But whether passengers will be allowed to disembark remained unclear. Calling the plight of those on board a "humanitarian situation," Holland America ON Wednesday evening made a last-ditch appeal to federal and local authorities to allow the Zaandam and Rotterdam cruise ships to disembark in Fort Lauderdale's Port of Everglades. "We appreciate the support of President Trump in resolving the humanitarian plight of our guests," the British-American cruise line said in a statement. " calls for

compassion and reason in the review and approval of our disembarkation plan by Florida officials." The appeal came hours after Gov. Ron DeSantis said his state was willing to accept Floridians on board the cruise ships. "My concern is that we have worked so hard to make sure we have adequate hospital space in the event of a Covid-19 surge, we wouldn't want those valuable beds to be taken because of the ," DeSantis said. 02 April, 2020: UPDATE on RCGS Resolute – it has now sunk a naval vessel. The Resolute had been heading north with no destination or ETA. RCGS Resolute arrived off the north coast of Trinidad late on March 25th and stopped overnight. On the morning of the 26th she rendezvoused with the tanker Kerkyra, out of Port of Spain, Trinidad, and presumably refueled. the ship then continued sailing when the ship suddenly began reporting that it was not under command on March 29 about 60 nautical miles off the north coast of Venezuela. the ship drifting at 1.knots less than 20 nautical miles off the uninhabited island of La Tortuga at 13:00 ET. Not under command is a navigational status indicating that the ship is unable to Maneuver in the water, and all vessels must keep clear. 9 nautical miles off La Tortuga island, and after several hours the ship began steaming again to the west giving Willemstad Curacao as the destination.

In a story that probably couldn’t get much weirder, it now appears the RCGS Resolute collided with and Sunk the Venezuelan Offshore patrol Vessel GC-23 Naiguata at 00:45 on the 30th. the ship gave Willemstad Curacao as its destination yesterday, and arrived this morning where it remains at anchor. The Venezuelan government issued a release which reads (via google translate) On March 30, 2020, at 00:45, the Coast Guard «Naiguatá» (GC-23), of the Bolivarian Navy, being in maritime patrol tasks of our territorial sea, to the northwest of La Tortuga Island; It was boarded (collided) by the passenger ship “Resolute”, (122 meters long and 8300 tons of displacement), with the Portuguese flag, at the time it was undergoing a maritime traffic control procedure, which caused damage of great magnitude and caused the anxiety of the aforementioned coastguard. The action of the ship «Resolute» is considered cowardly and criminal, since it did not attend to the rescue of the crew, in breach of the international regulations that regulate the rescue of life at sea. This ship is currently in the port of Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao, where it docked in the morning of today. Our immediate search and rescue work, together with the professional and courageous performance of our personnel, allowed the full rescue of the crew. The Venezuelan State undertakes the corresponding legal actions. Chávez lives!… The Homeland continues! Independence and Socialist Homeland! … We will live and win! Always loyal!… Traitors never!

In another statement, the Venezuelan government claims the ship was Illegally in Venezuelan waters. the statement reads (Again via google translate) Miraflores Palace, Caracas. – The head of state and

government of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro Moros, asked the Curaçao authorities for maximum collaboration in the investigations of the Portuguese-flagged ship that entered the jurisdictional waters of Venezuela illegally. “We ask for the greater collaboration of the maritime, civil, police and military authorities of Curaçao and we will maintain coordination,” said the national president, also denouncing that this ship, docked from the morning hours in the city of Willemstad, collided against the Coast Guard «Naiguatá» (GC-23), causing its collapse, which was described as an act of aggression and piracy. Last Monday after midnight, the passenger ship “Resolute”, measuring 122 meters long and 8,300 tons of displacement, reached Venezuelan waters, 7 miles from La Tortuga Island, activating the Strategic Operational Command for what that a Venezuelan coast guard ship set sail to board this vessel. For his part, the Minister of Popular Power for Defense, Vladimir Padrino López, explained that the Venezuelan vessel activated the protocols established in international treaties, where he was ordered to go to the port of Margarita. “Being escorted, he decided to ram the Bolivarian navy ship, which caused its sinking,” he said. The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Popular Power for Defense have initiated the corresponding formalities at the diplomatic and military levels, respectively, to clarify this case. However, the Venezuelan state authorities do not rule out the hypothesis that it is a ship that “was transporting mercenaries to attack military bases in Venezuela, unloading them out there on the high seas.”

Presidential Press / Andrelys Carrasquel Columbia Cruise Services has released a statement as well. It reads: “In the early morning hours of the 30th of March 2020 (local time), the cruise vessel RCGS RESOLUTE has been subject to an act of aggression by the Venezuelan Navy in international waters, around 13.3 nautical miles from Isla de Tortuga with 32 crew member and no passengers on board. When the event occurred, the cruise vessel RCGS RESOLUTE has already been drifting for one day off the coast of the island to conduct some routine engine maintenance on its idle voyage to its destination, Willemstad/ Curaçao. As maintenance was being performed on the starboard main engine, the port main engine was kept on standby to maintain a safe distance from the island at any time. Shortly after mid-night, the cruise vessel was approached by an armed Venezuelan navy vessel, which via radio questioning the intentions of the RCGS RESOLUTE’s presence and gave the order to follow to Puerto Moreno on Isla De Margarita. As the RCGS RESOLUTE was sailing in international waters at that time, the Master wanted to reconfirm this particular request resulting into a serious deviation from the scheduled vessel’s route with the company DPA. While the Master was in contact with the head office, gun shots were fired and, shortly thereafter, the navy vessel approached the starboard side at speed with an angle of 135° and purposely collided with the RCGS RESOLUTE. The navy vessel continued to ram the starboard bow in an apparent attempt to turn the ship’s head towards Venezuelan territorial waters. While the RCGS RESOLUTE sustained minor damages, not affecting vessel’s seaworthiness, it occurs that the navy vessel suffered severe damages while making contact with the ice-strengthened bulbous bow of the ice-class expedition cruise vessel RCGS RESOLUTE and started to take water. Ready to support anytime, the RCGS RESOLUTE remained for over one hour in vicinity of the scene and reached out to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Curaçao. This is an international body which oversees any maritime emergencies. All attempts to contact those on board the navy ship have been left unanswered. Only after receiving the order to resume passage full ahead by the MRCC and that further assistance is not required, the RCGS RESOLUTE, currently safely moored in the

port of Willemstad, continued sailing towards her destination at Curaçao. A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident will now be carried out.” The RCGS Resolute is Flagged in Portugal, and the Portuguese Government is currently in a diplomatic spat with Venezuela, which centered around president Maduros claim that Juan Guaido, who many see as the legitimate president of Venezuela, imported explosives via TAP – the Portuguese national airline. Portugal also recognizes Juan Guaido as the legitimate leader of the country. Ref: https://blog.halifaxshippingnews.ca/2020/03/update-on-rcgs-resolute-it-has-now-sunk-a-naval- vessel.html

01 April, 2020: FLORIDA DOCKING PLAN IN THE WORKS FOR ILL-FATED CRUISE SHIPS MIAMI -- Passengers from an ill-fated South American cruise are eager to disembark once they reach Florida, but Gov. Ron DeSantis said the state's health care resources are already stretched too thin to take on the ships' coronavirus caseload. The U.S. Coast Guard said Tuesday that the decision would be punted to if authorities can't agree. With the Zaandam and Rotterdam ships set to arrive later this week and at least two people on board needing emergency attention, a "unified command" of state, local and federal officials will be asked to approve a detailed docking plan requiring the cruise line, Holland America, to handle all medical issues without impacting South Florida's already-stressed hospitals. "There are no great choices left. These are all tough outcomes," Coast Guard Captain Jo-Ann Burdian told Broward County commissioners at an emergency meeting Tuesday. 01 April, 2020: RON DESANTIS SAYS HE’LL ORDER A RESCUE FROM STRANDED CRUISE SHIP — BUT ONLY THE PEOPLE FROM FLORIDA On Wednesday, CNN’s Joe Lockhart reported that Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is preparing a rescue mission for people trapped aboard the MS Zandaam cruise ship off the coast of Florida. The catch? DeSantis plans to rescue only the 49 Floridians on the ship. None of the other 1,200 passengers on board — including the 250 Americans from other states and the 400 Canadians — will be rescued. The ship has been stuck in a holding pattern and heading for Fort Lauderdale, after ports in several countries rejected them amid the coronavirus pandemic, and passengers are begging Florida authorities for help. Two passengers are confirmed dead of coronavirus, nine others have tested positive, and an additional 179 have flu-like symptoms but haven’t been tested. “I don’t know if they are going to accept us, I hope they do,” said 63- year-old Ohio artist Andrea Anderson, one of those trapped. “We need to get off this ship.” On Monday, DeSantis rejected the idea of a broader rescue, telling Fox News, “We cannot afford to have people who are not even Floridians dumped into South Florida using up those valuable resources.” Read more….

01 April, 2020: CORAL PRINCESS CRUISE SHIP HEADS TO FLORIDA WITH SICK PASSENGERS, AS ZAANDAM AWAITS ITS FATE WITH THE SAME PORT A Princess Cruises ship heading to Port Everglades — where authorities are already scrambling to figure out what to do with the Zaandam, a ship carrying passengers sick from coronavirus — has ordered its guests to stay in their rooms after some reported flu-like symptoms. The Coral Princess, with 1,024 guests on board and an unknown number of crew, is expected to arrive at the Fort Lauderdale-area port in Florida on Saturday. Its approach and recent report of ill passengers adds another layer of complexity to a crisis that has commanded the attention of county officials, federal agencies, the Florida governor and President Trump. Broward County commissioners spent much of Tuesday discussing plans for Holland America Line's Zaandam, where four people have died, nearly 200 reported flu-like symptoms and two are reportedly in serious need of medical evacuation. Nine people have tested positive for covid-19, including two who died, according to an executive with parent company Carnival Corp., which also owns Princess Cruises. Zaandam and a sister ship, Rotterdam — which took on some of the first ship's passengers after the illness started spreading — are awaiting permission to dock at the port. They are expected Wednesday night or Thursday if they get permission, the port said. For weeks, passengers on the Coral Princess have been frustrated but relatively comfortable, even as the rest of the world largely went into lockdown and port after port closed to the ship. With no reports of the novel coronavirus on board, guests were free to mingle, dine and take part in activities: line dancing, shows, tai chi, according to a passenger. Some gathered to applaud health-care workers back home, even as they tried frantically to figure out how they would get there. Early Tuesday, that all changed when the ship's captain announced everyone would be required to stay in their staterooms. According to an update from Princess Cruises, which has dealt with the largest cruise coronavirus outbreaks of the pandemic, the medical center had reported "a higher-than-normal number of people presenting influenza-like symptoms." The operator said "many" of those tested positive for influenza, but did not provide numbers for how many were sick or how many had the flu. "Given the concern surrounding covid-19 (coronavirus), and out of an abundance of caution, guests have been asked to self-isolate in their staterooms and all meals will now be delivered by room service," the company said. "Crew will remain in their staterooms when not working." Coral Princess left March 5 from Santiago, Chile, on a South American voyage. Global cruise lines suspended operations and started working to bring ships back to ports on March 13. On March 19, all passengers were expecting to leave the ship when it was docked in Buenos Aires. But according to updates from the cruise line, only some were allowed to leave, including those with passports from Argentina and some who had confirmed flights leaving that day. The ship left late March 19 after a presidential decree that would have forced it to stay in port "for an indeterminate number of days" without letting anyone off. Efforts to disembark passengers in the following days in Uruguay and Brazil were unsuccessful, and Princess said the ship would go directly to Fort Lauderdale. For passengers, the new restrictions were a blow that added to the uncertainty that has persisted for much of the trip. "The mood is more resigned than anything as nothing we can do," passenger Gill

Morgan, 66, said in an email. "Disappointed as we were nearly there." Morgan, who works part-time for the National Health Service in Britain, said she has no idea what awaits. "First issue will be whether FL will accept us and we don't know when we will hear," she said. Source: Washington Post.com

01 April, 2020: DESPITE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAKS, CRUISE SHIP BOOKINGS ARE UP FOR 2021 For much of February and March, cruise ships floated through headlines as clusters of Covid-19 infections broke out onboard. First it was the Diamond Princess, held off the coast of Japan for nearly a month as the virus spread among its passengers and crew. Another ship, the , later accumulated infections off the coast of California. And in an ongoing saga, the Carnival-owned Holland America ship Zaandam is currently en route to Fort Lauderdale, Florida with 200 sick and four dead passengers. In each case, hundreds of people and a highly communicable virus have been trapped on board with one another for extended periods of time. In spite of these incidents, investment analysts at UBS say their conversations with large US cruise lines show people are still feeling dreamy about sea-bound escapes. “Booking volume in the last 30 days for 2021 is actually up 9% versus the same time last year,” UBS equity analysts wrote in a March 31 report on cruise lines. “That includes people applying their future cruise credits from sailings that were cancelled this year, but still shows a surprising resilience in desire to book a cruise.” Major cruise lines have temporarily halted setting sail as a response to the virus. In cases of canceled cruises, lines are giving passengers the option to have travel credits valued greater than their original purchases (some at 120%) or full refunds. It’s unclear how much of the reported 9% increase in booking volume is comprised of people rebooking canceled trips. Still, cruises to Asia and Alaska are up more than usual. Tours through the Caribbean are performing well, too. The only bookings that are underperforming are ones to the Mediterranean Sea, the analysts wrote. 01 April, 2020: ZAANDAM AND ROTTERDAM AWAIT PERMISSION FROM LOCAL SOUTH FLORIDA AUTHORITIES FOR HUMANITARIAN DISEMBARKATION OF GUESTS Holland America Line is awaiting confirmation to disembark guests from Zaandam and Rotterdam in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. We remain fully engaged with the Broward Unified Command and other governmental and embassy authorities to resolve this humanitarian situation and get the nearly 1,200 well guests home immediately who are fit for travel per guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Both ships are scheduled to arrive at the boundary of U.S. waters by early tomorrow morning and will remain outside U.S. waters while awaiting clearance to enter. Guests fit for travel per the CDC would transfer straight from the ship to flights for onward travel home, the majority on charter flights. Out of an abundance of caution, these guests will be transported in coaches that will be sanitized, with limited person-to-person contact and while wearing masks. These provisions well exceed what the CDC have advised is necessary for their travel. Guests have not left the ship since March 14 and have self-isolated in their staterooms since March 22. The approximately 45 guests who still have mild illness and are unfit to travel at this time will continue to isolate on board until recovered. Disembarkation would be at a later date to be determined and only after they have recovered and are in alignment with CDC guidelines for being fit to travel. For the estimated less than ten people who need immediate critical care shoreside, we have secured approval from a local health system partner that they

will accept them for treatment. This small number is the only group that will require any support from medical resources in Broward County and is necessary to prevent further harm to their health. 01 April, 2020: COAST GUARD WARNS MEDICAL EVACUATIONS MAY BE DENIED The United States Coast Guard has warned cruise operators that medical evacuations are placing stress on local medical resources and may no longer be possible in Florida, according to a recent bulletin. The Coast Guard also said vessels should consider keeping persons aboard and treating them there instead. The Coast Guard went on to say that foreign-flagged vessels, and those registered in the Bahamas, should seek flag state support. "Medical facilities in the Port of Miami, for example, are no longer accepting MEDEVAC patients due to limited hospital capacity and it is expected that neighboring counties will follow suit," the Coast Guard said. 01 April, 2020: CARNIVAL STILL HAS 6,000 PASSENGERS ON SHIPS AT SEA Cruise operator Carnival said it still has 6,000 passengers on its ships at sea amid the widening coronavirus pandemic and that they may not be able to disembark until the end of April. Carnival, the world's largest cruise operator, also said some crew members aren't able to return to their homes and will be housed and fed on the ships. The company disclosed the number of at-sea passengers in a regulatory filing tied to a stock offering. Cruise line bookings have plunged during the virus outbreak and crushed industry players' financial results. Carnival shares are down 76% this year. 01 April, 2020: CORONAVIRUS: BRITON DIES ON CRUISE SHIP AS NO 10 ADMITS IT CAN’T HELP EVERY STRANDED TRAVELER A Briton is among four people to have died on a coronavirus-stricken cruise ship stranded off the US coast. Two of the four people who died on the Zaandam, moored off the coast of Florida, had been diagnosed with Covid-19. Nine others have also tested positive for the virus, and 189 have reported flu-like symptoms. The Zaandam, carrying more than 200 Britons, is seeking to dock in Florida after being turned away from numerous ports. Ron DeSantis, Florida’s governor, said that the state’s resources were too overstretched to deal with the cases on the ship. “Just to drop people off at the place where we’re having the highest number of cases right not just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense,” he said. 01 April, 2020: 10 CRUISE SHIPS THAT ARE STILL AT SEA AS THE CORONAVIRUS SHUTS DOWN THE CRUISE INDUSTRY The novel coronavirus has put much of the cruise industry on hold after many cruise lines have announced they will cancel cruises until May at the earliest. But some ships will remain at sea in the coming days and weeks as they finish their itineraries. Many of those ships have avoided the coronavirus outbreaks experienced by the Diamond Princess, Grand Princess, and , though at least one, Holland America Line's MS Zaandam, has seen dozens of passengers get sick. A representative for the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), a trade association for the cruise industry, said 3.6% of the 277 ships operated by its member cruise lines had not yet completed their itineraries, as of Monday. Nine of the 10 ships on this list are owned by CLIA-member cruise lines (the Columbus is the sole exception), but the CLIA representative did not specify if there were any ships not mentioned in this story that are still at sea. These 10 cruise ships are still at sea as the industry deals with the fallout from the coronavirus.

01 April, 2020: COAST GUARD: CRUISE SHIPS MUST STAY AT SEA WITH SICK ONBOARD FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The U.S. Coast Guard has directed all cruise ships to prepare to treat any sick passengers and crew on board while being sequestered “indefinitely" offshore during the coronavirus pandemic. The new rules require daily updates on each ship's coronavirus caseload for vessels in U.S. waters, and come with a stiff warning: Any foreign-flagged vessels “that loiter beyond U.S. territorial seas" should try first to medically evacuate the very sick to those countries instead. Many of South Florida's cruise ships are registered in the Bahamas, where hospital capacity is limited and people are still recovering from last year's Hurricane Dorian. The rules, which apply to any vessel carrying more than 50 people, were issued in a March 29 safety bulletin signed by Coast Guard Rear Admiral E.C. Jones, whose district includes Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Puerto Rico. The U.S. Coast Guard is telling foreign-flagged cruise ships to be prepared to care for people with COVID- 19 for an "indefinite period of time" at sea or to seek help from countries other than the U.S., citing a health care system that is being overwhelmed. The instructions are in a new safety bulletin that took effect this week along the southern Atlantic coast, including Florida – which is reporting more than 6,700 coronavirus cases, as of Tuesday evening. If a cruise ship must send someone ashore for medical care, its owner will be responsible for essentially every step of the trip, from arranging an evacuation to hiring a private ambulance and ensuring the person has a spot in a hospital. But the Coast Guard bulletin, signed by Rear Adm. E.C. Jones of the 7th District based in Miami, also says it could be difficult to find any facility in South Florida that can take new COVID-19 patients. "Medical facilities in the Port of Miami, for example, are no longer accepting MEDEVAC patients due to limited hospital capacity and it is expected that neighboring counties will follow suit," wrote Jones, whose Coast Guard district includes Florida, Puerto Rico, Georgia and South Carolina. The new medical requirements apply to any vessel carrying more than 50 people. It also singles out cruise ships that are registered in the Bahamas – referring to many of the ships owned by large cruise lines such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian. Foreign-flagged ships are the norm in the cruise industry. By registering ships in the Bahamas, Panama and other countries, cruise companies can avoid U.S. taxes as well as employment and environmental laws. But now, the Coast Guard is telling those companies that their ships should seek medical care in the countries where they are registered, rather than rely on the U.S. "Foreign flagged vessels that loiter beyond U.S. territorial seas, particularly those registered to The Bahamas, that require a MEDEVAC to a shoreside facility should seek flag state support prior to seeking support from the limited facilities in the U.S.," Jones wrote. The cruise ship industry is currently under a 30-day suspension of all trips from the U.S. that took effect on March 14. But dozens of ships remain at sea. The Coast Guard memo was first reported by the Miami Herald, which gives this accounting of the current situation off the Florida shore: "Seventeen ships are lined up at Port Miami and Port Everglades, with more than a dozen others hovering miles offshore. Most have only crew aboard, but several still carrying passengers are steaming toward South Florida ports. In SEC filings Tuesday, Carnival said it has more than 6,000 passengers still at sea. lines on March 13." News of the Coast Guard bulletin emerged as a Carnival-owned Holland America seeks a port for the Zaandam, a cruise ship on which four people have died and nearly 200 people were sickened by suspected COVID-19. The company wants the ship to dock in Fort Lauderdale; several countries have denied permission for the ship to dock and disembark passengers. 01 April, 2020: UPDATE ON RCGS RESOLUTE – IT HAS NOW SUNK A NAVAL VESSEL. The Resolute had been heading north with no destination or ETA. RCGS Resolute arrived off the north coast of Trinidad late on March 25th and stopped overnight. On the morning of the 26th she rendezvoused with the tanker Kerkyra, out of Port of Spain, Trinidad, and presumably refueled. the ship then continued sailing when the ship suddenly began reporting that it was not under command on March 29 about 60 nautical miles off the north coast of Venezuela. the ship drifting at one knot less than 20 nautical miles off the uninhabited island of La Tortuga at 13:00 ET.

01 April, 2020: TRUMP PLANS TO INTERVENE ON ALLOWING HOLLAND AMERICA CRUISE SHIPS TO DOCK IN FLORIDA President Donald Trump said Tuesday he is going to speak with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis about whether to allow two Holland America cruise ships, one with four dead and 200 passengers and crew having had flu-like symptoms, to dock. While never explicitly saying what he plans to tell DeSantis, who has raised concerns about allowing the ships into port, Trump said, "I am going to do what is right, not only for us but for humanity." Holland America's MS Zaandam and MS Rotterdam cruise ships – one with ill people on board – have crossed the Panama Canal and are headed to Florida. But whether the coronavirus-infected ship and its sister vessel will be able to dock has been in question. Holland America transferred healthy passengers to the Rotterdam, which met the Zaandam with additional supplies, staff and test kits last week. The two ships have remained together for the rest of the journey. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said that passengers on Zaandam and Rotterdam cannot be ‘dumped’ in the state. 01 April, 2020: HOT LAY UP TO COST MILLIONS PER MONTH PER CRUISE SHIP Cruise operators are quickly entering hot lay up scenarios with their cruise ships, meaning a mostly full set of crew and a ship that could return to service almost immediately. A once unforeseen scenario is now reality and Carnival Corporation, in a recent SEC filing, has detailed the costs associated with a hot lay up - referred to as a warm lay up in Carnival's filing - at $2 to $3 million per month per vessel. Carnival said the cost per prolonged ship lay-up is appropriately $1 million per month, which it said it anticipates doing for the majority of its fleet. A prolonged lay-up will generally see reduced crewing and limited technical operations, also meaning the ship could take weeks to be ready to return to service. 01 April, 2020: PASSENGERS ON HOLLAND AMERICA'S 2 STRANDED CRUISE SHIPS, THE ZAANDAM AND ROTTERDAM, MAY BE STUCK AT SEA INDEFINITELY AS FLORIDA OFFICIALS FRET OVER LETTING THEM DOCK The US Coast Guard will not yet permit the MS Zaandam, a Holland America cruise with at least two confirmed cases of COVID-19 onboard, and the MS Rotterdam, the ship sent to rescue its healthy passengers, to enter US waters. - Florida officials remain concerned that allowing Zaandam and Rotterdam passengers to disembark in Fort Lauderdale seaport Port Everglades could worsen the spread of coronavirus in the area. - Coast Guard Sector Miami Commander Captain Jo-Ann Burdian said at a March 31 Broward County Commission that Holland America's parent company Carnival Corp. must first submit a complete report regarding the medical situation on each ship. - Four passengers have died on the Zaandam after an outbreak of respiratory illness sickened at least 189 people.

- Carnival Chief Maritime Officer William Burke told county officials that it was fair to assume at this point that the disease was COVID-19. He said only 14 people are currently experiencing influenza-like symptoms, however.

The fate of both the MS Zaandam and the MS Rotterdam — and their combined pool of 2,500 passengers and crew members — remains uncertain, as officials in southern Florida weigh the risks of disembarking potentially sick passengers in a region already rife with coronavirus. In a March 31 Broward County Commission meeting, US Coast Guard Sector Miami Commander Captain Jo-Ann Burdian said that the Zaandam and the Rotterdam would not be permitted to enter US waters until Holland America's parent company Carnival Corp. submitted a complete plan regarding the medical situation on each ship. "In the opinion of the seventh Coast Guard district, the conditions onboard present especially hazardous conditions," she said. The Coast Guard has been working with the Broward County Sheriff's Office, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Florida Department of Health, US Customs and Border Patrol, port pilots, and other officials, in an interagency task force formed to deal with the crisis at Port Everglades. It will be left to that task force to approve any course of action regarding the stranded Holland America vessels, as well as other cruises stuck without a port of call. The plight of the Zaandam and the Rotterdam reflect the unprecedented blow that the coronavirus pandemic has had on the cruise industry. The Zaandam's cruise was scheduled to last 14 days, embarking from Buenos Aires on March 7. The cruise line shared the news in the form of a letter to each crew member. “Because you were a crew member on the same voyage and subsequent voyages, it is possible that you [were] exposed to someone who was sick with COVID-19,” the cruise line said in the letter, which was provided to the Miami Herald by a crew member. 01 April, 2020: THE CORONAVIRUS MAY SINK THE CRUISE-SHIP BUSINESS The industry has few friends and its main customers, the elderly, may shun it for good. When the Zaandam, a cruise ship operated by Holland America Line, left Buenos Aires on March 7th, its passengers were promised 31 nights of “elegant and comfortable” luxury. They are now approaching Florida, and their holiday has been anything but elegant, comfortable or luxurious. More than 1,000 people have been confined to their cabins since March 22nd. As of March 30th, at least 193 had fallen ill with flu-like symptoms, several have tested positive for covid-19 and four have died. Fearing contagion, the ports of call have kept her out; and so the Zaandam has been stuck at sea. Even its final destination, Fort Lauderdale, may not accept the ship. “We do not want to see people dumped in southern Florida,” Ron DeSantis, Florida’s governor, fumed on Fox News on March 30th.
