20 singers from 15 countries announced for BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2019 15-22 June 2019 • 20 of the world’s best young singers to compete in the 36th year of the BBC's premier voice competition • Competitors come from 15 countries, including three from Russia, two each from South Korea, Ukraine and USA, and one each from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, England, Guatemala (for the first time), Mexico, Mongolia, Portugal, South Africa and Wales • Extensive broadcast coverage across BBC platforms includes more LIVE TV coverage than ever before • High-level jury includes performers José Cura, Robert Holl, Dame Felicity Lott, Malcolm Martineau, Frederica von Stade alongside leading professionals David Pountney, John Gilhooly and Wasfi Kani • Value of cash prizes increased to £20,000 for the Main Prize and £10,000 for Song Prize, thanks to support from Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation • Song Prize trophy to be renamed the Patron’s Cup in recognition of this support • Audience Prize this year to be dedicated to the memory of much-missed baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, winner of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World in 1989, who died in 2017 • New partnership with Wigmore Hall sees all Song Prize finalists offered debut concert recitals in London’s prestigious venue, while Main Prize to be awarded a Queen Elizabeth Hall recital at London’s Southbank Centre Twenty of the world’s most outstanding classical singers are today [4 March 2019] announced for BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2019. In 2014 she completed a Master’s degree in Advanced Vocal Studies with Distinction at the Wales International Academy of Voice, under the tutelage of Dennis O’Neill and Nuccia Focile. Prior to that, she gained a Bachelor of Music degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Voice Perfor- mance from the New Zealand School of Music at Victoria University. Isabella’s opera work includes the lead role of Gulnara in Verdi’s II corsaro. She has ISABELLA taken part in masterclasses with artists such as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Montserrat MOORE Caballé. Her most recent achievements include: winning the 2015 Joan Sutherland and New Zealand | 25 Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award in Sydney; second place in the 2015 Sydney Eistedd- fod McDonald’s Operatic Aria; winning the 2015 Sydney Eisteddfod Joan Sutherland Memorial Senior Vocal Scholarship; winning the 2014 New Zealand Aria Competition in Rotorua (NZ); winning the 2014 IFAC Australian Singing Competition (The ‘Mathy’) in Sydney and winning the prestigious 2014 New Zealand Lexus Song Quest Competi- tion in Auckland (NZ). Isabella was a finalist in the 2014 ROSL Music Competition in London where she received an International Competitor’s Award. -

spring 2005 news issue 13 ive years ago soprano Sally Matthews jumped straight from a Samling Masterclass into the role of Nanetta in Falstaff at the FRoyal Opera House and since then her feet have hardly touched the ground. “It was all rather immediate,” said Sally. “I went from a magical week in Masterclass to understudy the role of Nanetta. The chosen singer was ill on and off throughout rehearsals but it wasn’t until the general rehearsal, which I was actually late for, that I was told I would be singing in all the performances – it was an opportunity of a lifetime.” Now one of opera’s rising stars, she’s coming back to perform exclusively for The Samling Foundation at a fund-raising event at the Mansion House in Newcastle upon Tyne on Sunday March 6th at 7pm. Performing with the acclaimed pianist Malcolm Martineau, with whom Sally has just recorded and released a recital disc on the EMI debut series, they will be delighting audiences with an evening of opera and songs from the CD and there may also be a surprise or two on the night! 2005 already looks set to be a busy year for Sally, playing the leading role in Cavalli’s La Calisto in Munich, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte in Amsterdam and Carmina Burana with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Simon Rattle, which is being recorded by EMI. “The confidence I gained during Masterclass helped me to produce a performance of critical acclaim in my first major role, as Nanetta in Falstaff – something I’ll never forget,” said Sally. -
