4 1.EARLYLIFE

1.1.IntroductionofDianaFrancesSpencer,herfamilybackground, childhoodandteenageyears

Diana Frances Spencer was born on 1 July 1961 at Park House near Sandringham, .ShewastheyoungestdaughterofthethenViscountandViscountessAlthorp, nowthelateEarlSpencerandthelateHon.MrsFrancesShandKydd, daughterofthe 4thBaronFermoy.TheparentsdidnotmakemuchofDiana´sbirthbecauseitruined their expectations of having a son. Luckily, the birth of Charles, Diana´s brother, in 1964cameuptotheseexpectations.

Dianahadahappychildhooduntilherparents´divorcein1969.Diana´sfather,Lord Althorp, who was fourteen years older than his wife, liked a peaceful, rural life in a countryhouseandenjoyedplayingwithhischildreneveryeveningbeforetheywentto bed. With the birth of his son, Lord Althorp recaptured his lost selfconfidence, and knowledge of having finally a longdesired heir made him as happy and satisfied as neverbefore.Onthecontrary,Diana´smotherstartedtofeelboredandoppressedinher marriage. She married very young, gave birth to four children and the monotonous familylifeseemedordinaryanddepressingtoher.Shewasayoungwomansighingfor adventure and extraordinary experience. She was only thirty years old and wanted to leadalivelysociallifewherevisitingpartiesandtheatreswastheorderoftheday. In 1967,Diana´smotherfellinlovewithPeterShandKyddandleftherhusbandandfour childreninordertolivewithhernewloverinLondon.Diana´soldersisters,Sarahand Jane, werecrushedbytheseparationoftheirparents, butDianabeingonlysixyearsold at that time did not much realize the consequences of the failure of her parents´ marriage.

Duringherparents´fiercedivorceoverLadyAlthorp´sadulterywithPeterShandKydd, Diana´s mother sued forcustody of her children.Thanks to Lady Althorp´s mother´s testimonyagainstherdaughterduringthetrial,LordAlthorpachievedagreatsuccess whenallchildrenwereplacedinhiscustody.Atthattime,thiswassomethingwholly extraordinaryinGreatBritain.Foralongtime,LadyAlthorpcouldnotreconcilewith thefactthatshehadbeendepictedasanunreliableandfrivolousmother.

He visited theatres, circuses, ZOOs, museums, and sport events regularly and his horizons broadened in a natural way. Diana´s lack of experience, contradictions in family background and solitude in childhoodwerecausesofproblemsatthebeginningofhermarriagewiththePrinceof Wales.

8 2.THEROYALMARRIAGEANDTHEPRINCESSOFWALES´SNEWROLES

2.1.TheexpectationsoftheBritishmonarchy

ThePrinceofWales, beingstillsingleinhismidthirties, wasunderincreasingpressure of his surroundings to find a suitable bride, marry her and guarantee an heir to the monarchy.Inordertogaintheapprovalofhisfamilyandtheiradvisors, anypotential bridehadtohaveanaristocraticbackground, couldnothavebeenpreviouslymarried, shouldbeProtestant,and,preferably,avirgin.(en.wikipedia.org)ThePrinceofWales datedseveralyoungladies, includingSarahSpencer,LadyDianaSpencer´soldersister. Manyofthecandidateswerebeautiful, educated, andhighborn.ThePrinceofWales enjoyedtheircompanybuthewasneverentirelysurethathehadfoundtherightwoman worthholdingaroleofthefuturequeenandbeingstrongenoughtocarrytheonusof royaldutieswithhim.CamillaParkerBowles, thePrinceofWales´sformergirlfriend, did not fulfill the qualifications defined by the family, and had been dismissed as a potentialspousefortheheirtothethronesomeyearsbefore.Ironically,itwasveryMrs. Parker Bowles who helped the Prince of Wales select the 19yearold Lady Diana Spencerasapotentialbride.

Lady Diana´s family, the Spencers, had been close to the British Royal Family for decades.Hermaternalgrandmother,Ruth,LadyFermoy, wasalongtimefriend, anda ladyinwaitingtoQueenElizabeththeQueenMother.LadyDianaSpencerseemedto be an ideal candidate, fulfilling all of the qualifications. She was a young, unexperiencedwomanwithanuntarnishedreputation, aflawlesspastandappearedeasy to shape for the future role of the Princess of Wales. The Prince of Wales had to considerthechoiceverycarefully.Hewasafraidofmakingawrongdecisionbecause thechoicewastobelifelong, influencingtherestofhislifeandthewholemonarchy. Bearingthisinhismind, hehadonlyoneattemptandithadtobeappropriate.Forhim, as the head of Church of England, a divorce would be out of question. After a few months of wooing, Lady Diana Spencer accepted the Prince of Wales´s marriage proposal.On24February1981itwasofficiallyannouncedthatthePrinceofWaleswas tomarryLadyDianaSpencer.

The situation in the United Kingdom was not very favourable for arranging such a pompous event as a royal wedding. At that time, there were 3 million unemployed people, economyofthecountrywasindepressionandaterroristorganisationIRAwas active.Havingconsideredallthecircumstances, theRoyalFamilyfinallydecidednotto spoil the biggest and most important day in life of the Prince of Wales and not to begrudge him the pleasure of the wedding. Simultaneously, the wedding celebrations shouldservethepublictofeelproudabouttheircountryandletthemforgetabouttheir everydayworriesandtroublesatleastforawhile.

Itwasevidentthatthecouplehadtoguaranteeanheirtothethronetothemonarchy, preferablyamaleone.ThePrincessofWalesbecamepregnantsoonafterthewedding and the whole United Kingdom was in anticipation of an heir to the throne. DuringthePrincessofWales´spregnancy, everybodywonderedwhetherthebabywas

3.1.Thecausesfordivorce Althoughthemarriagemayhaveseemedtobehappyandworkinginanearlystage,it did not take for a long time when the first indications of disagreements between the Prince and Princess of Wales occured. Both, the Prince and Princess of Wales were awareofthefactthattheirmarriagedidnotheadfortherightdirectionandthatitwas notfulfillingtheroledeterminedbytheRoyalFamilyatthebeginningandexpectedby thepublic.Adissatisfactionwiththecourseof marriagewasapparentbutthecouple could not share their opinions on the causes of the troubles. Her interest in landmines was focused on the injuries they evocate, especially to children.InAugust1997shevisitedBosniawiththeLandmineSurvivorsNetworkand toured a minefield, in helmet and flak jacket. Amongthemostfrequentlycitedtheoriesbelongsthetheoryofaroyalplottogetridof Diana, Princess of Wales. The Royal Family is suspected to have ordered Diana, PrincessofWales´sassassinationwithBritishSecretServicesMI5orMI6.Twomain possible motives are presented. One of them was mentioned in Diana, Princess of Wales´sprediction–herdeathwouldmakethepathclearforPrinceCharlestomarry Mrs.CamillaParkerBowles.Thisdoesnotseemveryprobablebecauseafterthedeath ofDiana,PrincessofWalespeopleadoredherevenmorethanthroughoutherlifeand glorifiedherasamartyr.Thatbeingsupposed, theywouldhardlyacceptMrsCamilla ParkerBowlesasthePrinceofWales´snewspouse.DuringthePrinceofWales´sfirst marriage, thepublicopenlyprefferedDiana,PrincessofWalestoMrsCamillaParker Bowles.Theformerwasseenasavictimandthelatterasaninvaderandviolatortothe royalcouple´smarriage.

ItisalsohighlyunlikelythatthePrinceofWaleswouldhaveorderedDiana,Princessof Wales´s assassination. She was the mother of his sons and he knew very well how much they loved her. Another possible motive why the Royal Family could have been interested in Diana, PrincessofWales´sdeathisherallegedintentiontomarryDodiFayedandmoreoverto giveabirthtohischild.Afuturelikethiswasa´nightmare´forsomemembersofthe Royal Family as it would have discredited the monarchy. The relationship between Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Fayed was a thorn in Prince Philip´s flesh in particular.Itwasabsolutelyunacceptableforthe monarchythatthesuccessorstothe throne should have a Muslim stepfather or Muslim stepsiblings. ApotentialmarriageofDiana,PrincessofWaleswithDodiFayedhadalsooneaspect, moreorlessapoliticalone.TherumouristhatDodiFayedinfactdidnotloveDiana, Princess of Wales and he used her only as a means for being granted a British citizenship. An inquest of French authorities into the car accident started in the days after the accident.Itwasnecessarytohearoutallthewitnesses, gathertheevidences, analysethe testimonies, concludethecausesofaccidentanddenominatetheculprits.Itwasnoeasy task because many evidences were opposing each other and too many people were involvedintheaccident.
