1.1 Diana’sBirth

Charleswasundertheincreasingpressuretomarrynotonlybyhisfather(hismotherhas neverinterferedinherchildren’saffairs)butalsobyCamillawhowaspersuadedthatDi ana would not jeopardize her place in Charles’s heart. In fact she preferred Diana to Charles’sotheracquaitances.

Nevertheless, Diana adored Charles and in some way also Charles, whocalled her ‘My ShyDi’(Davies72),lovedDiana,althoughtheydifferedfromeachotherinmanyaspects. While Davies described this event as a “madeup story“ (69), Bradford broughttheevidence, thatthewomandefinitelywasnotDiana, butCamillaPar kerBowles(85).

There is also some discrepancy in these books connected with the flowers that Charles shouldhavesenttoDianaafterherarrivalfromAustralia, whereshe, accordingtoChar les’ssuggestion, spentsometimewithhermotherbeforetheirwedding. In Diana.APrin cessand HerTroubledMarriagethereisdescribedtheevent, howromanticCharlessenta hugebunchofflowerstoDiana(Davies70).Inthebook Diana Dianawaspersuadedthat themalodorousbouquetwasnotfromCharles, itwasjustaverytactfuldeepofsomebody fromtheoffice,becausetherewasnotamessage(Bradford90).

2.4 Marriage

“Charles was too old for his age, and Diana in her youth extremely immature“ 10 (Bradford112). Diana was always such a shy girl that during the school performances she was used to playingjustnonspeakingparts. Now,shewasinthecentreofattentionandshetriedto hideherrealfeelingsinpublic.So,herrolereallywasnoteasy.In Diana,HerTrueStory sheremembers, howshetriedtocopewiththejournalists:“I´vegotwhatmymotherhas got.Howeverbloodyyouarefeelingyoucanputonthemostamazingshowofhappiness. My mother is an expert at that and I´ve picked it up. It kept the wolves from the door”(Morton76). 4.3 MythorReality?

If anybody dies, there is always the tendency to present him or her to his or her best advantage.

But still there was something about Diana that the reporter of Sunday Times, Christina Lamb, inthebookbyBrianMacArthur Requiem: Diana,Princessof Wales called‘aura’. SheaccompaniedDianaduringtheirjourneyinAngolawiththeRedCrossorganization, where they were attending the patients who were suffering from very serious injuries becauseoflandmines:

ButDiananeverturnedherheadaway.Actualy, shewassurroundedby somethingthatIhadseenaboutNelsonMandelabefore–akindofaura, thankstoonepeoplewantedtobewithher.Shehadentirelysinceregift, the ability coming from heart: she managed to bring the will to the people who, from our point of view, were left just a few reasons for living 30 (Bradford341342). 37

Sometimes there were some doubts and speculations about Diana’sbehaviour inpublic, especiallywhenthemediawerepresent.Nowhereisthetangibleevidenceofhersincere attitude and empathy.”What this lady was performing, was not determined just for cameras”saysChristinaLambandremembersthesituation, when, whileattendinganother hospital and at the time when all the photographers had already left for their air conditionedhotelrooms, shewaswatchingDianawhodidnotnoticeatallifsomebody connected with newspaper was present. Similar incidents happened also later, when she treated her husband the same way (Bradford35).
