, who has sanctified us with the commandments and commanded us to remove all leaven.

4. Perform the search and gather up all the crumbs. Tie them in a bundle which will be burned the next morning. Feel free to (safely) burn it on your own, or use the bonfire at Temple Beth El following morning minyan.

5. Recite the following: All manner of leaven which is in my possession, that I have not seen or removed shall be annulled and void of any ownership and considered as the dust of the earth. (The Aramaic for this can be found in the front of your Haggadah.).

6. On Monday, April 10th, at or before 10:00 am, burn the leaven and recite the formula below: All manner of leaven which is in my possession, that I have seen or not seen, that I have removed or not removed, that I have destroyed or not destroyed shall be annulled and void of my ownership and considered as the dust of the earth. (The Aramaic for this can be found in the front of your Haggadah.)
