Though she had rejected Marmaduke's proffered love, his tone, so suddenly altered, his abrupt, broken words and confusion, his farewell, so soon succeeding his passionate declaration, could not fail to wound that pride of woman which never sleeps till modesty is gone. But this made the least cause of the profound humiliation which bowed down her spirit. The meaning taunt conveyed in the rhyme of the tymbesteres pierced her to the quick; the calm, indifferent smile of the stranger, as he regarded her, the beauty of the dame he attended, woke mingled and contrary feelings, but those of jealousy were perhaps the keenest: and in the midst of all she started to ask herself if indeed she had suffered her vain thoughts to dwell too tenderly upon one from whom the vast inequalities of human life must divide her evermore. 264 book reviews Julian Strube Vril: Eine okkulte Urkraft in Theosophie und esoterischen Neonazismus, München: Wilhelm Fink 2013. 222 pp. isbn: 978-3-7705-5515-4. Until quite recently “Nazi occultism” has mainly been a topic confined to spec- tacular crypto-or pseudo-history and popular fiction, while serious scholarly research has been, to say the least, scarce. Almost 30 years after Goodrick- Clarke’s seminal The Occult Roots of Nazism it seems that academia is slowly beginning to acknowledge this as a field worthy of exploration. This is not because of its historical qualities—as the concept per se is highly question- able—but with regard to the substantial impact it has had on post-war popular culture and right-wing political movements, thereby also on collective memo- ries of the Nazi era. In fact, many—if not most—popular narratives of “Nazi occultism” are founded on dubious revisionist concepts of history, not only by falsifying and/or distorting well-documented historical facts. Although not revisionist in the sense of Holocaust deniers, several of them are certainly triv- ializing the Nazi crimes and racist ideology in an ethically highly questionable way by “explaining” this as basically being the evil deeds of black magicians. Consequently, the victims are reduced to commodities, mere objects used in human sacrifice, thus once again dehumanized and bereft of their dignity. The lack of serious scholarly attention has certainly contributed to the success of this Nazi exploitation genre, as one of its main arguments is precisely that academia is neglecting the occult aspects of Nazi Germany. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT This thesis is an evaluation of the plays of Bulwer-Lytton. The Introduction provides a general background of drama in the early nineteenth century and a brief estimate of Bulwer’s dramatic career. It also attempts to place Bulwer’s plays in the context of his time. Chapter one examines the nature of Bulwer’s first play, The Duchess de la Valliere. Chapter two evaluates the dramatic qualities of his second play, The Lady of Lyons; or, Love and pride. Chapter three assesses the merits of the third play, Richelieu; or. The Conspiracy, and provides a general discussion of Bulwer’s political ideas. It also establishes the connection between Bulwer’s first three plays depicting three periods in French history, and draws our attention to the author’s approach to history, Chapter four discusses the fourth play. -

This article was published by the Journal of Quantitative Linguistics, volume 20, issue 1, pp 68-73, 2013 http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09296174.2012.754602 Scientific evaluation of Charles Dickens Mikhail Simkin Abstract: I report the results of the test, where the takers had to tell the prose of Charles Dickens from that of Edward Bulwer-Lytton, who is considered by many to be the worst writer in history of letters. The average score is about 50%, which is on the level of random guessing. This suggests that the quality of Dickens' prose is the same as of that of Bulwer-Lytton. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, “Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me.” On this Ernest Hemingway commented, “Yes, they have more money.” Are the very famous writers different from the obscure ones? The question may seem shocking to some people, but recent scientific research makes it quite reasonable. The study of misprints in scientific citations had lead to the conclusion that about 80% of citations are copied from the lists of references used in other papers [1]. Thus, in a majority of cases, a citation is not a result of an independent evaluation of the qualities of the cited paper but merely an imitation of another citer’s behavior. This way a paper that already was cited is likely to be cited again, and after it is cited again it is even more likely to be cited in the future. Thus some papers can become much more cited than others even when identical in merit. -

INDEX EDWARD BULWER-LYTTON EDWARD BULWER-LYTTON 1803 May 25, Wednesday: Edward George Earle Bulwer-Lytton, 1st baron Lytton was born in London to General William Earle Bulwer of Heydon Hall and Wood Dalling, Norfolk and Elizabeth Barbara Lytton, daughter of Richard Warburton Lytton of Knebworth, Hertfordshire. (His name as assigned at birth was Edward George Earle Bulwer.) The Reverend William Emerson, pastor of the 1st Church of Boston, attended the Election Day sermon of another reverend and then dined with the governor of Massachusetts. When he returned to his parsonage he was informed of the women’s business of that day: his wife Ruth Haskins Emerson had been giving birth in Boston and the apparently healthy infant had been a manchild. The baby would be christened Ralph, after a remote uncle, and Waldo, after a family into which the Emerson family had married in the 17th century.1 (That family had been so named because it had originated with some Waldensians who had become London merchants — but in the current religious preoccupations of the Emerson family there was no trace remaining of the tradition of that Waldensianism.) Marcos lands in New York only to find out his layover flight to San Francisco has been canceled. Having nowhere to go, he ends up in his friend's apartment with a complete stranger: Alan. No there is no sex in the film, and it is in black and Stormy Night and it is more or less confined to various rooms. A Spaniard has to stay over because of a storm in a stranger's house and spends the night there with one of the two Stormy Night who live in it. They talk a lot and sometimes the camera moves and Stormy Night there is just stillness of camera movement. It is not as good for me as the Rohmer but it is an ambitious film. It questions monogamy, and the two characters resist their attraction Stormy Night each other. I know for a lot of homosexuals the lack of sex is frustrating, the black and white pointless but there is such a thing Stormy Night austerity in film. Dreyer, Bresson, Ozu and to a lesser extent Bergman showed that it works and holds an audience and this film clearly wanted to hold an audience's attention. I think it could have Stormy Night better with actors who were clearer in their speech.
