Who is the man called Fox Evil? His 10 year-old son if the boy really is his Fox Evil and really is as old as ten thinks Evil is Fox's last name. Certainly the word fits his personality and his actions. From the beginning pages we want to know Fox's true identity; as the pages add up, Fox Evil want to know how he got to be as cruel and twisted as he is, and Fox Evil drives him. It is not until the very end of the book that we will learn Fox Evil answers, by which time Walters's sustained narrative tension will have stretched our nerves very thin indeed. Her relentlessly dark view is enough to make even a fan of the gothic and the noir long nostalgically for the innocence of a Miss Marple, or of an Inspector Wexford for Ruth Rendell, even writing as Barbara Vine, is not this dark. Shenstead Valley is in Dorset, so ideally located between wooded hills and the sea that its small collection of houses and cottages, clustered about Shenstead Manor, has become off-limits to all but the stubborn Fox Evil and the new rich. Most of the latter spend their weekdays in London, but a trouble-making few have chosen Shenstead for their retirement. The major available forms of recreation are the local hunt club, a little golf, and a lot of gossip the latter being of the lethal, not-so-idle variety.

  • Erskine Falls: a Crime Fiction Novel and Exegesis
Erskine Falls: a Crime Fiction Novel and Exegesis By CHRISTOPHER MALLON Student ID No: 983478X Dissertation submitted as fulfilment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy (Humanities) Swinburne University of Technology March 2020 Abstract This practice-led PhD consists of two elements – a crime fiction novel titled Erskine Falls, and an accompanying exegesis that critically situates the author’s creative practice and the production of the text. Drawing on the traditions of hardboiled detective fiction and noir crime fiction, the novel negotiates the spectrum between these two sub-genres and explores a world which questions the many modern articulations of masculinity. Erskine Falls is a contemporaneously-set novel that follows a private eye who investigates the case of a missing girl who is from the affluent resort town of Lorne, Victoria, Australia. As the private eye moves through Lorne’s world of seaside wealth and tourism, he is simultaneously coming to terms with the post-industrial changes in his own home town of Geelong and dealing with a tumultuous relationship with his deceased business partner’s wife. His investigation eventually leads him into an underground world of criminality that belies the smiling touristic face of Lorne. The exegesis reflexively explores key writerly choices and focuses on genre, masculinity, voice, and place. Building upon the hardboiled and noir crime fiction subgenres, the project seeks to examine how the traditional hardboiled voice and its masculinities are negotiated within a contemporary, post-industrial regional Australian space. Using a practice-led methodology, the exegesis reflexively aims to situate the novel in a contemporary world through the subgenres of hardboiled detective and noir crime fiction.

  • Southern Land, Hardened Heart: the Possibility of Australian Neon Noir
Southern Land, Hardened Heart: the possibility of Australian neon noir Christopher Przewloka Bachelor of Fine Arts (Creative Writing) Creative Writing and Literary Studies (Hons) Creative Industries Faculty Creative Writing and Literary Studies Discipline Queensland University of Technology Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2016 Keywords Neon noir, hard-boiled, crime writing, genre, craft, Australian fiction, creative writing, practice-led research. ii Abstract Much can be learnt from dwelling in the dark underbelly of society, and it is for such reasons neon noir crime fiction has become one of the most enduring ways of analysing our culture at large. Evolving from the hard-boiled private detective stories found in early pulp fiction magazines, neon noir offers violent narratives that vivisect the social, historical, and political landscape, often blurring the line between fact and fiction. Thus neon noir eschews the romanticism of the classic hard-boiled model, and embraces something far more subversive: populist novels driven by contemporary cultural analysis. Despite both literary and commercial success in North America, Australian authors have often shied away from wholly embracing the neon noir style. This is somewhat perplexing, as Australia has had a long and enduring relationship with all forms of crime writing, especially hard-boiled—the progenitor of neon noir. So why do we shy away from the neon noir style in Australia? What are the difficulties, considerations, and possibilities of localising the form? Do the conventions of the sub-genre shift when placed in an Australian setting? This practice-led thesis consists of an Australian neon noir novel entitled Coffin’s Reach, and a 50,000 word exegesis that accompanies the creative work.

ISSN 2411-9563 (Print) European Journal of Social Science August 2018 ISSN 2312-8429 (Online) Education and Research Vol 5 No 2 DOI: 10.2478/ejser-2018-0033 Open Access. © 2018 Manuela Svoboda and Petra Zagar-Sostaric. This is an open access article licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 4.0 License How much Artistic Freedom is permitted when it comes to Language? - Analysis of a Crime Novel Manuela Svoboda, PhD Lecturer of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Petra Zagar-Sostaric, PhD Lecturer of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka, Croatia Abstract In this article a closer look will be taken at the issue of inaccurately using a foreign language, i.e. German in this particular case, in a crime novel or thriller. Of course, in fiction the author has complete artistic freedom to invent and present things as he/she intends and it doesn`t necessarily have to be realistic or legitimate. But what happens when it comes to an existing language being quoted in fiction? For this purpose David Thomas’ thriller “Blood Relative – How well do you know the one you love?” is analysed regarding parts in which German quotes are used. As the plot is located partly in England and partly in former East Germany (GDR) and the protagonist’s wife is of German origin, direct speech, titles and names are used in German. Subsequently, they are translated into English by the author in order to be understood by the English reader. However, there are many grammar, spelling and semantic mistakes in these German expressions and common small talk quotes.
