Damiana/Turnera Introduction: Damiana is an excellent strengthening remedy for the nervous system. It has an ancient reputation as an aphrodisiac. Whilst this may or may not be true, it has a definite tonic action on the central nervous and the hormonal system. As a useful anti-depressant, Damiana is considered to be a specific in cases of anxiety and depression where there is a sexual factor. It may be used to strengthen the male sexual system. Scientific name: Turnera diffusa Var. aphrodisiaca Synonyms:Turnera aphrodisiaca; Turnera microphylla. Sources: The main source of Damiana is vegetable source. It is a shrub native to southern Texas in the United States, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean. It belongs to the family Passifloraceae (Turneraceae). Damiana contains damianin; tetraphyllin B; gonzalitosin I; arbutin; tricosan-2-one; acacetin; p-cymene; β-sitosterol; 1,8-cineole; apigenin; α-pinene; β-carotene; β-pinene; tannins; thymol; and hexacosanol. In total, 22 flavonoids, maltol glucoside, phenolics, seven cyanogenic glycosides, monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, triterpenoids, the polyterpene ficaprenol-11, fatty acids, and caffeine have been found in the genus Turnera. Damiana's anxiolytic properties might be due to apigenin. Viable plant and seed material sold as T. diffusa from both private and commercial sources largely turns out to be misidentified Turnera ulmifolia (a.k.a. "False Damiana"), a closely related species. This widespread issue has been noted by the scientific community, and has created much confusion among both amateur and professional horticulturists alike. While T. ulmifolia is similar in appearance, its chemical constituents and ethnobotanical uses are distinctly different. -

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT San Juan Watershed, Monterrey, Mexico—Adapting to extreme hydro-meteorological events Photo: © Juan Ángel Sánchez de Llanos The challenge NorthMONCL AmericOVa A Monterrey, Mexico, one of Latin America’s industrial capitals with a population of over 4 million, is an important economic center for residents and Mexico alike. Unfortunately, the city is positioned in an area that is naturally prone to intense hydro-meteorological events (floods and droughts). Because most (approximately 60 percent) of Monterrey’s drinking water supply comes from upstream areas that have been degraded on a recurring basis from land-use change and phenomena such as forest fires and invasive species, Monterrey is one of the top 25 Latin American cities for water risk. Climate events can be devastating. In 2010, Hurricane Alex cost the state of Nuevo León US$1.35 billion. Poor land management cannot be solely blamed for these losses, but it plays a role. Deforestation and erosion in the San Juan watershed, alongside rampant Rio Pesquería Rio San Juan and poorly planned expansion of urban areas, can reduce infiltration in recharge zones that, in turn, exacerbates runoff and can MONTERREY contribute to flooding. Future flood events are projected to intensify in the watershed, potentially exceeding the retention capacity of Rio Santa Catarina the existing dam that protects the city from high flows. SALTILLO Rio Ramos The year following Hurricane Alex, Monterrey was hit again, this time by a severe drought. The effects of the drought were made worse by the weakened storage and regulation capacity of upstream areas. The scarcity of water ultimately damaged over 50,000 hectares of crops and killed more than 10,000 livestock. -

Abstract Infection with Helicobacter pyloriis the most common cause of stomach and duodenal ulcers. About more than 80 % of people are infected with H. pylori in developing countries. H. pylori uses urease enzyme product “ammonia” in order to neutralize and protect itself from the stomach acidic condition and urease enzyme activity has been shown to be essential to the colonization of H. pylori. Inhibitory activity of 20 traditional medicinal plants were examined and evaluated against Jack bean urease activity by Berthelot reaction to obtains natural sources of urease inhibitors. Each herb was extracted using 80% aqueous methanol, then tested its IC50 value was determined. Eight of the whole 20 studied plants crude extracts were found the most effective with IC50 values of less than 100 µg/mL including Laurus nobilis, Zingiber officinale, Nigella sativa, Angelica archangelica, Acorus calamus, Allium sativum,Curcuma longa, and Citrus aurantium extracts, from which most potent urease inhibitory was observed for Zingiber officinale, Laurus nobilis, and Nigella sativa with IC50 values of 48.54, 48.69 and 59.10 µg/mL, respectively. -

J. Agric. Sci., 26 (1), 232–237 The medicinal herbs as natural products can be use like not expensive additives in artificial diets for aquatic animals which are safe for fish and the environment. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the Angelica archangelica L. extract on the growth performance, meat quality and biochemical blood parameters (glucose, urea, creatinine, total protein, albumin, ASAT, ALAT, ALP, Ca, P, Mg, triglycerides, cholesterol) of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Thirty specimens from the rainbow trout with anaverage weight of 42.55±7.48 g (control, C) and 42.51±6.02 g (experimental, Ang.a.) in good health condition were placed in each tank and cultivated for 60 days. A control group (no added) and an experimental (with added 433 mg.kg-1 of angelica extract) option, each with a two repetition, were set in a recirculating system in the Aquaculture Base of the Faculty of Agriculture at the Trakia University. -

WWF Mexico and the Alliance for Climate Action in Mexico Urge the National Government for Higher Ambition and Action to Address the Climate Crisis
December 21, 2020 WWF Mexico and the Alliance for Climate Action in Mexico urge the national government for higher ambition and action to address the climate crisis. Five years after the Paris Agreement, Mexico's commitments are insufficient On December 12 2015, 195 nations signed the Paris Agreement, a historic agreement to tackle climate change while respecting human rights. As part of this agreement, the signatory countries presented their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to stabilize greenhouse gas emissions and limit average global temperature rise to well below 2° degrees Celsius. However, the 2015 commitments made by most countries were not enough to meet this goal. With the NDCs initially presented by the signatory countries, Mexico included, the global temperature could increase between 3 and 4° C by the year 2100. According to the scientific community, this will have catastrophic consequences. On the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement celebrated this year, countries were required to review their commitments under the principle of progression, which seeks increased target ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In recent days, the government of Mexico released its revised NDC but, unfortunately, does not follow this principle. Mexico only endorsed the same commitments made in 2015: a 22 percent decrease in its greenhouse gas emissions and 51 percent decrease in black carbon. During the public consultation carried out by Mexico's government as part of the NDC revision process, we, members of the Alliance for Climate Action in Mexico (ACA-MX)--including civil society, academic, business and local government representatives--expressed our concerns on lack of ambition. -

However, earlier reports suggested poor seed germination in this species and therefore, domestication was not done. Present paper deals with improvement of germination potential of the species. Seeds from different natural populations were tested in polyhouse and nursery bed conditions by using different soil compositions. Pre sowing treatments of various concentrations of Potassium nitrate (KNO3), Sodium Hypochlorite (NaHClO3) and Thiourea (CH4N2S) were also used to enhance the germination. Germination potential differed significantly in the laboratory, as well as in the polyhouse conditions of the seeds from different -1 populations. Among the pre sowing treatments, KNO3 150 mM and Thiourea 200 µL L , germination was improved significantly. Furthermore, mean germination time was reduced under laboratory conditions as well as inside polyhouse condition. Pretreatments of the seeds by these chemicals also improved germination in polyhouse condition. The results of these treatments inside polyhouse and laboratory are presented here and possible reasons for enhancement in germination discussed. [Journal of American Science 2009;5(5):59-70].
