McKinley itself, framed by the railcar’s glass dome — a preview of the magnificence in store. Denali tops travelers’ wish lists for good reason. Even by Great Land standards, it’s impressive. Picture an immense massif rising 20,320 feet, its head in the clouds and its flanks rimmed by six million acres of wilderness. This is our playground for the next three days, and Holland America Line’s wilderness lodge, the McKinley Chalet Resort, offering the perfect balance of rustic and refined at the gates of Denali, is our elegant base camp. That first evening in our spacious mini-suite overlooking the river, we notice how quiet it is here. The sound of fragrant spruce whispering in the summer breeze is broken only by the call of a distant lone wolf. Wow. This is truly one of those rare places that can be called pristine. Barbara greets us at base camp center on Day 2, staging ground for the many park excursions, including today’s Tundra Wilderness Tour. Our lucky sightings: a grizzly sow and her cubs lumbering across the tundra. A herd of caribou grazing at Polychrome Pass. And thanks to a break in the clouds at Stony Hill Overlook, a clear view of Denali that takes our breath away. Day 3 at Denali is ours to design, and the options for the day are many. An ATV adventure? A Jeep® tour? A flightseeing tour? My husband and I choose a river rafting adventure down the Nenana River, whose Class II–IV rapids flow right past our lodge and challenge our team of paddlers just enough to be seriously fun. The frontier spirit lives on in Dawson City. So do tales of the wild and woolly days of the Klondike Wild West Gold Rush. In the summer of 1896, so the story goes, George Carmack and his “associates” Skookum Jim and Tagish Charlie struck gold in Bonanza Creek, a tributary of the Klondike Yu kon River.
