My broad purpose is to help enable the whole evangelical Church (both in the East and in the West, including evangelicals within Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, as well as evangelical Protestants) to move toward a fuller understanding of Christian theology, and thus toward more powerful ways of proclaiming the message of Christ today. My contribution to this broad purpose is to help Christians on both sides of the Atlantic learn from the valid theological insights of the patristic period, so that we may incorporate these insights consistently into our own biblical interpretation, theology, and proclamation. Among these insights, the one that dominates my attention is the intimate relation between the life of God as a fellowship of three persons, the work of those three persons in redemption, and Christian life as a participation by grace in the fellowship the persons of the Trinity have by nature. -

NOTES A NEW STUDY OF THEODORE OF MOPSUESTIA M. Robert Devreesse has devoted himself for many years to the study of Theodore of Mopsuestia, and his devotion has borne fruit in a number of published texts and periodical articles. The bishop of Mopsuestia is a mys terious and intriguing figure. Highly esteemed by his contemporaries, he was condemned as a heretic 125 years after his death. His works, as those of a heretic, have mostly perished; and he has borne the reputation, for 1400 years, of the father of Nestorianism, the patron of Pelagianism, and the first rationalist interpreter of the Bible. Must we conclude, Devreesse asks, that his contemporaries had lost all Christian sense? To solve the problem, there has been nothing but fragments of his works, the Acts of the Fifth Ecumenical Council, and the judgments, intensely partisan one way or the other, of his defenders and attackers. Devreesse does not offer the present work as a definitive study,1 but rather as a recapitulation of the work done by himself and others in recent years. The question he asks here is: Did Theodore sustain the errors at tributed to him? And how did the balance of opinion finally turn and remain fixed against him? Recent discoveries of the works of Theodore, in the study of which Devreesse has been prominent, have cast new light on the problem; of special importance are Theodore's commentary on the Gospel of St. John, his catechetical homilies, and extensive fragments of his commentaries on the Psalms and on Genesis. Bilaniuk SCYTHIAN MONKS AND THE CHRISTIAN WEST Because of a pervading lack of attention to the present topic, secondary literature is fragmentary. Consequently, one must find primary sources with• out guidance. Furthermore, Eastern European Church history is often pres• ented in many highly stereotyped forms - one must learn how they can be appreciated , or understood. For instance, it is customary to assert: "ex oriente lux, ab occidente lex." 1 As we shall see, the second part of this saying is very inexact. Such a maxim is best left in the realm of folk-knowledge, and is of very little use for scholarly work. The difficulty begins with Scythian historical geography. If one glances through today's historical atlases, one is amazed at the grave inconsistencies, contradictions and omissions. Some reputable atlases do not even mention Scythia, while others extend its boundaries over all of Eastern Europe. There is one recent atlas2 which places the outer boundaries of the Scythian sphere (7th to 3rd centuries B.C.) from along the River Prut (Pryetos), past the River Dnister (Tiras) to the sources of the Boh River (Hypanis); thence eastward all the way to the Don River, thence southward to the Caucasus Mountains, and then westward again to the north-east shore of the Black Sea. However the same atlas mistakenly places Scythia Minor in Crimea and part of the adjacent mainland (about equal in size to the peninsula). This however was Tauridic Scythia, whereas the Roman Province of Scythia was located on the shores of the Black Sea from the estuary of the Dnister River, southward, past the mouth of the Danube River (lstros). -

Pelagianism in the Christian Sources from 431 to the Carolingian Period (II) 16:00 - 18:30 Friday, 23rd August, 2019 Room 6 Presentation type Workshop 224 Baptismal Exorcism as Proof of Original Sin : the Legacy of Augustine’s Liturgical Argument in the Early Medieval West Matthieu Pignot Université de Namur, Namur, Belgium Abstract In the wake of the Pelagian controversy, Augustine of Hippo repeatedly referred to liturgical practices as arguments to promote his views on original sin. A particularly prominent argument in his polemical writings, repeated with great insistence in his controversy against Julian of Eclanum, is that the rites of exorcising and blowing at infants at baptism would provide proof of the necessity of cleansing them from original sin. This paper traces the destiny of this argument after Augustine’s death. First, it demonstrates how it was soon reused by Prosper of Aquitaine in his Auctoritates de gratia Dei, which were later transmitted together with Celestine's letter 21, and borrowed and copied in a number of Western sources, in particular in the letter of the Deacon Peter and other Scythian monks to African bishops exiled in Cagliari in the early sixth century, in a late antique Latin pseudo-Chrysostom homily from the Morin collection and in Bede's commentary on First Samuel. Second, it shows the use of Augustine's argument in renewed debates against allegedly Pelagian views in the works of pope Gelasius I, and in a synthesis on the catechumenate written by the deacon John in a letter sent to the aristocrat Senarius. This paper sheds light on Augustine’s legacy and the signifiance of his intermediary Prosper of Aquitaine, and leads us to reflect on the continuity of debates on infant baptism and original sin long after the official condemnation of Pelagianism. -

Pelagianism in the Christian Sources from 431 to the Carolingian Period (I) 16:00 - 18:30 Thursday, 22nd August, 2019 Room 6 Presentation type Workshop [No author data] Discussant: Victoria Escribano Paño It is generally assumed that the anti-Pelagian pronouncements by Popes Innocent I (416) and Zosimus (418), the council of Carthage of 1 May 418, and Emperor Honorius (418) set down, once and for all, the boundaries between the “Imperial-Catholic orthodoxy” and the “Pelagian heterodoxy”. Yet, there is enough evidence that long after 418, and even after 431 (Council of Ephesus), these boundaries remained a matter of discussion. Although fully integrated into the Christian heresiological discourse, “Pelagianism” remained a shifting concept employed to denigrate and to exclude from Christianity a wide range of practices and beliefs, some (but not all) of them related to the doctrinal issues discussed between 411-431. This workshop aims at analyzing the presence of Pelagian themes and the uses of the heresiological category of “Pelagianism” in the Western and Eastern Christian sources from between c. 431 and the Carolingian period. 289 Honorius, Flavius Constantius and anti-Pelagian legislation (418) M.
