Blanket Approach to Vanuatu Knitted with love by P&O Cruises’ passengers, a bounty of blankets has been delivered to a Vanuatu hospital during Pacific Jewel’s recent visit to Port Vila. Passengers onboard the cruise line’s ships have been busy turning hundreds of Save the Children’s Born to Knit kits into warm blankets for newborn babies as part of a new partnership with the children’s organisation. Crew members from Pacific Jewel donated the blankets to the Vila Central Hospital maternity ward on behalf of the cruise line and its passengers. Deputy Cruise Director Alun Sullivan, who has been driving the program onboard Pacific Jewel, said it was a rewarding initiative for crew and passengers alike. “It’s a fantastic activity that unites our passengers and crew in a great mission – after all, who could resist knitting blankets for little babies? The highlight was seeing two sets of twins born within a few hours of one another wrapped up in blankets made on our ship,” said Melissa Yates, Pacific Jewel Administration and Revenue Director. Photo: Pacific Jewel crew member Janita van Niekirk, Save the Children Country Program Director Nichola Krey and Senior Nurse Pacific Jewel Liz Preston share blankets knitted by P&O Cruises passengers with a mother of twins at Vila Central Hospital.

Australian Club and Scottish House

Several of these Head Office buildings still exist in near original form and some of the companies that occupied these include the interstate passenger liner operators McIlwraith McEacharn Ltd, Huddart Parker Ltd and the Melbourne Steamship Company Ltd. These companies traditionally located their operations at the west end of the City of Melbourne with close proximity to the wharves along the Yarra River where all the ships from the company fleets were usually berthed. The buildings were generally located in the two city blocks divided by William Street and bordered by Collins Street, King Street, Flinders Street and Market Street, Melbourne. The largest survivor of the grand era of Australia’s coastal shipping industry is the former head office of McIlwraith McEacharn at Scottish House, 90-100 William Street, Melbourne. Scottish House was designed as an office block Burns Philip Building Sydney for the company in 1907 by prominent architect Charles D’Ebro. Our Three Month Long Holiday in Europe (Part 2) by Trevor & Dianne Chatterton

Our next destination was London for a 2 night stay before leaving on a 27 day tour of Europe with a group of 51, mostly all Aussies. The tour was enjoyable with the highlights being Italy and Switzerland. In Italy the Amalfi Coast was just spectacular. Over looking Positano was quite a sight while we were eating a delicious peach the size of a baseball. The Isle of Capri is another must see with its Blue Grotto. Rome presented time to see the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Vatican and other sights. Venice is another city to see with its extremely busy Grand Canal flanked by old buildings and towers. We enjoyed the Murano Glass Factory and St Marks Square. In Austria we were taken to Hitler’s Eagle Nest high up in the mountains. What an engineering marvel and the magnificent view. At Lucerne Switzerland we ventured to the top of Mt Pilatus (7,000 ft) by Gondola & Cable Car. You could see forever as the day was fine. On the way down we went on a Cog Railway and then a cruise on the lake. By the time we returned to London we were exhausted and only had one day before we set off on a 20 day tour of Great Britain. The weather had turned cold and this time there were only 39 people on the bus. A highlight was the Cliffs of Mahan and the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland. The climb up to the Blarney Stone was an experience, but we did not kiss the stone. Our tour guide was great. Again we were back in London with just one day before our flight to Venice. The hotel, Rialto, was on the Grand Canal next door to the famous Rialto Bridge. Painted pink it was a magnificent hotel with period furniture.
