Duplication and Diversification in the APETALA1/FRUITFULL Floral

Irish Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut 06520-4108 Manuscript received March 21, 2003 Accepted for publication June 11, 2003 ABSTRACT Phylogenetic analyses of angiosperm MADS-box genes suggest that this gene family has undergone multiple duplication events followed by sequence divergence. To determine when such events have taken place and to understand the relationships of particular MADS-box gene lineages, we have identified APETALA1/FRUITFULL-like MADS-box genes from a variety of angiosperm species. Our phylogenetic analyses show two gene clades within the core eudicots, euAP1 (including Arabidopsis APETALA1 and Antirrhinum SQUAMOSA) and euFUL (including Arabidopsis FRUITFULL). Non-core eudicot species have only sequences similar to euFUL genes (FUL-like). The predicted protein products of euFUL and FUL- like genes share a conserved C-terminal motif. In contrast, predicted products of members of the euAP1 gene clade contain a different C terminus that includes an acidic transcription activation domain and a farnesylation signal. Sequence analyses indicate that the euAP1 amino acid motifs may have arisen via a translational frameshift from the euFUL/FUL-like motif. The euAP1 gene clade includes key regulators of floral development that have been implicated in the specification of perianth identity. However, the presence of euAP1 genes only in core eudicots suggests that there may have been changes in mechanisms of floral development that are correlated with the fixation of floral structure seen in this clade. -

PEPEROMIA Peperomia acuminata 'Variegata' lc: mottled and thickly striped cream to light green and ochre. ph: https://www.glasshouseworks.com/tropicals-and-houseplants/tropical-p/peperomia-acuminata-variegata Peperomia (affin. albovittata?) 'Peppermill' is a delightful little plant, suitable for small containers and terraria. Unlike P. albovittata and 'Piccolo Banda' it differs in 1) tiny leaves of 1.25-1.75cm wide and long, 2) rotund or very rounded shape, suborbicular, rarely ovate, 3) markings a dark, dusky red to purple (rarely brownish) on a bright lime green, P. albovittata being more a dark brown on a silvery-green to silver bade, and 4) never showing silver markings at any time of development or in any climate. We are unable to determine it's origin. I found a plant from a growing at the local farmer's market but it was unlabeled and they had no idea as to the name or origin. The areas over the veins can develop a rich rusty color but my plants have been uniformly a dusky purplish-red. Peperomia albovittata 'Piccolo Banda'. The leaf is less round, larger, and the markings less red than what we know of the similar 'Peppermill'. -

The survey was accompanied by a collection of voucher specimens enumerates 464 plant species belonging to 334 genera under 117 families from the forest range. The survey has confirmed 31 threatened forest species from this area along with many near threatened plant species. Keywords: flora; vascular plants; reserve forest; threatened plants; Kaptai Introduction Bangladesh is a small country, enriched with high plant diversity, since it lies in a transition of two mega-biodiversity hotspots, viz, Indo-Himalayas and Indo-Chinese (Nishat et al., 2002; Khan, 2003). Near about 5,700 species of angiosperms with, 3 species of gymnosperms, 29 orchids 68 woody legumes, 130 fibers yielding plants, 500 medicinal plants and 1,700 pteridophytes have been recorded so far (Islam, 2003). However,
