St. Peter’s news – September 2018 You‟ll see somewhere later in this magazine a poster for something we are calling the „HUB‟. This is something emerging from discussions we have been having about our community – and the survey which some of you completed and returned to the village shop. We are grateful for your continuing input. One thing which people felt was needed was “more ways to get together”. This came from one of our young people. We hope to provide a safe place for all generations to be able to meet. A place to be able to offer the skills we all have, as well as to learn Devon Community Together new ones and in doing so meeting neighbours and making friends. Energy Efficiency Initiatives Passing skills on from old to young, and from young to old. Smart Meters Energy Saving Network We can offer space to bring and set out your scalextrics (or racing Devon Oil Collective Making your community energy wise cars or train sets). If you think you are good at mending stuff bring To find out more, please visit our web site: some suitable hand tools or needle and thread, and if you have www.devoncommunities.org.uk stuff that needs mending… bring it along! Tel 01392 248919 Email: [email protected] We‟ll cook a meal for all to share, contributions (of cooking skills 1 2 and of food) welcome but not required. We can provide a place 3 for talking or dancing, and a quieter place for homework or study. 4 5 We ask that primary school aged children be accompanied by an 6 7 adult who is responsible for them – this won‟t be an after-school 8 club. But you also don‟t need a child to be able to come! 9 10 11 While we are hosting this hub at St. Peter‟s, this is not „church‟. We 12 13 won‟t be preaching or praying with you… unless of course you want and choose to chat about faith. This hub is purely meant as a partnership between church and community – and a meeting 14 15 16 place for everybody. We want to use the community building that 17 18 is the church for the community. 19 20 So we‟re starting out on this adventure – not knowing quite what it will look like initially – on Thursday 20th September. COMPOSTING GROUP I have been asked by a few people to explain how the Composting Scheme was set up and how it works, so here goes.- In December 1996 the Parish Council was asked by Devon Community Composting Network (Devon County Council) – if a composting scheme could be set up in Bratton Fleming – (I was the volunteer ) To start with we had to have planning permission, insurance and an environ- mental license (which is held in my name for Bratton Fleming Parish Council) and, of course, unpaid volunteers to run it. The License required a list of all people using the site and the number of cars etc. in and out of the site. I put down the people using the site would be as per Brat- ton Fleming electoral roll (surprise, surprise they accepted it). The idea was for three 4 ft x 4 ft x 4 ft bins to be made and green waste (no kitchen waste because of rats) – put no. 1 bin as a starter. Then material to be turned over to No.2 and 3 bins. Hey Presto you have compost. The first week so much green waste came in the bins were buried under about 6 ft of green waste (no good). The next move was to use a shredder, but it would only deal with small waste. After a couple of years the District Council purchased a chipper/shredder for us to use. Things started to look up, but in June 2007 the chipper was stolen. We had to manage for a while but in November 2007 North Devon District Council purchased a new chipper/shredder (good job it was insured by them). On 28 April 2011 we appeared on Spotlight South West T.V. and on 31st May 2011 John Way filmed us for BBC main news. This bought in enquiries from all over , Scotland, Wales, and even Spain, America and Australia. Now, to get back local – How does the scheme work? People can bring green waste to site, place in the correct places – as indicated by the signs. Things that are not allowed under License are on the big sign at the entrance to the site, i.e. Roots, Stumps, Soil, Bricks, Stones, Wire, Glass etc. We have found Wellie Boots, Cast Iron Wood Burner, Glass from Greenhouse, Barbed wire, Plastics, Dart Board, Bicycle Seat, Arm Chair, and even a rubbish bin with soiled baby’s nappies in it. UNAUTHORISED TRADE GREEN WASTE IS ILLEGAL Once a week a team of volunteers (6 or 7) meet to put the green waste through the machine. This takes on average 1.5 – 2 hours depending on how much green material has been brought in to the site. Once it has been chipped/shredded and put into the heap it will turn to a mulch/compost – handy to top up your own compost bin or use as mulch around your garden.

People can collect compost from site FREE of Charge, as long as they let us know how much they have taken away, telephone numbers on sign. Bratton Fleming Community Resilience Team needs support Following on from the floods in the Somerset Levels of 2013 the Government has proposed that for communities to be better prepared to manage such events, local Resilience teams should be set up. This would also help to relieve the impact on the Emergency Services and enable them to focus on where they are most needed.

The Community Resilience Team is looking for volunteers who are willing to help in providing support for people affected within Bratton Fleming if, and when, a situation arises. If you live within the village and would like to become a member of the team, or would like further information, please contact Sue Maxfield 01598 710051.

DEVON PRO DJ AUTUMN WEATHER FOLKLORE th Hi, I'm Simon Ryder (dj name) most of you will know me as Simon Sloman! “If St Michael's (29 of September) brings many acorns, Christmas will cover the fields with snow”. Bratton Fleming Traffic Calming Action Group – an update I knew when I took on this campaign that progress might be slow and I was right! This is a brief summary of progress so far We had a well-attended meeting on 12th June. Many ideas were floated; all were in agreement that this is an issue we feel strongly about. We have 12+ volunteers who will run a Speedwatch campaign; however we are still waiting for the police to send the necessary forms to get this up and running….watch this space! I have exchanged several emails with Devon Highways regarding speed calming meas- ures. In July they carried out an electronic speed survey, the results of which have justi- fied not taking further action. I have disputed the usefulness of their results, since the electronic equipment was located at Threeways, where many drivers slow down to turn into the school road and the shop, thus not giving a representative record of the aver- age speed of traffic travelling down other parts of the main road. Separate to this survey, the local police also chose to run a speed survey near the Sports Club in June; the percentage of cars going above 30mph was over 40%. Interest- ingly they couldn’t carry out the survey in the middle of Bratton because ‘it wasn’t safe to do so’!!! According to Highways there is not enough vehicle and pedestrian traffic through Brat- ton Fleming to justify a pedestrian crossing which might provide safer crossing near the shop and school. However, as far as I know, there has been no attempt to measure the quantity of this traffic, so I’m confused as to how they can make this judgement. I will "Bratton View" continue to press for a meeting with Highways in Bratton Fleming as well as keep asking Bed & Breakfast ...with a questions and making suggestions. I plan to carry out a survey myself (and with school difference !! pupils) to determine current data of road use to present to Highways. Your support and Angela and David welcome responses will be much appreciated. you to" Bratton View" The answer from Highways of course spoke about funding; I have raised the question We provide Bed & that there seemed to be funding to repair the road (am I cynical in being suspicious that Breakfast in a completely this might have something to do with the bicycle race?). I’m also told that there have self contained part of our been no accidents, which lowers the priority of something being done, so if anyone lovely detached house at would like to volunteer to become a casualty by being run over, this would improve our chances of funding!!! Calvert Trust has achieved the AHOEC Gold Standard for the quality of its outdoor education, and continues to be the only centre in the South West to carry this endorsement. The AHOEC (Association of Heads of Outdoor Education Centres) exists to champion high safety and quality standards in the provision of out- door learning, and does not award its Gold Standard assurance lightly, with just 49 centres across the UK currently brandishing the accolade. The Gold Standard is the AHOEC’s quality scheme, which recognises ex- ceptional performance in the provision of outdoor education delivery and learning outcomes whilst also taking in to account other operational aspects, including the quality and safety of facilities, staff and customer care. Focussing on nine areas altogether, the standard provides a frame- work against which the top activity providers are thoroughly assessed. On receiving the news, Sophie, Activities Manager at Calvert Trust Ex- moor said: “I am delighted to have retained the Gold Standard award, as we continue to strive to provide the best experience possible for our guests.” ANSWERS TO CROSSWORD Residential breaks are built around a struc- ACROSS tured programme of activities led by quali- 1. News from the Exmoor Pony Centre, Ashwick, Dulverton TA22 9QE We have welcomed two new people to our team this month. Kirsty is our new office manager having replaced Claire who, sadly, had to leave us for personal reasons. Kestra has re-joined us and is now busy setting up local fundraising groups to help with activities at the Pony Centre and with a bit of luck we will soon be able to make much-needed access improvements to our interactive pony area. Thanks to volunteers, we have now completed the fencing for the field shelter paddock where Roger and Kate, our two elderly ponies, live. The Exmoor Fascias Ltd, trading since 1988
