We also had a silent auction during the Induction Banquet. In the Fall Semester we held a social gathering at a restaurant and they gave us 15% of the proceeds for anyone who p Initiations Total 1 Initiations Description Each year our chapter holds an initiation banquet at the end of the school year, during the spring quarter. The banquet is open to all students , new and current members, their family members and friends, alumni as well as Ohio University Faculty. This year, the Alpha Chapter inducted 14 new members at the Annual Induction Banquet which was March 15th, 2013 in the Baker Center at Ohio University. We also awarded 6 awards: Outstanding First Year Master s Student, Outstanding Master s Student, Outstanding Doctoral Student, Outstanding Service to the Chapter, Outstanding Research Award, and Outstanding Practitioner. We had an auction to cover our chapter dues and featured items such as a gym pass, purses and shoes, candles, signed books, home dicor, DJ package, and handmade jewelry. Dr. Michael Brubaker, CSI Secretary was the guest speaker. Workshop Total 6 Workshop Activities Clinical or school issues,Professional development and leadership Workshop Description The Alpha Chapter held Pizza and Proposals several times this year. This is our program focused on increasing scholarship. Members get together to learn about ways in which to become involved in current research, learn how to present at professional couns Newsletters Total 2 Newsletters Description The Alpha chapter newsletter was distributed each semester. A committee has been created to assist with development of the newsletter. Newsletters include a faculty spotlight, community involvement, recognitions, and well as highlights on inspiring places Counselor Community 4 Engagement (CCE) Total CCE Activities Advocacy / volunteering,Run/walk-a-thons,Community awareness,Community collaborations,Professional development CCE Description Our chapter participates in the NAMI Walk and The Gathering Place "Walk the Walk", an event promoting Mental Health Awareness. We participate in Walk for the Homeless, a donation is made and members are encouraged to learn more about homelessness in Athens County Ohio. We also participated in the MS Walk, which was a new experience for us this year. The incoming president has Multiple Sclerosis and has been teaching students about MS and so she formed a team and members of the Alpha Chapter walked in the MS Walk held this month in Athens, Ohio. Our largest event that our chapter holds is the Sue Apple Memorial Run. This event raises money for a scholarship for one counselor education student while honoring Sue and all she did for the community especially in advocating for Mental Health Awareness. The Sue Apple Run will be held next month. Business Meetings Total 8 Business Meetings Business meetings were held approximately eight times throughout Description the year in both Fall and Spring semesters, with members of the Executive Board and/or the President and Chapter Faculty Advisor. This served as a time to gather ideas and check in on progre Membership Meetings Total 0 Membership Meetings This year our chapter has had monthly or bi-weekly meetings Description Membership meetings are scheduled bi-weekly throughout the year in both Fall and Spring semesters. They were located in 104 and 214A McCracken Hall on Tuesdays from 3-4pm. We had a Brennen s Lunch on October 23. This was an event where all students, CSI members [current and alumni] and faculty met at a local restaurant to socialize and get to kno Professional Advocacy 3 Total Professional Advocacy Activities Professional Advocacy On Tuesday, November 13, 2012 the Social Justice Committee of Description Chi Sigma Iota held its first social justice event in recognition of Veteran's Day. The committee set up a table in the lobby of McCracken Hall and invited passing faculty and students to stop by the table to become familiar with Ron Zaleski and his mission to get the world's attention. With Mr. Zaleski powerful quote "18 Vets A Day commit suicide", the committee encouraged awareness of veteran suicide due to depression, PTSD and other mental health illnesses. Participants were encouraged to wear yellow ribbons to honor veterans and to bring awarenss to their heightened risk for suicide. The social justice committee took "A Stand for Veterans on a Barefoot Crusade" by photographing the feet of students in the college of education in colorful socks and sending the picture of the socks with a letter to our state representative. We also attended the Leadership and Advocacy Workshop held at Youngstown State where we also presented a poster on this issue. Another initiative taken by our chapter was Pay It Forward Month where each day we would try to do a random ask of kindness in honor of the Sandy Hook Victims and then post the pictures. Other Activities We had the Peer Mentoring Program throughout the year where first year Master s and Doctoral students are mentored by second year Master s and Doctoral students. The students are matched on area of research interest or area of study [clinical mental health, rehabilitation, or school].This year we continued to seek recognition for the various events, newsletters, and activities that our chapter does. We applied for Outstanding Chapter, Newsletter and Program from CSI International, however we did not win those awards. The Alpha Chapter was a finalist (from 350 student organizations) and won the Ohio University Edwin L. Kennedy Organization Award for Outstanding Community Service. Alpha Chapter President Laura Pressley was a finalist and won the Ohio University Outstanding Doctoral Student Leader Award. Both awards were given at the 30th Annual Leadership Gala which was held at Baker Center. Greatest Accomplishments Growth of members Area Greatest Accomplishments Our greatest accomplishment this year has been supporting Total members who wanted to implement ideas they have for improving our chapter. Our incoming president, Jessica Henry, worked on the Social Justice Committee and implemented new ideas such as the MS Walk, the Pay it Forward Month, and th Veteran Suicide Sock Day. We are excited to see the ideas and initiatives of the Alpha Chapter of CSI continue to grow and develop. Another initiative includes nominating faculty and students in our program for national awards. Members of CSI, along with our CFA, have written many letters of support and prepared several nomination packets that have resulted in five national awards from various counseling organizations. Most recently the Alpha Chapter won the Ohio University Edwin L. Kennedy Organization Award for Outstanding Community Service and Chapter President Laura Pressley won the Ohio University Outstanding Doctoral Student Leader Award. We are excited to highlight the accomplishments of our students and faculty in a manner that brings national recognition. We send meeting minutes and agendas to all members as well as to faculty so they can be involved with our events and meetings. We also sent the newsletter to counselor educators, and feature a counselor educator in the newsletter. Counselor Education faculty were invited to participate in all chapter events. Our CFA reports on chapter activities at faculty meetings.Counselor Educators at OU have consistently participated in the Annual Induction Banquet, and we sent invitations to all counselor educators to invite them to the Banquet March 15th, 2013. The Alpha chapter also asked the Counselor Education faculty about statewide and national professional development activities and sent along all information received on the alpha chapter listserv for all members. We also has two counselor educators to speak on the Supervisee Workshop Panel.
